So who's going?
www.offlimits.co.nz
Saturday and Sunday, 28-29 March 2009, TUSSOCKBUSTER two-day trail:
The area for the two-day trail ride is massive – 63,000 hectares of pristine land – rolling hills, unpolluted rivers and lakes, native bush, gravel roads and hundreds of kilometres of tank tracks that contain no whoops at all.
Mike Ross, the chief organiser, has developed four main tracks ranging in terrain and difficulty. The first three tracks range from 10km-45km with detours for difficult areas and short cuts home. The forth track is up to 90km with river crossings, formed trails and shortcuts home prior to the 50km mark. There is even the opportunity to ride your bike right onto the top of the dam wall at Lake Moawhango (a massive lake hidden just off the Desert Road). A fuel tanker, providing 95 octane fuel, will be positioned at the 50km point and fuel can be purchased for $2 per litre. Two kids tracks will also be available. One is right beside the camping area and the other is a flat to gently rolling 5km track.
The camping facilities are out of this world! It’s like a new level of luxury. Camping will be on and around the Waiouru rugby field (just beside the Army Museum). The camping area is nicely mowed, flat, sheltered by trees and has hot showers and flush toilets. Additional portaloos will be provided so that riders and campers don’t have to walk too far. To top it all off, the Waiouru rugby club rooms are right there and will be open for your use. Once the riding is finished for the day, enjoy a few beers (the Army has really low priced beers) and watch videos and photos of the day’s riding in the comfort of the rugby club.
The Army is going all out to impress. There will be tanks, trucks, artillery and soldiers all on display at the camping area. Some of the rides start from within the camp so there are additional opportunities, as you ride through the camp, to see how soldiers live, what they do and the equipment they use.
. Already, Blue Wing Honda and the Honda Riders Club are enthusiastically embracing the concept. They plan to have their own ‘Honda village’ at the event and promote TUSSOCKBUSTER via their rider’s club database alongside other manufacturers, motorcycle shops and clubs. Expect to see hundreds of Honda riders attending the event. It will be great to see all the other brands, bike shops and motorcycle clubs organising their own groups at the camping zone. It could all look pretty impressive.

Mine and Oldskools family will be there. We are bringing down a Army tent (going with the theme) as well for our pits area. I'll be in a White Subaru with a big blue furniture trailer. Heading down on Friday arvo/early evening if anyone else wants to tag along with us.

Fire extinguishers are only recommended, not compulsary (spelling). I have to get one at some point but still trying to find the best configuration for fitting it to my bike.

Me and Evan were discussing about maybe picking you up on the way. I will have room in my car and we will both have trailers to fit your bike and gear. Just been busy out in the garage fixing bikes so haven't been online to pitch the idea to you.

The start of the track last year was right in the corner of the camping paddock. Big signs there showing the different tracks. Was an awesome ride as well(except for the part where I lost the kdx in the whangaehu river.) Fkn freezing ride after that! Take extra clothes.

Broken rib and arm respectively:doh:. Hope you guys both heal up quickly!
Krad and me got home around 7:30. Both kinda knackered and sore. We did the dam buster (90k) and a couple of the little learner/home loop on Saturday, then did marsden's this morning, which I really liked. Hope everyone who did dam buster went and checked out the dam up close, it was quite amazing! Looked like something out of an MC escher drawing.
It was a pretty awesome ride. Getting to see all the army stuff was neat, and the scenery on the nature side of things was amaaaazing. I wasn't very good at the river crossings since they were so slippery. The uphill on dam buster (which was darn near vertical!) did me in too, my bikes not really a lugger, possibly could have done it if I'd taken a less loose line. The loose stone roads on dam buster were also awwwful, but on the other hand, the fast bits were really really fun. Apart from a couple hairy moments, it was really well marked out, and the ride seemed really well organised as far as recovery and sorting out all the stuff that got broken or damaged on the first day.
Gutted I've got work in the morning, I could really use a sleep in.

mate of mine drowned his bike in the 1st river crossing in the dam buster loop, thanks to the guys that lent us tools to get it back running, got a 250F running in about 20 minutes which i did not think was 2 bad,

ended up doing the tussock trail as well which had some really cool fast and flowing trails,

was an awesome ride, congrats to the guys that put it on, will be back next year,

It amazes me how dumb some people are,
At BOTH rider briefings , we were told that some roads are two way an to stay left so as not to become a statistic.
Also an ADITIONAL message on the small group briefing prior to leaving we were reminded again of two way traffic.
On the Dam track we had just passed a "DANGER KEEP LEFT TWO WAY TRAFFIC" sign and some fuckwit passes us and drifts his bike around a blind corner on the RHS ........
This is the sort of moron that, when he kills himself by riding under a truck, fucks up future events for everyone else .....
So a big thumbs up the the organises, and a big fuck off and dont come back to the guy who cant read or understand simple instructions ....

Sorry to hear of the injuries, we were parked by the ambos and both days they seemed to have a steady stream of customers.

Did Sniper Alley and Dam Buster on saturday which was an interesting mix of tight (Sniper Alley) and fast and dusty. You really had to pick your places to pass on the Dam Buster so you could see your target, otherwise it was sneak up through the dust cloud and try to locate the dust maker to get past. Luckily, there wasn't actually a lot of traffic on either route as most people we passed seemed to be admiring the river crossings or the scenery, very good of them!

Due to an altercation with a bank I was slightly sore on sunday so did the Tussock trail and a couple of loops of Marsdens Post which were neat rides with a good mix of open ground and a few uphills and down hills to keep you excited.

My picks were:

Sniper Alley: for real gradients!
Dam Buster: for great scenery shots and peak elevation.
Tussock Trail: The first half on the open rolling country, a perfect sunday morning place to stop for a rest.
Marsdens Post: Playing spot the infantry hiding in the tussock....but the run through the last part of Marsden, where the Dam Buster joined was a nice ride through the flax then some easy hills. A great wind down.

So, thanks to the Army and all those involved, once I can walk again, I'll start calling it a perfect weekend.

Well we were camped next to the fuckwits who kept everyone up on the sat night, euthanasia would be too good for them!

Funny that they complained about the noise in the morning when we helped tow start the chaps bike next to us after he drowned it the day before and sat on the side of the track for a few hours before riding someones elses bike out.

Thats what I liked about the event, those that were willing to help. We stopped and helped drag bikes out of bogs, pick kids out of the tussock, and let people clear their bikes off the trails.

How come some people are so fuckin selfish they can't even wait for a fallen rider?

At one point I was down and one guy was riding over my bike to get past? I fuckin ripped into him and he just looked confused

I am very sore today!

Trails were awesome! The little expert side trail was good fun on the way out to dam buster! And sniper was a real workout! The ruts coming up some of the hills kept biting me, hard sometimes, but the only injuries I have are the blisters on the hands.

Def going back next year! Best 20 bucks I ever spent........

Was funny, sitting at the bottom of a hill climb as one of us three picked a kid up and some prat comes flying by both of them nearly clipping them as he lost control on the same rut as the kid, mention karma to my mate.

And who do we find lying on his arse not a few hundred metres further along? We may of just ridden past that fellow.

These rides are for everyone fast or slow, sure common courtesy need apply but sometimes you have to pop small gaps at full throttle cause another rider is snaking all over a narow track and blocking the way.

But yeah, was a good ride, one of the better trails iv done in a while, still cant get over the size of the place...land for africa!

Good job waking up those noisy bastards with the tow start first thing :)

I was tempted to test out the rev limiter by their tent first thing in the morning.... just to make sure it still worked you know?... Not sure where exactly they were though, the music was so loud it seemed to come from everywhere.

Speaking of lending a hand... Punch was stuck on a hill for about 20mins and no one helped her out until she had walked her bike back down again by which time no help is actually needed. Obviously it can be a bit of a bastard stopping mid hill as getting going again can be a pain, but for most good riders this isn't a problem.... I ended up having to back track about 1km off to the side of the track to find out what was going on. Literally tussock busting, it was actually pretty fun  Before I decided to back track I was waiting just off the trail. The trail was wide enough to drive a tank through but there was still the odd moron that caned past me ridiculously close. Not sure exactly what they were trying to prove.

my biggest gripe of the weekend is quads. fucken quads.

at ne point of the sniper alley shortly after the long twisty downhill tight section there was a quad half way up a hill, he had fucked it up, tried again, flipped it over, and then him and his mate were just standing there, while it was blocking the whole track, just looking at it. meanwhile theres bikes queing up for miles behind them. eventually he rode it back down (the way it was facing while they were just stainding there)

then theres all the other times the quads were stuck and in the way

and the quad i met coming over a blind rise the wrong way on a fast section of track...

then theres the quads in the no quads section stuck

there is however a proper place for quads. and i know exactly where it is....

on a farm. farming.

I couldn't count how many people went past me there, took forever to get the bike back down cause I kept getting people carving up next to me showering me in roost...Did get a bit of a chuckle if said people got stuck where I did. They got going part way up the hill tho, I needed to get back down to get some more momentum where the ground was a bit more packed down. The person that did offer me help at the bottom was a kid of about 13, very sweet of him, I was grateful although I don't know how well I showed it, had gotten myself into a bit of a state by that time
On the upside there were lots of really nice people out there lending a hand, including some nice fellas who held onto my bike for me when I was on a funny angle and couldn't reach my leg over to get back on :sweatdrop thanks nice people!

Sorry to hear so many had moments with poor riding by others, personally I didn't see much (1 guy making a poor pass on sunday) but it might be worth remembering that the people making those crappy moves are probably not very competent riders and are struggling themselves with control. I don't mean to condone that behaviour but the people in control of their bikes are choosing their lines and not causing problems while the guys that are struggling to get anywhere tend to run over/ crash into almost anything. I doubt there is a solution to this, it's part of learning to ride, all you can do is try and be as careful as your skills allow you to be and recognise the lack of competence in others.

Oh, and wear full body armour.

Bro, these people that all these nice KBers are complaining about sound just like us? lol

Worst offence I ever witnessed was by dave when he tried to go up the "no Quads" section on Desert storm a few years ago (on his raptor) he ended up endoing backwards down the track and taking out a couple of oncoming riders. What a muppet, couldn't help but laugh.

Or there was the time he full speed sideswiped a bank at "trail blazer"... a big bolder came rolling out of the bank and wiped out the front wheel of the kid he was trying to pass. Not funny i know but man sometimes you find yourself in a strange little place where all you see is red and you just gotta be a hoon.

I know i've pissed people off on trail rides before, never knowingly but sometimes you just fuck up, I'm sure everone's done it. As for offering help... i will always help someone who needs it but if anyone ever asks me "do you need a hand?" ..... fuck no i don't need a hand. (in the nicest possible way) Pride... it's a weak mans game

Oh just to save face i've never owned a sports quad and i have done humanity a favour by converting two of the fastest most insane quad riders to 2 wheels

Pity I didn't know you were going to Tussock Buster, you could have had a ride with us. If you're up in Auckland any time, drop me a line. It was great fun. Went down with a bunch of guys, but dumped them and a girlfriend and I did a couple of laps of Marsden Point! It was awesome.
