The old mans just had his right leg shortened just above the knee and seems keen on attachng a sidecar to his R80. He doesn't want to convert it to a trike God bless his wee cotten sock. Anyone know any local agents?

I've seen the odd one on tardme, including the Chang Jiang which is kind of BMW military thing WW2 era. Looked cool as.
If you ring Street n Sport motorbikes in christchurch, ask about the Triumph Scrambler with sidecar they've got for sale there. The whole deal is $14k asking (about the cost of the bike...). I thought it was cool as.
I know thats not what you asked but you could sell the R80 (what does he want for it?) and get a Scrambler. its matt black. like mine.

Was it setup with a standard front end or Earls style? The R80s not negotible at this stage, the siblings will have first dibs on that anyway ;)Long and short it wont leave the family and you have to get it past mum.

The official BMW line is the R80 is not suitable for sidecar use - but what the hell do they know? Is it twin or mono shock? I think the mono would be a stronger frame for sidecar use,but they have a shit load of trail which would need reduction....leading link forks is the way to go there. It will need a lower subframe to spread the load, and also need the top links load transfered across the frame to the right hand tubes too.Been done plenty of times, there should be some knowledgeable people out there.

I bump into a dude (Gavin) at last years Cold Duck who coverted an R65,now R80 due to a cylinder being clipped off the R65 donk by a 4be4. My old Haynes Cb500/4 manual shows few angles the bike and sidechair could be set at, funny old thing.

I have a r75/5 with a Watsonian GP ( currently seperated)....
As Motu said BMW said the R series was not suitable for a sidecar due to the weak frame and bolt up rear end.
Well I didn't know this and had the GP fitted when I lived in London, a four point set up. Took it to the elefantreffen once and up to the Artic Circle in Norway.
I had a Chaing Jaing a couple of years ago...cool looking but a heavy slower pos you would be hard pressed to find.
The BMW 750 with a 500 cc final drive will haul a Watsonian/Squire sidecar no probs fully loaded....can even see off a Trabant in an autobahn drag...
Forget steel sidecars...too heavy.
The pictures were taken at the '93 Brass Monkey...before my mate lost it on the Rarimu Spiral.....and bent the frame.
Great fun sidecars..especially in the snow.

Hard....er no...just like a bit of motorcycle adventure...well...used to....
It was a hard ride home...snowing up the east coast, and freezing up the centre of the North Island......but nothing compared to being tow started in Karl Marx Stadt in Feb at -10 degrees and snow all the way to London.
Now that was a good trip....put the missus off rallys forever.
I got frost nip.....means I get sore hands in the cold now.
sidecar is soooooo not for sale.
Plans to mate it to a R90/5 toaster

Are you giving up yours? Did you mount it or did you only ride the bike on its own?

Nice sidecars. What i'm wondering though is why stick a pod on the side. Has you Dad thought about just a tray and wheel like the classic racers.
That would give him a stable sidecar and it would make an interesting talking point. Then on track days he can put it around the track as long as he can find a swinger. Swinging in a race has to be on the things I do before I die list.
I wonder if it can be entered in sidecar races?
Now of course a switchable side car rig that can be swapped pod for tray would be interesting. I just have visions of him riding around the country with a big number on the front of the bike (sidecar) and a tray on the side. Everybody would know the side car.
Having a swinger on the road would be an interesting sight.

Nope I put it on for a while. It was fun riding around town, and I had ideas of charging kids for rides in it on market day. But I've taken it off again because I wanted to go for some bike rides.
I loved riding in the sidecar, but didn't really enjoy riding the bike with the sidecar attached.
Was depressed yesterday because my bike broke down, and Bonez knows the sidecar, so thought I'd mention it.

There is also the Eagle-One solution. Not my cup of tea, but worth mentioning here.
