View Full Version : Good rides around Auckland area?

Just got my hands on my new VFR 800 and have returned to AKLD after 2 years in Melbourne. I'm keen to know about any good day trips in and around Auckland. For example, today I went from Epsom --> Albany --> Riverhead --> Back to Epsom. A short one just to test ride my new wheels. Still got a big grin on my face

Anyone got any suggestions (perhaps there is already a list somewhere). If not, maybe we could start one.

West Auckland is a good place to start.

Scenic Drive is a worthy ride in its own right, plus it has a bunch of interesting diversions e.g.

Piha Road
Lone Kauri Drive
Little Huia
Bethells Beach

Nelson to Wanaka via Murchison ,Buller Gorge and the WEST COAST.

Kind of a real big trip for a day but put it in your plans for the future as a must do ride.

Around Auckland area? ;)

Anyway, I agree with those who said West Auckland. Piha, SH16, Bethells beach, Scenic Drive, Muriwai, etc.

Depends on what your area of Auckland is.
West, Scenic/Bethels/Piha.
North, Old North Rd up to Warkworth,
South, 22. Raglan,
East, Hunua ranges, Kaiaua/Coromandel...

Superb choice of bike! Get Blade1000 (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/member.php?u=12824) to gut out the pipes!!!:Punk:

Just gotta look at a map really eh?
Muriwai to Mangawhai is a good ride, on SH1 for about 300mts.

And some just go straight to the pub.

Old North Road, SH16 is good, watch out for the Ginga. SH22 is better IMHO and a nice jaunt down to Raglan. Coro is not over-rated for at least the first half a dozen loops.

Closer to home, the Eastern Bays, Clevedon, Kaiaua run is good, as with Piha, but I got bored with the West Coast real quick.

+1 - Scenic drive (and anything else in the Waitakeres) has almost every hazard you can imagine waiting just around the next bend.

But they're all lovely roads at a sedate pace.

Auck to Cape Reinga and back.
Up via SH16, Waipoua, Rawene ferry, Ahipara.
Down via Mangamuka, Kaikohe, Twin Bridges, Maungakaramea, Paparoa, Woodcocks, SH16.
It's about 1050 km according to my odo and so it's a pretty busy day, but over the sort of roads that the VFR will adore. It also includes about 40 km of gravel just to keep it interesting.
Of course, if you are a pussy like me or actually interested in looking at some of the remarkable territory that you are riding through, then you could make 2 days of it.

I always thought the best roads in Auckland were the roads out

Try SH22 for lunch at Raglan.
