Well what do you do? Two excellent rallys on the same weekend!! I used to do both as they were on different weekends...that is until last year:Oops::crazy:
2008 I ended up going to the Sundown Rally at Greta Valley, so I guess it's turn about this year and it will be Off the Rails at Middlemarch:yes:
They are both good, both quite sort of different, either one is a great choice!!

How can Middlemarch be to close to home FFS go for a ride man... go exploring roads you haven't done in a while... I can have a rally on my own backyard (if I had one) and still have a days ride to get there... to close to home my arse... every where in NZ is to close to home... I get sick of hearing that...
Go north on the back roads (and there are some nice ones in those rolling hills out the back in your area there as Oldrider showed me last year) head to Omarama... do the Lindus, Cromwell, Alexandra, Ranfurly, then either turn off at Kyeburn or Macraes Flat to Middlemarch.

About time I got my arse to another rally and I haven't been to this one so I will book it in. Hope it isn't windy - I used to work up there and when it blows it can blow its nuts out. At least theres been enough rain to be able to get a few tent pegs in the ground (between the rocks!!)

Oh you little ray of sunshine - I thought you two were riding our bikes to the wedding?? - if so you'd better change your weather wishes eh:angry:
I was told today that the "Moon Man" (a guy who does long range weather forecasts which include moon cycles etc - he seems to have a following in the Ag community as his record is reasonably good) is predicting a long wet cold winter. SO get out and enjoy all the good stuff before then

Hey - lets no go doing the weather forecast this far out eh !!! - it could be a beautiful fine weekend.
Working out what route to get there is the question - back roads or seal - a trip from here, over past Lake Onslow and then over the Dunstan trail past the Loganburn would be great on a nice day - but - a little unsociable if theres no other adventure riders

The sight on the Sunday morning of the MHR wasn't a pleasant sight, good old SD mooning us all with his warehouse undies. Can wee all put a couple of dollars in and get him some Bendon man undies? At least we shouldn't be able to see his "moon" during daylight hours from when he walks out of his tent first thing in the morning.

I'm sorta leaning towards Sundown at this stage, if only because I'll get a decent ride out of it as opposed to making the effort to find a long way from Dunedin to Middlemarch....
Wet weather and $$$ in the bank - or lack thereof - are the only things that would spoil that ride...
If I do do Sundown plaining to take Friday off work to head up and Monday as well so I can just cruise back - possibly via Tekapo for the Sunday night and then back to Dunners the next day.
These rallies are damn hard on the wallet!!

I have been shaking since I got back..........concerntrating and trying to stay awake I guess.............

Not many posts about travel plans??
We are planning on leaving here after an early lunch (away by 1), fuel up at Shell Milton then head on up via the Maungatua backroad behind the airport, probably missing Outram and heading up the hill.
Prob stop for a coffee at the Kissing Gate at Middlemarch, then depending on time etc we might do a jaunt up to Hyde, over and back over the Hyde Hill (just because it is there - and because I rate it as the best bit of motorcycle road in Otago), coffee at Hyde on the way back then on to the rally site.
Any particular place designated as KB HQ??
I will have my son following behind on his first decent road ride, and first rally, so won't be pushing things too hard if anyone wants to join us for a gentle ride. Princess Fiona has generously lent him her bike and will be keeping an eye on it from the co-pilot chair!!
Of course thats the best laid plans - we all know what sometimes happens!!
See you all tomorrow - but if anyone reads this in the morning and their plans roughly coincide ,let me know and we'll keep a look out for you.
Cheers

Just returned home from Off the Rails rally. Had a great time. A number of Kiwi Bikers were there enjoying the good company, music & scenery. No wet teeshirt this year but 3 young enthusiastic strippers instead. They had a appreciative good natured audience. Strong winds during the night meant several tents were trashed & quite a few more flattened. Didn't spoil what was a excellent rally. I heard 450 attended, up on last year. Well worth going again in 2010. Sorry no pics but someone else will put that right. Cheers.

It was a great day nice a sunny and got warmer as the day went on, I was staggered and my breath was taken by the seasonal changes on the Trees, the Scenery again mesmorises me on these trips to rallies. Picked up a couple of dudes at Cromwell, The lovely Guy being one of them.
We weaved our way through the painted scenery to Omakau for a pint and breather.....Boy it was warm, but bloody windy................and hooned our way to the rally site in Middlemarch.
The craggy site is wicked and the venue the pongy sheep shearing shed it fab for a pgood piss up and party.
We got there about 5pm and it the site was packed already........Had a drive around, and met up with Hayden and Chrissie, Nicky and Glenn and camped next to them.......and so commenced the beer drinking calculated I drank about 20 cans of speights, although I didn't feel like I had.
I reckon the strippers sucked actually and not just because I am a chick, but its not an r18 rally and there were a few kids around........I'm not a fan of kids at rallies, but with strippers around.....hmmmmm:scratch:
Their music was shit and didn't think much of their routine, spoke to loads of dudes who weren't impressed with them either.....This rally is so fantastic I personally don't think they need to lower themselves to a strip show, but its their call and didn't take away the fun of the night.
Danced and jumped around stacks and had a ball with Mr.Sensible and Q, met up with Irish Jeff, who I'd previously met at Middlemarch. I spent a large amount of the evening mucking around and drinking and had a dirt sliding competition with Q and Mr S,which was funny. We ran hard out to a rock down the hill a bit, then side slit until we stopped, which when ur carrying a belly food of booze is hysterical as well as knackering. Have now got a hole in my boot, darn in!!:shit:
More drinking singing and fooling around inside the shed and out ensued, till then back finished, and an idle kick of a beer can errupted into a football match with shitloads joining in, it was all out fun, lively and must have looked very daft,:eek5:
I found I had a bruise the size of an egg on my forearm, but fell over quite a big got rugby tackled so much that I don't recall where this occured!!:thud::drinkup:
All in all a wickedly fun night, seemed to recall clambering over Mr. S and Q a bit at some point!?!
Then hurricane winds gathered up dust and carried on blasting the tents around till about 7am in the morning. I slept through it though in a dreamy boozed up state.
Again was nearly the last to leave and Nicky and Tim were milling around.
We all set off together but went out seperate ways pretty quickly. Jeff and I rode together and encountered Paula and Dale in Ranfurly so stopped for a cuppa with them.....that was a random meeting if ever there was one!!
Jeff and I rode through to Alex where he went on his merry way. We said goodbye and marvelled at the Autumnal colours emerging in the ever contrasting lasnscape. Hyde was amazing for yellow leaved skyscaper trees.
The weather was fantastic, but as normal had a shit ride back as felt like poo.
To the Rally organisers, I love the site and your organising of this event and getting 450 in attendance pays homage to your hard work. Said my piece on the Strippers, other than that it was a fantastic rally, thank you Dudes and Dudess's, Off the Rails truly rocks:Punk:
Had a ball and I feel saddened that Rally Season is nearly over.
Roll on the Beaumont Rally, gonna do a thread on the politics of the Beaumont.....
Cheers all,
Ciao 4 now

Now that was great.
Very windy getting there, & had the Trumpy workin hard.
The same old band "Bender" really had their shit together this time & put on a good show, had the crowd rockin! :woohoo:
The historic woolshed is a great all weather venue. The food on offer from the Middlemarch Lions Club looked awesome, Burgers soooo big ya couldn't close the box lid!
The weather this morning looked a bit dodgy, but I perservered on to Alexandra where I ended up sitting around at my folks until 3pm in 25 degrees of brilliant sunshine. :sunny:
The trip home being eventful when running out of gas on the Clarksville straights just south of Milton.
I couldn't get fuel @ Lawrence & I debated about pulling in to Ruralmans for a small top up. Hitched to Milton and back, meeting some very nice helpful people.
Lets do it again next year!

I have used the truck stop for petrol before just across the road from the gas station in Lawrence (I guess it is still there)

It was a good fun night and yeah the sliding competition was a laugh. Sorry for beating you guys on the slide that counted!

That you did and not forgetting Jeff as well towards the end of the night. All in good fun.

It was bloody hard work!! Hell of a laugh but I'm sure it looked pretty juvenile; who cares it was a great way to finish the night.
Had a great ride down the middle with GB and Shrek with a very lucky stop at the Mt Cook look out at Lake Pukaki. The was a cop sitting in the dip in road just after it and would've got me for at least 20 over, oops.
The road either side of Hyde is fantastic! Don't think I've ever ridden it before, brilliant.
The rally was great and as always was meeting the crew again. Always good.
A very enjoyable weekend. :banana::banana:

Good shit... still at the end of Monday, the weekends activities still view well in my mind. nothing dodgy, and no regretable moments... so that has to be a good thing... either that or have to try harder next time, though rallies that have gone by with numerous blank moments of memory loss are way to much of a worry.
I took a number of snaps... a few good ones reflect the fun of the day and night.
I did take some video of the strippers but was quickly advised that this was not allowed;) not exactly that exciting anyways... unlike that pole dancer at some rally previous.
Cheers cheers and cheers
Considering the Beumount now, as initially thought it was in two weeks time, which would not have worked.

That fuel pump nearly had it's arse kicked.
I've since found out that you can ask at the corner dairy and get someone to open the pumps for you. Rumour or truth, Ruralman???

It was a really enjoyable rally. I agree with the sentiments about the strippers though - cost them $750 apparently - what a waste of money, it was boring, a bit passe' these days, and quite frankly I wish the band had kept playing instead. Shame the money wasn't spent on something better or donated to a worthwhile cause.
This was the first ride and first rally for my 17yr old son - he followed us up there on the special edition "250" ER6n generously loaned to him by PF. A bit of a coming of age for my lad and I am very pleased I was able to do this with him.
Interesting though that when we filled the bikes up back in Milton the ER6 had used about 1.5l more fuel than a well laden Tiger (2 up with most of the gear) - hmmm, that can't be right. A new air filter is on its way for the ER!!
The other picture is of some Gevuina nuts hanging on one of the trees that we picked today - some of the KB crew over in our corner had a taste of these (roasted ones) and of course no one had ever heard of them - so here's what they look like.
Good to meet up with lots of KB faces and a few new ones - where did Mr Orange Kwaka get to tho??

NICE NUTS, they were different, and nice!:niceone:

Hhmmmm:apint: Well I was around still when the "can" footy was going on, so had a play at that!! Good Fun!! It was getting to around 2am I think at that stage, so pretty sure I went to bed!! But I often tend to go AWOL....wandering around the place to see what is happening so.............any other thoughts anyone??
Would have been nice to get some sleep but with the wind gusting & howling & the tent flapping, I think I just stayed awake most of the night!! Felt real good the next day tho (not too much to drink!!) and had a fantastic ride back with the Timaru Ulysses guys.
Maybe the ER6 was a bit thirsty was because your son was trying hard to keep up with you! But yeah a freer style Air-filter could help, nice to open up the exhaust a bit too!!
