Well I got fed up with the GL145 the other week and decided its time for a change. Found an 88 gsxr250 in the t&e out in Upper Hutt, so drove out and had a look. As soon as I jumped on it I fell in love with it. So down to the bank to organise a loan (because students dont have real money), and $2000 later the bike is mine. Had it for a week now. Its done high k's (72xxx), but has been regularly serviced at Welly Motorcycles by previous owner (who had it since 26,000 k's. Runs bloody well, and the body is in very good nick overall (just needs a bit of a clean). Of course now that ive had it for a week some niggles are starting to rear their heads... mainly it doesnt seem to want to idle without the choke (even when warm), and the power drops off completely once I hit 15,000rpm (could just be because of high k's?). Overall i'm stoked as with it and look forward to some good times on it :D

Just plonk it on top of a scanner at Uni and scan the whole thing

These bikes have a tendency to recess their inlet valves which means you end up with no valve clearance. Could explain the reluctance to idle. If it gets worse, get the valve clearances checked - if they have no clearance be prepared for major disappointment.

Sweet, do you park by the student union building? I'm usually around that area between classes. I think I saw an 88ish gsxr250 there the other day. Just look for the rattiest most brokenass street magic in the world and I'll be close by!

Haha sweet. Usually I park behind the hunter building or in the cotton carpark. i'll hang around outside the student union between classes or something.

Hey man,
Ive got the same bike and Im having major problems with missfiring on mine..just posted a new thread on it lasy nite.
U say it loses power at 15+ .. Does it just lack power..or does it missfire?

Just lacks power. Bike shop reckons it just needs a tuneup, but a tuneup will cost me $350 + parts! So i think ill wait a while, im hardly a money tree...

Sweet, I think Ive almost figured out my gremlins :-)

Hey If ya ever keen for a ride I'm always keen. Be interesting to see how the two bikes go together.

Yeah i'd be keen, I need to do more riding and develop some skills - at the moment I dont really have the confidence to throw it around the twisties yet...

Thats cool...No point trying to push it and find yourself in trouble.
Let me know either way, doesnt have to be a sprint race :-)

So what was the gremlin?

My 250 used to bog sometimes if trying to give it the good stuff (like when overtaking etc) esp if under 10,000rpm
