I have been living in sunny Auckland for just over a month now and when I tell people that I am moving the Chirstchurch most NOT all of them are incredibly negative. I am either hearing that Chch is full or rednecks, that it just isn't as cosmo as Auckland, it is a suburb of the UK, 'why would you want to move there?', there is nothing down there etc etc.
I have heard similar utternaces and opinions expressed by people (NOT ALL Londoners) who live in London who just do not seem to realise, understand or believe that there is life, culture, countryside, a whole world outside of London.
So what I am looking to know is whether these opinions and this question regarding 'why' is based upon intercity rivalry, jealousy or something else that a foreigner or non-Londoner wouldn't understand? Any insight that would help ther transition would be great.

Don't forget its cold, windy, and you cant get a decent latte. And the roads are shit, there is no racing, and you can't go canoeing in any of the rivers without hitting at least one dead hooker.
Hey, why tell them different? They'll all want to come here.

Employers seem to think there's something so special about Christchurch lifestyle that they pay 30% less than Auckland...

I enjoyed it when I lived down there and the places to ride are endless, road and trail. Go for it :niceone:.

Chch and surrounds are very beautiful, but too cold for this pansy.
I've heard people emphatically say that Chch is very racist. Haven't seen it myself.

It's a metaphor for 'The climate is nice enough to sit outside at a cafe for much of the year.'

In ChCh we'd eat lunch on the front porch of the flat most days - in my view the weather is nice - a cool start in the winter usually resulted in a nice sunny day, though we'd never heard of lattes back then, a pot of tea was fine.

Fukkem, I say.
I lived in Hamilton for years, then moved to Chch for a couple of years. Wish I never left there (did it for job reasons, and because we thought my father-in-law was going to cark it). We had a fantastic time there - the lifestyle was great (better'n anywhere else we've lived) and the climate is a proper one, with continental-type weather, rather then the maritime weather most of UnZud is cursed/blessed with (depends on your preferences).
We had a great lifestyle, doing lots of outdoorsy things. We could wake up in the morning, look out at the weather and decide on the spot to go skiiing: 80 minutes from our door to the carpark of the nearest skifield. Did lots of walking in the hills or Hagley Park, toured the South Island, went into town on the weekend to the market or for a coffee or beer.
Go for it - ignore the naysaying wankers (or, as Cantabrians would have it: "Dorklanders").

I don't mind christchurch - reminds me a bit of brisbane actually.
Has a nice fudge factory and yum cha, plus great access to the rest of the south island esp Kaikoura, Hamner etc etc which you'd love.
She gets pretty damn dry in summer though - all the more reason to go swimming.

Just a wind up really.
Although I have tried 3 times to ride to Akoroa and abandoned due to 'a cyclone' all three times.

Tall poppy syndrome and the great kiwi knocking machine swinging into action... THEY (whoever "they" are) aren't as good as "us"... therefore Chch must be less good.
Same treatment you'll see the Police getting, or any other group you can define.

Take togs for those times.
A proper English coat for winter, is advised!

Since when did people's opinions on something like this matter?

Bless ya.
It is just that from an anthropoligical standpoint I find it amazing that country like NZ with such a small population has the exact same issues as an overpopulated country as UK. I would have thought that Kiwis would have stuck together and united against larger countries.

It is not that the opinions matter, I would move no matter what. I just wonder where these opions come from and why people feel the need for them?

We do if it's Australia.
Go to Christchurch and have a look. In a few weeks time it should be nice, they actually have a real autumn down there.
I think maybe the rascist tag comes from the skinhead shitwits that beat people up in the downtown area in the wee small hours. That may not be particularly racially motivated though, it's quite possible they are equal opportunity thugs.
When It comes to places to live it'd probably be as well to find out where the boi racers go and avoid those places.
Oh, and welcome back

Pretty much true, except for the last bit - we got plenty boy racers.
Not to take anything away from Auckland, I am convinced it is a nice enough big city - with everything that goes with that term. But, if you're going to travel half the way around the globe to settle in a big city the choice would either be Sydney or Melbourne, I wouldn't even consider Auckland. If big city is what you want, why not do it properly?
It has to be said though - I am not a city person.
New Zealand is an awesome place for a huge number of reasons. To point out but a few: you got the nature, you got the space, you got the relaxed lifestyle, good food and wine , you got the good folks, all-up I would rather live here than anywhere else I've been. There are a few downsides of course - poor infrastructure (for a modern country), lower wages, freighting in stuff from overseas is both expensive and takes a long time...
I think you'll like it down here, it really isn't a bad spot.

Christchurch has a better racetrack too...plus one of the best weekend road race tracks around the peninsular.
If you can, try & find a place to live on the peninsular, not in the 'burbs on the flats,....Redcliffs ,Sumner etc is lovely.

Ruapuna is worth a look...
But it IS cold except in a nor'wester when it is stinkin' hot and it drizzles and its only 6 feet above sea level and the sea is freezing and the northeaster blows all bloody summer and there's air pollution and there's the "first four ships" factor and the sports fans are totally one eyed...bit like most parts of NZ really...

I am not really a city person but I have to go where the work is and Christchurch was the place where I found a job. If I am going to work in a city I would rather have the chance to live in the countryside and commute easily to work than have to live in the city. I think from the looks of it Chch will be the place where it will be easy to do this. I love the countryside and Chch has some beautiful scenery too. I would never live in Sydney as I really didn't like it at all and the people I encountered were not friendly, nothing like Kiwis!
As for poor infrastructure I was amazed at how incredibly quickly my work permit came through (2 weeks) and IRD phoned me within 24 hours with my number (if you count government within the infrastructure). This would take forever in the UK. The wages in my sector are higher then in the UK and I am not freighting in stuff just yet so wont dare think about that yet!
