View Full Version : Oil changes-2smokers?

So how often do you change your oil in your 2smoker.
Every ad on T/me says after "every ride" yeh right!
I do mine after i think I haven't done it for a few rides.
Just went to do it and checked my spreadsheet said I'd done 12.5 hours and 6 rides. This would be usual or a a bit longer than normal as I did a bit of riding over Xmas, then got lazy.
So looking back on average I've been changing oil every 4 or so rides, probably 6-10 bike hours. And I thought I was stretching it.
Well I had a look in the ktm manual the 03 says after 4000K or once a year and the 08 says unless you race every 40 hours.
Shit If that's true, I've poured gallons of oil to much into my bikes!
So how often do you do you change it. Danger, Dammad or Ktm boy??
What say you??

Every 10 hours, but thats prob 2-3 months riding for me. Oil is cheap.

Yeah, you're right for I too have made my own oil well in the paddock.
I think I got in the habit when the young fella had a KTM50SX and they required changes sometimes twice a race meeting due to the auto clutch. therefore i've reduced the frequency a tad.
I will be doing mine this sunday and thats been a good six/eight weeks (12-16hrs).Last time I changed the oil it was in good nick with no aluminium filings at all.
But that was just trail ridng and I'd change oil more often if I was racing every weekend, if not every week.
Air filters, thats another story.

I do mine about every four rides, so about 8-12hrs but if i've been on a real muddy ride where the clutch gets abused i change it straight after, oils cheap enough so it's better to over do it rather than under do it.

Yes the main contaminator is the Aluminium clutch plates. I've heard on the early Ktm 200's you can use the Cr125 Steel clutch plates improving this situation and also adds a bit of weight making it spin up a fraction slower (fly wheel weight style). I don't know if this applies to the 08 but I haven't heard they'd changed the clutch basket. So I might investigate this when it needs replacing!!
I got into the habit of changing oil more often when I had the Cr250 as MX theory says change it every meeting or race??
But 20 hours for modern oil if you don't Cain the shit out of it, doesn't seem to unbelievable. And the Ktm 200 & 300 grunt so well from down low you don't have to clutch it very much at all.
At 12.5 hours I think I'll do the Sandpit tomorrow (if its not pissing down)and change it after that, say 15 hours! Shit used to be 1/2 that. Now I can afford my new springs sooner!! Ye ha!
Thanks for the feedback guys!
PS I'll ride it and post how it looks after I've changed it!

I change mine every 5-6 rides. Its usually quite clean. No combustion happens in that part of the motor and the clutch is the only material that can contaminate it. However as the boys said previously that oil is cheap,(much cheaper than steel anyway)and the very small volume the crankcase takes -Id say its better to do it more often than not. The gears, bearings and seals will last longer if the oil they work in is clean, same goes for your clutch.
PS- the oil that I remove from the crankcase I usually keep to lubricate other things around the place.

I've had my kdx for about 6mnths, dunno how many rides I've been on during that time, but I try and ride at least once every 2 weeks, most of the time once a week. Yet to change it :headbang:
I think you guys are over doing it. Then again the manual says change it every 1200miles or something. If the clutch starts playing up or shifting starts to feel a bit weird I'll change it.
Should probaby do it now, prevention better than cure etc etc.

I worked out oil to be about *2-5% of TCO (* Did this for four stroke so not including premix oil). Not a big $ amount but just seems like a huge waste of the precious and lovely stuff.
Taking the used oil in for 'recycling' is apparently a sham. Don't quote me but AFAIK no oil in this clean green country has been recycled since govt clean air regs put Dominion refining out of biz years ago. Local garage told me my used oil now goes down to Sth Island and gets burnt as fuel for big cement works lime kiln.
Those long oil service intervals in the KTM handbook are hard case. Still, 2 stroke gearbox oil never has to go upstairs to lube cams and bearings, and (ditto blacksmith) oil not being contaminated from combustion process either(?).
Those ali clutch plates do bugger up the oil pretty quick alright, and I find the fuzz on the end of the drain plug magnet especially hard to live with. Where's that shit coming from? I reckon there might a couple of overly soft thrust washers or something similar in there somewhere.
10-12 hr intervals for me, sooner if harder riding. But looking at some used oil I have in clear containers has me thinking about a home made filter press. The crap settles to bottom after a few months and oil looks so much cleaner. Haven't been that tempted to try re-using as I'm cautious, but would be interesting to lab test and see if it's as good as it looks. Everything I've read on subject seems to indicate oil molecule never wears out, oil just gets dirty, and additive package gets screwed up.

i allways do mine every second ride 3rd at a push but then i dontpay for it. When i did have to pay for it i allways didit every 4-5 rides small amount of oil is allways going to be cheaper than a g/box. Whether its a 4s or a 2smoke.

Are you talkin about the YZ? that seems delayed? I've put $40 worth of oil in my sxf after every ride for the last year and an $11 filter every 2nd ride. Only my mates convincing me that i was throwing money away has changed me to oil and filter every 2nd ride (for the last 2 months) what oil ya using? golden spectro 10-40?

The manual says every third fill up, whatever that equates to in actual hours I don't know because I never fill the tank all the way up, Its like 10 litres +, a big clear after market one that too close to the pipe :Pokey:
But Iv owned it since may last year and Iv done it once when it went for a service at Counties Honda and they didn't make any remark about the oil quality coming out, so can only assume it was ok
But in saying that I don't ride the clutch as much as I apparently should with a 125? I didn't notice any difference between the new oil and before
Also the book says to inspect the piston and rings every 3 fill ups as well, and replace if necessary, Tui anyone?

I've been doing it every 2 rides about 4hrs so good to know I can leave it in longer. Especially after moving to 2x more expensive gear oil over cheap engine oil which I thought was sweet for it. Interesting reading: http://www.floridatrailriders.org/articles/techinf3.htm

unless your oilis real bad not many workshop will make comment about it just remember anything thats in theoil from clutch wear etc etc is also going through all your bearings just check your filter next time you change it your likely to see fine metal partical etc etc it all causes wear. So my way of thinking is the less time it spends in there the better. Yamaha have washable oil filter which i use 2-3 time then trow so i do oi and filter every time i change it.

On my Rmz i change filter and oil every 2nd ride and clean out the oil strainer, don't see the point of running a dirty filter with clean oil, (unless like barty you have washable).
And on my Cr125 i would change gear box oil every 3-4 rides like most other people on here.

theres nothing in the manual about oil filters, only air
Is this strange for a 125?

i change my oil filter every 10-15 hrs,and oils every 2-5 hrs,in saying that though it all depends on where and how your riding it, i check mine before changing it and if its still pretty clean i;ll stick with it for another hour or two.
