Jolly is replacing another less kind word...

So it's the first day of uni and I've gotta get into town early to sort out some stuff, wanna get in before 9 which means I've gotta boost in when it's jolly rush hour! Knowing I needed petrol I leave about 7:45am and aim towards jolly Takanini Gull as it's just off the motorway. Arrive at the jolly Gull, remove gloves, open tank, lift nozzle and wait for the friendly jolly gas attendant to pump it through. Nope, that wasn't happening, this jolly lady is signaling for me to replace pump and pay her a visit. I signal that I dunno how much jolly cash I'd need to put in. Nope, gotta go in.

So I'm in a rush and in I go, shaking my head, convo follows :

Me "Please turn the pump on"
Jolly lady "You must prepay the amount you'd like"
Me "Do you know how much my tank will take"
Jolly lady "No, you must prepay a certain amount"
Me "Please just turn the pump on"
Jolly lady "We can't... sir" in a patronising tone.
Me "I'm pretty sure you can"
Jolly lady "No we can't... sir, blah blah blah, look, pump 1, enter, nope doesn't work... sir"
Me kinda irate now "Well I know you can because I come here quite often and they always turn it on for me, since when haven't you been able to?
Jolly lady "For over a year sir"
Me "Well I've been coming here within the past jolly year and have not needed to pre-pay once"
Jolly lady "No you haven't sir, we can't do that"
Me "WTF?" *spots eftpos out of order* "And WTF cash only? Jolly Gull"

Storm out, throw gloves on, take like 1min to put key in as I'm so annoyed, start bike, place both pumps next to me on the ground, and leave. If they need to waste my time then I'll waste theirs.

Went down to Shell with all their pumps on "prepay" and the friendly dude chucks my pump on and it flows in. Pay the man while he's telling me "Yip everyone's on prepay but I can see you just need the pump on". That man deserves a hug.

Not normally this easily aggravated, but was in a rush, and had to lane-split from before Manukau all the way into Wellesley.

Jolly pre-pay pumps! And jolly power hungry gas attendants! You should seen the way she looked "down" to me and talked in a slightly mocking voice.

Get to uni after 9, jolly! Cheers Squiggles for leaving the locker key out hidden for me! :niceone:

One thing I noticed, if you look like you are going to steal fuel, they kinda assume you are.

The other day at the pump (all on pre-pay) dude next to me looking pretty sketchy, sunnies, sideways cap and hoodie pulled up on a hot day, tries to fill up, of course the pump does not work, I stand there for about 20 secs and my pump works no problem, go inside to pay, this guy is still in there trying to get the guy to turn on the pump without pre-paying.

But sounds like you hit that one person who is dumb as a post. Try giving them your card next time.

I really can't understand why people would think motorcycle riders would steal fuel, we get what max $20/30$ in our bikes, is that really worth stealing with getting our bike/rego/face etc on security camera.

Omg I really should go there sometime in the car to do that. Ha!

Lol yeah but then I've gotta gear up and ride 10km to the petrol station and back! I just assumed I'd be able to fill up at a petrol station in the morning... But with no petrol flowing, and no eftpos, they made it pretty hard for me!

Yep they go on about how people are stealing petrol and that's why they use prepay... Are the cops not good enough to catch people after full vehicle, license plate, and face shots are caught on camera?

Why don't they just install wheel spikes that pop up when someone tries to drive off!

Argh... Home now... Gull ain't getting my business again.

Cars Bikes , yes all have a go at leaving without paying even had guy work on to forecourt fill up can and walk back across the road. When I (118k of me) cornered him across road ," oh I forgot" ,I now got a extra fuel can!

Yes, Gull Takanini are rug rider fuckwits. They can, they just don't want to - Gull Rosscommon don't try this sort of shit.

I don't even bother going in if they're wanting prepay any time the doors are open - I just move onto the next place and never go back. Fuck 'em!

He shouldn't be doing work on your forecourt in the first place. There are 118 000 of you? Crikey! No wonder he was scared. Even Chuck Norris couldn't defeat that many.

Had the same happen here at the Mobil....they use to unlock the pumps no worry's...not anymore. Last time (which will be the last time ever) we went there, the jolly lady asked the same questions, and then said '' pay $20 and if it doesn't take that much you can get a refund''....fuck off jolly lady, just unlock it!!

I go to the Shell now.

Coming back from Paeroa, I needed to top up the car. Stood there like a halfwit waiting for the pump to activate. Realised that prepay was in force. Should have just dropped the handle and gone on to Taupo. But no, I went in and asked for $40 and the harridan behind the counter told me that I couldn't do that. I would have to leave my card with her, she'd unlock the pump, I'd put whatever in and then go back in, swipe the card etc. WTF? I'm not leaving an eftpos card to be put in a pile with all the others (the place was packed). I argued with her, and she relented, swiped for $40, pump unlocked and I put $40 in. After I drove off, I thought "The pump wasn't limited to deliver only $40. I could have filled the tank and driven off anyway."
I must have an honest face....

I go to the Shell now.

Same here.

Never on prepay during the day. Hell I even pay for the gas with my lid on.

Chuck could defeat 118,000 Max Preloads whilst juggling chainsaws with his other hand.

Thats a fucken warm up for Chuck.

the cops cant always get there. in almost 3 years at bp, a driveoff was one of my biggest worries. i only had one while i was on shift. thanks to my memory and a collegue who knew the police ph number off by heart, they managed to catch him later that day doing over 100k in a 50k zone. they had stolen almost $90 worth of petrol. but that was more luck than anything.

and as for cameras... you ever seen the picture transmitted by a servo camera? its shit at best. looking at the monitor, i couldnt make out male from female, never mind facial details and plate descriptions. the camera didnt even come into play with my drive off... it was my suspision and decision to memorise the plate that got them caught. and one servo here, the manager is too stingy to even install a camera. so his staff have no back up or protection whatsoever. i refuse to fill up there for that reason. we actually ended up with quite a few of his pissed off staff.

I just had an idea... With the help of that $1 idea already mentioned!

This is a GREAT idea... I think

Well pretty much when I'm bored one day I'll go along to Gull when that same lady is working in the car and pay $1 (or whatever the minimum) at a time, going in, filling up, going in again etc etc... Right so that's what has already been said... BUT!

Eftpos/Credit card transactions cost the company supplying them right? Like for every transaction it costs Gull 40c or something? Well... As I'm on a tertiary account both eftpos and credit transactions are 100% free for me... Sooo... $1 at a time on eftpos will cost Gull almost half what I'm paying them!

Right??!?!

I think I'd probably have a mad laughing fit the entire time too.

A forecourt full of your mates doing the same thing?

Hate pre-pay (assumed guilty until proven innocent), but can sort of handle it in the car, as I always just bang $40 or $50 in it anyway.

Bikes should be exempt.

use credit card, it costs them - depending on your bank eftpos costs you

Stuff the protests, just tell them you are taking your business elsewhere.
It's that simple.

i must say 90% of the times i fill up i do it at the point chev mobil and they hv never asked me to prepay, then again i always take my helmet off... dont know why, just force of habit i guess. the people who get asked to prepay have alot of the time i heard about it kept their helmets on, maybe not seeing your face worries them? id try it and test that theory but i hv a good thing going and it would be a big detour to go find 98 somewhere else.

I drive into a servo, see prepay sign, I drive out of servo.

Can you imagine having to prepay at PaknSave????

I wont go to Gull Takanini for the same reason. Needed to fill the Chariot, was in a rush (running late for school....oops). Saw the prepay signs and was told they stick to that rule when I asked to fill the car, so I said "in that case I'll have $15 and I'll fill it somewhere else later today".
Easily solved. (If I'd had heaps of time I'd have said "forget it then, see ya" but as my fuel needle was on E, which I know for a fact does not stand for "enough", I was desparate!)

This talk of $1 at a time...don't the pumps all have a sticker that states minimum delivery 2 litres? But the idea does have merit. Bit like the one about not using (fuel co of the day) in protest at price hikes...

I think that is a minimum accurate delivery of 2 lt. Anything under that is not guaranteed to be an accurate ammount. Could be wrong though. But you can pump less.

yep, you can pump less than the sticker says. at my bp, we often got in the high school scooter kids. theyd come in every few days, and often, id struggle to get even a liter in some of them. so you can for sure pump less.

i think the prepay vs riders thing comes down to whos working the till. when i was there, bikes NEVER had to prepay, and i made sure that was stuck to by the other staff [it helped having a biker for a boss as well] so, try going in and making friends with some of the staff.
i knew most of the local riders on sight, and just assumed the best of riders i didnt know. BUT, i did use the bike as an excuse to go out and chat.
car drivers were the same... the ones who were in daily got the pumps opened. everyone else was made to pay or leave keys/eftpos card at the counter. we would lean the cards against the computer screen. the computer had the pump numbers along the bottom, and wed put the card in front of the relevant pump... handy when the till was worked by different people.
