Off on a trip this weekend. Leaving Friday night. Anyone know what stations are open during the wee small hours of the morning? Is the one in Kaikoura still 24/7?

Kaikoura be your only hope....Amberly will most likely be open to.
Only a touch over 300kms.....
Carry a liter or 2?
(camping stores sell nice 1 lt plastic fuel bottles)

I was planning to have a jerry can strapped to the bike. Hoping I wouldn't need it though.

The BP in Kaikoura, its 311 km chch-Blenheim, Blenheim has several 24hr stations, the one on Grove Road, just before the Humpy Bridge, right before you head out of Blenheim is the last, and the most direct in that neck of the woods. Take the can anyway. Have a nice ride!

One Amberley station is open 24/7 so while it is not far out of Chch can top up there. I am not sure anything in Kaikoura is open 24hrs - could be wrong. A couple of years back there was nothing - so my son found out at the top of Weld pass (10km short of Blenheim). There is truck stop in Ward but don't know what sort of gold they take.

Amberley is 24hr... not sure if any in Kaikoura are... may pay to give the BPup there a ring to see what times they are open...

2-litre Coke bottle will do the trick (or maybe two?)

Throw it away afterwards.

(I left one full of petrol for over a year without deterioration)

not sure what the range is on my tank. Maybe if I took it really slow, 70 on the straights, coasting downhills, get off and push it uphills...I might just make it. Supposed to be on a ferry by 5:40am so I really don't want to run outta gas.

dude it will end in tears, make sure you carry gas

a 4l oil container will do the trick, then toss it away when you have used it.

fill up to the absolute brim in amberley, and you will make it to blenheim.

and make sure that wee honda is tuned up proper like.

have a good trip:done:

Its tuned as well as my father and I can get it without stripping it down and rebuilding it.

I've already got a nice big jerry can, its about half the size of my tank. About 5L I think. That should do the trick. Just have to figure out how to attach it to the bike. I don't have a pack rack. Any ideas on this guys?

kinda depends on what else you are carrying and how long you are away for

a disposable container makes sense for those reasons, why carry a jerry can around for the rest of your trip?

The rest of my trip will be back to Christchurch on Sunday night. I'm parking the bike in a storage facility while I'm over in Wellington.

the rest of my gear will be a bit of food, a change of clothes, a sleeping bag and some tools(Just incase the unthinkable happens) Hoping a backpack and a tank bag will hold all of that. The bike itself has a nice place to keep the tools.

I started this thread (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=87898&highlight=hour+stations+fuel) a while ago, in the aim of helping these requests.

You'll find a spreadsheet with hopefully all 24 hour stations in NZ listed. If you see anything you can update, or add, let me know, and I will do so. :2thumbsup

Apparently someone reported something in Kaikoura, by the wharf, but haven't been able to confirm any specifics?

What time are you leaving? Im down for a trip to Picton in the wee small hours if you want some company?

Neither of the 2 stores in Kaikora are 24 hour. The BP opens at 6am. There is a truck stop (need a fuel card I think), and a credit card pump around somewhere in Kaikora (the south end I think).

Speaking from experience, my rain suit when all tucked into its pouch makes an ok pillow if your sleeping on a deck outside a pub in Kaikora.

Also take earplugs if you havnt got any already.

I was gonna ask you if I could borrow your rain suit. Just in case I needed a pillow:lol: It better not bloody rain, my gear keeps water out worse than a sieve keeps water in!

You can come along if you want. Not sure what time I'm leaving, not sure how long it will take to get to Picton on my bike. Want to be there by 5 though. Probably about 11 or 12 I would think.

I've got a credit card so using a credit card pump would be fine. Didn't the banks put a stop to using credit cards at pumps though? You can't seem to be able to do it anywhere in Christchurch now.

Mention this to Amy and I'll Take a sledgehammer to the Raptor. She does NOT like me riding a bike, let alone riding it in the dark to Picton!

Thanks for the info. Will be sure to look into every single gas station I see that's got lights on and may just be open. All in the name of my fellow bikers who are as crazy and stupid as I am and like to ride their bike a quarter of the length of the country in the middle of the bloody night.:crazy:

Na the service stations stopped doing it because your not very likely to buy a chocolate bar if you dont have to walk inside past the rows and rows of lollies.

They dont make much money on fuel, most of their profit comes from the drinks and lollies that people buy.

Yes at south bay where the touristy whalewatch boats are, are 2 pumps (1 on the wharf, one before the launching ramp) with fuelpumps operating on creditcards.....
have used it just before x mas to take 500 liters of petrol in little launch......
Only one of the 2 worked.. but both are easy accessible by bike or car....
(only the wrong one was accessible from the water to...)
