Good to start up a 250 group for regulars. Been doing the solo missions for a while and have noticed about 2-3 others with the same stallion as me (green that is), be nice to meet em.

davebullet suggested a ride through Ohariu Valley, Makara, Karori.
http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=91204&page=3
It is a short one but I am sure we could tag a bit on the end or beginning to make it longer if needed.

davebullet
2nd March 2009, 06:42
Worthy of a new thread?
Any coffee stops / refreshments in Makara? (haven't been there myself for ages)

There is a cafe at Makara beach. Not sure if Makara settlement has a coffee shop.

I don't know what hours the beach cafe is open, but makes for a nice scenic stop next to the water. On a clear day, you can almost see Aussie

I'll plot out a possible course and post here. I'll include a south coast segment to make the ride a little longer.

davebullet
2nd March 2009, 06:52
Here's a possible ride. It would take roughly 2 hours plus stops. I estimate it would be about 70-90kms. Of course, people could peel off at any time if they have other commitments.

The beauty about this ride; it is on slow roads (50kph limits) and lots of corners and twisty bits. Definitely for cruising or easy riding. Considering I'm on a new bike and still getting used to it, I'm not ready to push things so suits me fine.... The start point would be Johnsonville shopping centre (see green flag). The end point is cable street somewhere... or maybe that icecream shop down oriental parade opposite the fishermans table restaurant.

If one of the aims for these rides is to build up confidence, then this ride combines some city / traffic work, hill work and dealing with most of the distractions / hazards you'll be faced with. I would not recommend this ride to those who have just started riding, but anyone with 500kms+ or 3+months on the road will be fine.

That ones quite good, Ive done it about 15 or so times.
And the end point is where I live so even better!

We had a ride around the bays on Friday evening, stopped in at the bach cafe for a coffee, great views and plenty of room.

Always seem to be plenty of motorcycles parked outside the Bach cafe.
Must be a good sign of either good service or good food or both.

That's a deal then. The Bach afe sounds like a good spot to stop.

I've got the kids this weekend, but don't let that stop you guys from organising something... I might be able to get out for a few hours to do the ride.

Shall we do 10am Sunday - or will that interfere with your usual confessionals or church services?

NZJONESY

I'm free then.

Whats a church service? Is this some kind of secret performance enhancement?

What's the final rendez vous point?
Johnsonville shopping centre, sunday 8th march, 10am?

davebullet
3rd March 2009, 09:21
Ok - here is our meeting point to start the ride. Note: the view is pointing south and the green arrow marks broderick road in the distance (and on the mini map). The location is the row of angled parking just opposite the train station in johnsonville next to the main road (moorefield). Better to park out here (which will be empty) than in the mall itself as it can get a little crazy in there on the weekend.

We'll head north from here, onto ironside then to ohariu valley road, then onto makara beach. We'll pause and re group there, then carry onto through makara.

Not sure if we should have another regroup point. I think we should. There is a nice pull over / passing bay at the top of makara hill (before the descent into karori) that overlooks the verdent greenery (only spoilt by the power pylons). I'll bring copies of the map with me and we can mark out / agree meeting points on the day.

Let's plan to leave J'ville 10:30am sharp on Sunday 8th march.

How does that sound?

Weather might clear up on Sunday... here's saturday's assessment:

"Saturday

Rain over the North Island easing to a few showers, and clearing in the east from Wellington to Gisborne. Over the South Island, some rain continuing in the west, and clearing in the east, although showers come back to the south coast later."

I'll bring a still camera for all those regroup points (or other interesting vistas along the way).

I'll post back here again saturday night. IF you could all do the same so we get an idea of confirmed numbers. We should have a good enough idea about the weather by sat. night.

All are welcome, but the aim is for a slow cruisy ride, without need or pressure to prove yourself to others.

Although the title of the thread is 250s, it's only intended to scare away the 1000 cc bad boys

I personally reserve the right to be overtaken by others  I will be riding a 650, but in a 50cc manner.

No Worries. Was it you I was talking to a couple of months back over at Featherston about the GSX650? Well, since I also have a Suzuki 650 now, it's up to us to block those cagers as TEC's allowing the 250s up front to get away :shifty:

DingoZ
8th March 2009, 15:09
Now that was a lot of fun. :niceone:

Was at the start point a wee bit early. Thats alright though. 10:00 saw bikes starting to roll in. Some Scorpio's some Suzuki's, some Kawasaki's, a really good mix. 250's up to 650's....:)

The usual chat session, and then the brief from Dave, gear on and we are off. My bad forgot to turn left after the second roundabout, (not familiar with the area). All good though a quick reverse and it's off after the grp.

Now that road out to Makara Beach, should be renamed to Makara Track, not a road. But still fun anyways. (Lovin the new bike, flicks around the corners so easily)..

Couple of stops along the way, one at the top of the hill. Nice view. Off down the hill into town, heading for the coast. Bach Cafe, lovely spot, good food, will definetly be going back there for a feed some other time.

Back onto the bikes, and around towards Oriental Pde, now for me I'm not a fan of this road during busy traffic times. Cause murphy's law dictates you wll get lil ole gran in her cage in front of you, who will speed up along the short straight bits, and go real slow and brake like mad for the corners. But anyways, nice weather, nice scenery along the way, not to complain. :)

Dealt to the traffic to get out of town. Boy howdy I am liking this new bike more and more by the second. Everything is just so effortless.
(Must be careful with the throttle, do not want any speeding tickets)....

Home by 2:30, waiting for the other half to come back from being out for the morning, and will go for a 2 up ride.....

Cheers all to the people I met for the first time this morning. Shocking with names until I have met you a couple of times. Looking forward to the next one...:)

Some piccies below. Photgrapher has a fixation for one bike in particular, will have to have words with him me thinks..... :Pokey:

Nice easy ride today. Had a couple with us and it was their first time riding in a group, so was good to go slowly.

I think we had 12+ bikes in all... so not a bad turn out. We turned a few heads. Two of the Ninjas each had a yoshi exhaust which added to the "here we come".

3 stops on a short (90km) ride around the bays. Good company, some coffee, great weather and a motorbike.... doesn't get much better than that!

I was surprised with the quality of the road from Johnsonville to Makara. It wasn't as tight and windy as I remembered. Mind you, last time I went through there in a car, this road was still unsealed. That was quite a few haircuts ago though.
I would have been quite happy if that road had gone on for many more kays.
And I really enjoyed the little stint up the Makara Hill. The guys immediately in front of me had taken off, I went a little faster than we had been going as well and the corners just flowed from left to right and back again. Bloody awesome.
And thanks go out to Davebullet for suggesting this ride and then being so organised about it. Pictures with arrows showing exactly where to meet, maps, and a comprehensive pre-ride briefing of the route, possible road conditions, re-group points etc. Very well done.

Great ride last Sunday by the way. A true "cruisy" ride.
We ended up heading over the tukas after our coffee at the batch. Met up with captain andrey and hawkeye at the top, so the four of us carried on to featherston for a cold one and back home about 5 oclock, a perfect way to spend a Sunday.

Same here. And although it is fine at the moment, Southerlies and showers are forecast to roll in later this afternoon.
However the weather forecasters have been known to get things wrong from time to time.
Should things improve tomorrow I am keen on a little blat. Was thinking something along the lines of a trip to Castlepoint or a round trip along some of the back roads in the Wairarapa. Mapped out a possible route which went around the lake, past Stonehenge, go for a little looksie to see what road looks like on which they held the Cliffhanger last weekend, head to Masterton for a refuel (bike and body) and trundle back home.

If you want a really good ride. I would suggest this one, that I did a while back. Over the Takas out to Masterton via the main rd, (yes I know but bear with me). Turn Right outta Masterton and head to Castlepoint. Is an excellent bit of road, with some nice corners on it. Be mindful of the two really sharp bends in the small gorge bt (often have loose p gravel on the cornering lines). Take in the magnificent views at Castlepoint, and then head back in. Turn left before getting into Masterton, and head to Martinborough via the back roads, and then back over the Taka's. Is a longish kinda ride, but is awesome, and well worth it.

Knowing Wellington, you're probably right.

Had a bit of blat today, not bad, stayed mostly away from exposed/coastal areas.

What are some other good roads in Wellington to ride if I'm feeling lazy?

My usual blats are the Bays and Makara, though today a climb up Wadestown hill was extremely fun.

I am not one to shy away from a wet and windy day, on my Scorpio anyway. Ride that to work every day, no matter how foul the weather is.
But this weekend I was hoping to take the new and slighty bigger bike for a good blat to clock up some kays on it. After riding it in the rain on last Wednesday night's ride I realised how little grip "almost slicks" offer in the wet. So it stayed in the garage this weekend.

Next weekend is out for me, the following weekend is a possiblity. Then I am away on holiday for three weeks. So a little gutted this weekend was wet.

Some other good local roads? Paekakariki Hill Road, round the Pautahanui Inlet, Rimutaka Hill of course, Wainuiomata Coast Road, Blue Mountains Road into Whitemans Valley. No doubt there are some more.

I can't believe how much traffic you struck, that was unusually busy.
Still not bad. From where you started the video to the end is about 19km. That took a little over 10 minutes. So around 114km/hr average speed. Pretty quick considering the amount of cars on the road.
That corner at the 10min. mark is where my new bike gave me a bit of a fright. Just rounded that 25km/hr left hander and getting into the next flowing left hander, 4th gear with the power on and ran across some flattened sheep poo. Slippery shit that. Just about some in my undies too.

pak & save 10.25 no one, figured ok they're keen and gone already, so raced up to caltex to see if i could catch up (at the speed limit of course:innocent:), got there to find andrey on his own, waited there with him until 11.15 then followed him to the sumit where seeing as I was heading over to otaki, I left him to work his way through the traffic while I shot back down and over the akatarawas, did you end up having lunch on your own out there andrey?

Roki_nz

Hi Laxi

Sorry we didn’t meant up with you but…

Fabian and I were late getting to pak and save. We headed off to join up at the caltex but only got to about Belmount when the car in front of Fabian hit its breaks hard so does Fabian.

I see this and hit mine but at the time I am on tar seal and my wheels lock and I skid. I manage to bleed off most of the speed but then the bike comes out from under me and I hit the road.

I got back up on my feet and I get the bike off the road quickly. Quick look at the bike reveals I have lost my foot peg and indicator. The front fairing is scraped up and loose.

I quickly check my self and find nothing is wrong except a sore ankle. A nice local offers to put the bike in his shed until the tow company can come and pick it up.

I go to hospital to spend 3 and a half hours waiting to be told my foot is fine.

Not sure if the bike is a write off yet its going to be taken to Motorad on Tuesday.

Ha ha wasn't hutt A&E it was Welly was nice and quiet too and all the doctor did was "Does it hurt here, what about here etc" then sent me out only took two min once they saw me. Nearly died of boredom

Anyways next week i will find out when i am back on the road

yeah, wont go to wellington at all! about 10 years ago had a drunk hit us, my wifes head riped the rearview mirror clean off, she was delivered by ambulance, waited 4 hours to see a doctor, she felt tired and they said "let her sleep" besides never checking for concussion, docter looked her over said "she's fine, just bruised" when she was in pain for 2 weeks after we to the hutt, they x-rayed her & found 3 cracked ribs, broken wrist and worst of all a fractured vertibrae in her neck, lost all confidance in A&E after that

Hey Fabian

Not sure when my bike will get to motorad its been dropped off by the tow company and state will be sorting it with motorad. I will give them a call in the morning to give them a heads up in case state hasn't. Hmm would be a prick if its written off as i would have to get a new bike and I only have the bike covered for $7000 and after the excess i would get about $6000 to spend on a bike. But on the other hand if it is written off i would be able to get back on the road soonish depending on how quickly state pays out.

Ha ha I think my partner will still let me out the door to ride... first thing i did when i got home from the hospital was to get on trade me and start scoping out replacements :)

Yeap I will have to wait for a bigger bike for ABS. Hmm wasn't the following distance that screwed me I had enough room to stop. It was the slippery surface and the fact I screwed up by applying far too much of the breaks far to quickly, and again by failing to unlock both breaks (although at the time I thought I had let go of both).

I did my first Rimutaka pass yesterday too. What fun! But man, my cornering sucks pretty bad. I was pleased with how well I kept up with a guy on a cruiser on the way back down though!

RocKai
13th April 2009, 11:09
Hmm wasn't the following distance ...

Not much you can do there really if you lock it up, especially if its not your fault. I had this stupid lady turning into my path when I was going straight once. Bitch looked right thru me. I managed to jolt my brake really hard then release it straight away, lift my rear a little bit but didn't lock up. How lucky.

But in that situation because it's a slippery piece of road, the ABS will certainly help you from locking up and staying up but it won't help you much if the car in front of you stopped dead thus ploughing yourself into its behind and superman over it causing more carnage than just a slide.

Because once the ABS kicked in on that piece of slippery road, it will release the front brake from locking up and you'll travel a further distance to stop than on a normal lock-up. It is a common mishap on dirt (off) road riding/driving on ABS system. I wonder if having ABS will help you in this situation at all. Just unlucky mate.

Oh, I musta missed ya. Too many bikes on the road and loving the hill too much to look for ya. I had trouble keeping up with my mate on his awesome Scorpio eh Haydz? But I've learned my lesson. You need to start slow then build up your speed, unlikely you'll start to corner like Bautista or Rossi on the new bike eh? ;)

Oh no, mate. I wouldn't have even noticed you. I was too busy thinking, "Yay! Whee! Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit! Whee! Whoohoo!" I think my entry speed of 10kph and exit of 20kph on some of those curves was just fast enough, thank you very much! :shit:

Hahaha that's EXACTLY what I was thinking. Towards Featherston, there was a Left Bend that goes pretty low, absolutely love it. And over to the other side, another slow one that goes pretty low too. Cross my line once about 5cm and sweat hard...phew.
