View Full Version : Myths or truths?

Thought I'd open an old can of worms to see whether it's truth or dying myth. I seem to hear on quite a frequent basis that HOG riders only acknowledge other hog riders. I've been ridin for over twenty years and up until 8 months ago I only ever rode British or japa, yet Irode amongst a heap of hogs all having no problem riding with me. Now I ride my own HOG and I certainly acknowledge every other rider I encounter. In fact if the truth is to be Known I Quite often get ignored by sport bike riders. So is this a myth, or is it a projection to someone elses inadequacies?:mobile:

It's a generalisation. Harley riders come in many forms and guises.

Some are motorcyclists who just happen to ride Harleys.
Others have signed up to the whole Rugged Individualist(TM) Harley lifestyle.

Buying a Harley and joining HOG provides a whole international network of "friends" and riding buddies. HOG is well resourced and provides a veritable treasure trove of opportunities for those keen enough to take them up.

It's not just about the bike.

I get plenty of Harley riders waving now-days. Most are probably lawyers, builders, pimps etc. Also you'll find a lot of HD riders are generally well taught in sign language as their bikes are so friggen loud they tend to be deaf within a year of ownership.........

BMW riders never wave. They honestly believe that other bikes are beneath them and not worthy of a wave...........

GSXR riders tend to 'wave' by popping a wheelie at 160 plus.....
TL riders don't wave - only because if they are at speed they need both hands on the bars.......

Honda riders can easily be spotted by either the halo above their helmet or the pair of white wings poking out the back of their jacket. We like to wave at you mortals.......

Triumph riders wave a lot - Bonnie riders are so glad to be back into biking that they are very sociable chaps, and Speed/Street Triple riders wave rest assured in the knowledge that whatever you are riding, they look cooler!

Yamaha riders wave - fairly rare to see one on the road but they appear happy screaming along at 15,000 rpm.

Ducati/Aprilia riders. Often wave - many don't however and I am sure that this have nothing to do with being anti-social. Its more that they are secure in the knowledge that once they pass you you'll get a warm feeling just enjoying the boom of their open pipes.

I wave at anything on two wheels, cos I am too lazy to try to identify the oncoming bike, remember what I am riding, and figure out if I should wave or not.

Crusiers wave backat about the same proportion as other bikes. I presume a good proportion of the crusiers are Harleys, but I'm not up on crusiers enough to tell the difference between Harleys and metrics, they all look the same. I had a patched Hells Angel wave to me a week or so back. Does seem to help if you have lots of chrome.

I followed one such on the Toy Run yesterday...he waved by slipping the clutch and screaming the engine up to max revs...did it all the way from Cambridge to Hammertron...

I experience the same thing; many sports bike riders ignore my wave or nod but sometimes I might be too busy to wave or nod to another rider or simply forget/can't be arsed etc. I know HD riders are said (usually by sports bike riders) to be snobs but I've found it to be the reverse. I have also found that those who choose to wear German-style helmets and face-masks are usually unwilling to wave or nod. Too tough to be sociable I suppose. Their choice, I don't lose any sleep over it either way.:wavey:

Auckland riders often nod instead of waving, and it's sometimes almost imperceptible. I tend to be a nodder. Had one guy on the northwestern m\way stick his hand in the air and wave wildly, jeez he looked like he was in need of a few friends! My ratio of nods to being nodded or waved back to would be about 60\40. Hardly ever get replies from Harley guys but then again today two Jappers didn't either, who cares?

What about a wave (but get this - for here in-lies the twist) just for KB'ers - now thats a good idea.

This idea keeps getting mentioned but nothing ever comes of it.

Seems like a good idea until you think about it: What can you do with a wave to make it distinctive? A salute off your helmet, or pointing to the ground or straight up? There's not many alternatives and the only way its ever going to happen is for someone to have KB'ers vote by posting a poll but even then most KB'ers probably don't give a stuff about a special KB wave. For that matter, I have only seen one bike with a KB sticker; most KB'ers don't seem to give a crap about promoting KB away from the computer.

... I have also found that those who choose to wear German-style helmets and face-masks are usually unwilling to wave or nod. Too tough to be sociable I suppose. Their choice, I don't lose any sleep over it either way.:wavey:

Same here - the German helmet I-wanna-look-tough riders don't wave or nod. In January I spent over two weeks touring the N and S Islands, clocking up nearly 6,000 km and during that time I did a loose survey of who waves/nods. Most cruisers do not, especially Harleys, so now I don't bother with them unless they wave/nod first. Most but not all sport bikes nod/wave. The most enthusiastic wave was from a GN250 rider on the S Island - say what you want about GN's but some of those guys sure enjoy riding!

We've been thinking about this weighty subject as a club and have decided to take some steps to address the matter. Due to the many vagaries involved in waving, especially as to format, timing and level of enthusiasm, we have decided to have a designated 'waver" for each run.

This person will take on all of the waving duties and will be held responsible for portraying the ethos of the club by diligently waving in the appropriate manner (dependant, of course, on the wavee). At end end of each run the waver will give a full report of all waves initiated and/or responded to. This data will be collected into the club archives and one on every full moon we will collate waves for and against and decide on approprate next steps. In the event of a waving deficit with an identified individual, group or stereotype we will institute a retributive wave (to be decided) or in the unlikely event of a waving surplus with an identified individual, group or stereotype we will seek said individual, group or stereotype out and descend upon them en masse in a recognised "Club Wave Run".

Thus our waving obligations should be discharged fairly to all

Riding my VF700 Magna cruiser from Invers to Whangarei in March I waved at everyone (except scooters - just didn't feel right somehow...) Most waved back except for the Harley guys - they kind of seemed to treat me like I was on a scooter... :scooter:

Of course you get a few non-Harleyesques that won't wave and I give them excuses; recent relationship breakdown, bee in helmet, talking on their cellphone via bluetooth headset, wondering where they are, just going too fast to see me; whatever...

So unfortunately the Harley stereotype is actually true. Just like Skyline drivers don't indicate at roundabouts (you watch - it's uncanny)

obviously not the end of the world if someone doesnt wave back, but it is amusing that the highest proportion who dont wave back are riding cruisers, maybe its just cos im on a sportsbike (wee bit of a stretch there :P), or maybe the handling is just to finnicky to take ones hand off the bars:shifty:
