Not if the tester doesn't like it.

It could pay to contemplate this a while before actually doing it. I saw at least one report where the owner complained that the bike wouldn't run properly because of a lack of back pressure and he had to start welding washers into the pipe in an effort to fix the problem...

Thanks for the feedback, guess I really need a set of cheap donor factory pipes to play with. I just want a bit more snarl than the whistling it does now. This procedure seems pretty common in the US, and the soundtracks I have heard sound really good but must be borderline warrantable at best. Was curious if anyone had done it and had the decibels measured.

If anyone has a set of factory cans sitting around please let me know.

Cheers.

Defintely the cheapest and best way to getting more out of a stock cb900... Many of the $1000+ cans are too loud and don't sound that good anyway, so go for it!

Pm'd you about stock cans..

yes .. done it on mine .. WOF is no problem .. looks dead standard :)

and doesn't increase noise that much, but changes to a throaty tone

I did it to mine and it was the best thing i ever did for my 900 Hornet. I have a poc if you are in or near Auckland. Cheap as chips and i even had a guy admit to me that my stock debaffled cans sounded better than his micron ones in his Hornet.....that must have hurt!

I've done a sneaky semi on mine.

I bored out the rear but left a flange. Removed the stock 25mm outlet - this takes a while and a lot of wiggling to break the internal factory spot weld.

I made up a couple of 35mm outlet inserts and, well inserted them in the end!

The first set of inserts I made were straight through and at the time I thought loud - they were not really it's just that the stock pipes were so dam quiet it was a big difference. So I made a final set of curved ones that knocked a few db off it. I've probably prefer that extra few db now but I glued them in with a high temp industrial glue and the curved ones won't come out! Thats some good glue :2thumbsup

I've only had to get one WOF on the bike - it was with these modded pipes - the inspector had just failed a Harley and told me he fails anything without stock pipes or pipe certification. Quote "yours are fine mate":whistle::whistle:

I'm in Christchurch - PM me and we can catch up sometime if you want a look, listen.

I've a plan for a set of project mufflers for the Hornet - I've a
metal working company rolling up a pair of cones for me ........I'm making something a wee bit different than the standard slip on cans.

Hi Allan, I have now done the end cap 7 baffle removal now and you are right, compared to stock it is now pretty loud. It is suprising how much more consious you are of your riding style when you actually can hear what is going on.

It would be good to meet up some time - do you go to the WNR's / Maintenance evenings?

Ah well, just in case anyone is contemplating it, the bike went through it's wof no problems with the bafflectomy, certainly makes the bike more interesting to ride. Carry on all. ;-)

Epic thread dredge

Has anybody in Auckland done this and if so can I have a listen?

Im also thinking of just drilling 4 big holes around the stock outlet.

nz spokes--cone over and have a look at my Hornet. The hislungs have gone and its got a 4 into 1 setup that exits to the right and forward of the back wheel. In all honesty I'd be happy to swap it out for a factory /quiet system

Cheers, I may well do that. Ive drilled holes around the main outlet and that seems to sound good.

This mod can be a WOF issue if done to a point that they are to loud, I use to issue WOF's and us to use a noise level tester for testing aftermarket and modified pipes (which LTSA is pushing for all WOF testers to have and use, not law yet but they are pushing for it) if your bike is over 96dB at 5000rpm it is a fail. The suggestion to remove the final section and to replace it with the larger exit pipes would be what I would suggest to do as this will deepen the exhaust note with out being excessively noisy.

The WOF is not the only issue as some police that specialise in traffic enforcement have been issued with noise testers and if you are pulled over on the road due to excessive noise you get pink stickered. Could be a long walk home for a bit of extra noise if not done wright.
