With regards to ATGATT:

I need, for my own benefit, to add ADU to that little acronym...meaning "and done up".
For the god knows how manyth time, I get out on the bike to feel and hear a clang clang clang bizo going on round the side of the helmet. Once again I had forgotten to do up the straps...geez, you'd think forty years of riding would have that sorted wood'n ya? bloody senile old fools oughta be locked up afore they kill someone...

I used to do the same all the time. I would get distracted in the middle of putting my helmet on.

Until.. I got a helmet with one of those ratchet clip thingys on it. Never ever again have I forgot to do the clip up. Damn good.

So I hopped on Bobbie and blatted around for a bit while I had my gear on :clap:

Nothing beats the joy of realising after all that zipping, fastening of velcro, and tucking away that my helmet strap is undone...and no amount of digit dexterity is going to get the strap through D rings.

Especially on a hot day.

And everyone else is motor running ready to go.

My HJC has like a seat-belt latch arrangement, bloody brilliant.


I've still forgotten to do it up a couple of time - always gives me a fright when I get to where I'm going, reach up to undo the helmet and............whups, not done up!

As does mine, but the Double-D rings are safer come crash time, much less likely to come undone.

I like the D rings because they can be tensioned up as you fasten them...

I like the D rings because they can be tensioned up as you fasten them...I found that to be a bother, because it was always in a different place. With the ratchet, I adjust it first so with the ratchet fully home, it is set perfectly. Now I just shove helmet on, shove ratchet thingy in, voila! perfect adjustment every time. And its fast on and fast off, even with gloves on.

If I'm wearing a thick balaclava, I just ratchet it on partway until its snug. The excess strap is rolled into a ball and cable-tied tightly, or trimmed back.

I expect it will rip my chin off before I break the ratchet mechanism in a crash. Never tried it.

The answer is "Nup". I always remember to fasten my helmet.
As for what type of strap - for years I had AGVs with clip type fasteners. Before that, of course, there were only double D-ring straps. Now I've gone back to them. At first I found it a nuisance, but you get used to it fast. The only thing I don't like is the padded bit on the strap of my Shoei is shorter than that on the last AGV (which, being a race helmet, had double D-rings). It took a few weeks for the strap to get softer and less scratchy, and for me to get the hang of the clip thingie for the end of the strap (AGV had a velcro tab).
The only thing that worries me is the constant doing up / undoing of the strap may wear it out before the rest of the helmet is tired enough to throw away. :confused:

But no doubt I'll crash and wreck it before it wears out from old age. :eek5:
