Place: Porirua Elim Christian Church/Driving Testing Centre, Wellington
Time: 10:45
Bike: GZ250
Ear Piece: Yes
Hi ya'll, i'm writing this review of my restricted license test to outline what you need to do to obtain this coveted 6R Yellow Plastic Fantastic license upgrade from your L-Plate rider :baby:. I've seen a few thread and have tried googled it about this test but not many are focus on the issues. So I'll keep it short and simple just so you can follow it and practice when preparing for the test.
Length of test: range anything from 10, 15 minutes to 30 minutes (like mine) depends on your testing officer.
Ear Piece: This one is depended on the officer preference of traditional mirror indication or modern Walkie-talkie with ear piece. I know the guy (Andrew) in Porirua did provided me with one and it was extremely helpful (aka not having to look in mirror and make out what the instructor is indicating left or right )
He will say: "Next intersection, turn left/right/go straight."
or "When it's safe pull over".
Preparation:
>Look up the weather for the intended test date, no good riding in poor weather and slippery surface.
>Try to book the time before lunch time (12:00PM) and before school finishing time (3:00PM or 3:10PM). This will substantially help your conditions or passing if you do it near a school.
>Arrive at the test 1 hour in advance, it's recommended that you practice your riding around area of the test to get used to road condition (i.e. patch, tar seal, pot holes, man holes, speed bump ...etc).
>Wear protective gear (leather or textile), this will help in the marking process.
>Bike is in working condition (WoF, Rego, L-Plate, Tyre, Gas, Brake, Indicators etc...)
The test:
>Ride like what you learn in the Road Code, go slow in corner, watch for blind cagers, middle aged woman cager, or people with funny hats :buggerd: (credit to Annie). If they don't see you, make eye contact or honk.
>If it's a hot day, or your visor can fog up easily, it's best to leave your visor up to ride. But watch out for dust, bugs, flying cows, hot females etc... as they can distract you from your riding :shifty:
>The instructor will tell you the speed you need to ride in. I.e. In 50kmh zone, ride between 40-50kmh. In 70kmh ride between 60-70kmh. And stick to that, no more, no less :oi-grr:.
>When you stop to wait at Give Way sign or at a stop sign, PUT BOTH OF YOUR FEET DOWN, this is an important criteria in the full license test (Subject to change with your Testing Officer, so beware if they let you pass or not).
>When turning at Give way or Stop sight. Indicate. Look to the right, then left, then right again, look in mirror then take off. Turn off indicator.
>Keep your eye on 3 things most of the time: Speed limit, mirror, and straight in front of you.
>When doing a U-Turn, do it without putting your feet down. I got pinged for this . So practice U-Turn with your clutch and throttle control to perfect this. Should be a piece of cake.
>Relax when you ride, keep a relaxed grip, your thighs should stick to the tank, and be alert of all corners and turns.
>When marking, the Testing Officer will look for your head movement to mark you for Scanning Environment criteria, so turn your head and actually look left and right or at mirror so he can tell that your looking, not just gleaming in the corner of your eyes.
After the test, he will tell what you need to do in the Full License test to pass. The restricted test should be a breeze, just demonstrate to them that you can ride a motorcycle and obey the rules.
:done: :punk:
Credit: Wellington Motorcycle for top blokes and fantastic job on offering me the possibility to ride. Hats down to ya Pete. :first:
P.S. Could any mod sticky this or move it to the appropriate column. :girlfight:
Was nothing like that when I did mine.....in 1975:eek5::shit:
Somewhat related...to get a license here in Kyrgyzstan there is an official police document describing the process, tests, legal documents...it goes on for about a page then the last line reads....Or you can buy one (This was from an engish translation.)
I had a full NZ license, and correctly, for a small fee, I could exchange this for a Kyrgyz license...however the obsticles make that is impossible to do and I ended up forking out USD300 for the priviledge of driving on Kyrgyz goat tracks.

In my country it'll cost you 200usd for the same result lol. Plus there is no graduated licensing so you can ride it straight up. Oh, it's actually 300usd for no limit cc motorcycle lol

Thanks for the info
I too am looking at the R stage soon, looking at your experience, I think I should book in fairly soon. Might practice the U turn thing a bit, not something I have done a lot of, only once I think since my "Car Park Stuff". Lol

stricted test on a zx10r? haha you have fun with that :gob:Just got my restricted, had to borrow a 250 for the test and found it pretty straight forward, just the change of bike took some getting use to, footrests not in the same place, revs to take off, no gear indicator etc.
Noticed the weight of my bike after getting back on it straight after the test, very slow to turn in comparison to the 250, can't throw it around anywhere near as easily. The 250 was actually fun in the city, the lack of power and spongy suspension and brakes killed it though. I was planing to get a zx14 or hayabusa when I get my full for more torque down low and comfort for longer rides, but may actually look at some 600 sports for fun value after experiencing a lighter bike, definitely liked the maneuverability

LoL, looking back at writing this thread, it actually was easy to read as a newbie on bikie. And should have stick to riding like it nonetheless.
Congrats on getting the license koiwoi, it's piss easy if you're not too nervous.
Don't forget the bling is you find this helpful >:)

Yeah, those flying cows are a bitch. Also, watch out for discarded fridges in the middle of the road. They're a nuisance.

Took my restricted at the same place last month - had read some bad stories from a few years ago about this testing centre but everything was sweet - it was over in 10 minutes.
Now looking at doing my Streettalk course as itching to move up to the big boys toys now.
Anyone done the Streettalk course ? - apart from getting the restricted period down does it teach you much?

A lot of it depends on the tester. It might be nice to have a thread just on testers and testing stations.

I just want to confirm that the right line to ride on the road is inline with the right-hand rear wheel of the car in front of you?
I am about to sit my test

I did my 6R a couple of months ago & didnt even have to do a U turn. Just went for ride around block pretty much. traffic was heavy but. Manukau at 9am on a weekday. as I seem to spend most of my bike time in heavy traffic situation normal. Just had to remember not to split or go for small gaps as tester in car would not be able to follow.

Yes and no!
I did my full last week and tester told me after i passed that only issue was my position on the road and it was me not being in centre of the lane but close to the while lines....so i guess it depends on who you get, i would suggest sit smack bang in the middle of your lane unless there are parked cars on the side.
Either way its nothing you are going to fail on so rather concetrate on other things like speed, mirrors and indicating....

I was told at my restricted and at my full test - both of which I passed, ride at the speed limit of 50. do not go under it or you are thought to be a hazard to other drivers.
My speedo was wrong and I nearly failed because I was not doing 50km, I was doing closer to 40 than 50. I clarified this when I did my full test and was told to speed rather than go too slow (wtf?) So I hauled ass on the open road part of the test and passed! Weird.......
I would double check with the tester, or stick to 50k or whatever the signs say

Ditto! Tester told me to speed up as well in 80K zone (i had about 85 km/h on the speedo) and he told me he wont fail me if i go 5kms over as thats fine..... but as you say clarify all this with him before the ride, at least he will see you are sensible person and iam sure they always appreciate friendly and polite person who wants to chat about safety/rules but dont be a kiss ass!
(iam pretty sure being friendly scored me some points right there)

Anyone done a 6R or 6F test in Mt Maunganui?
I understand that all Tauranga candidates go over to the Mount to do their road tests.
Just wanted to know what area the tests goes through - good excuse to get some riding in. "But Dear, I have to go over to the Mount to familiarise myself with the roads where I'll be doing my restricted license test in four months time."
Good point about having a chat about the examiner's attitude to speed, below 50 you will be a bloody hazard to other road users - and a hazard to yourself because the other road users will likely hit you.

Hi all
Sitting my 6R this week (hope the weather is kind to me!!). I just have a query about the opening post where it says put both feet down when stopped?
What have others found? Must this be done or is the usual over on 1 foot fine?

When I did mine the examiner warned me for rolling through a stop sign so i would be inclined to put both feet down & be sure to totally stop.
I'm doing my full in the morning & the forcast is rain, oh joy.

Yeah right. With only one examiner at Mt Maunganui I had to book two weeks ahead for my 6R test next Thursday the 26th. I was told that the test will go ahead come rain, hail, snow - test will be cancelled only if the road is flooded.
Guess I'll just ride slower if its raining, surely they'll accept slowness if it is in the interests of safety.

I found the hardest part of the 6R was having to do a U turn on a sports bike on a reasonably narrow street.

Wow, Nice Post, i think i'll go to it, i have semi mastered the U-Turn on my bike, its abit hard tho, just wondering if you pass everything but the U-Turn part if you do it..... would you still fail and need to resit it??? that's pretty much what i'm worried as i don't have much time to learn it or i'm just to tried from work =(

The U turn on the restricted test was in a culdesac (spelling?) you know the dead end street that has the turning area. I did heaps of those at slow speed - I just slowed right up to nearly stopped, and quietly popped down into first and did it from there.

Before I went for my Restricted I just practiced Hill starting. Am totally useless at those still...lol.. And U Turns in a park car park.
Basically I would indicate left, pull over to stop, check mirrors, check in front, check over shoulder, indicate right, look to where I was going and off I went then indicated left to pull over and wait for instruction.
Thats what I did on my restricted test. My UTurn was in a very narrow side street with parked cars on either side.

I passed my 6R yesterday, :woohoo: amazing really......I was sure I would fail, and the nerves were getting to me a bit. The first time I ever rode a motorbike(2 wheeled) was when I went for training to achieve my basic handlers. 6 months on I have my restricted.
The U turn was what I dreaded most, but I managed to achieve it on a busy road, which was narrow, fairly sloping and had parked cars.
My tester commented on my road positioning which I thought was supposed to be behind right rear wheel of cars etc... which I was doing but he wanted to see me more in the middle of my lane.
It was good to get out on the open road to wind up a bit. :scooter:
Overall the test was easier than I thought it would be, and if I can pass it anyone can.
My only complaint was the weather, it would've been better if the blustery southerly had stayed away. But I was fairly used to it by the time I rode the 30km in to do the test in Ashvegas.
The tester was brilliant and explained things well, and used a decent radio set which was clear to hear.

It must be LAM's approved and legal. With scooters they must be seen to be safe to be on the road. eg: all lights fitted must work and vehicle up to WOF standard.
Instant recorded fail if it is not.

Yes it is a new Yamaha NMAX 125 2017.
It is below 250cc and definitely LAMS approved.
The only thing is that they are all automatic (CVT) without any clutch or gear levers.
I am on Learner lic but am planning to go restricted.
Thanks for your advise.

Yes you can if it is not a Moped which it does not appear to be. My wife just her restricted on her Honda PCX 150 scooter earlier this year and then her full licence in June.
Did this through Passmasters.
Her full licence of course will only be valid 12 months from restricted but good to fast track it when you can.

how did you go???
unfortunately i didn't pass - i had an rude guy - lol first off the start wasn't to good, i asked what his earpiece connection was for the walkie talkie cause i didn't know if they clean them & wanted to use mine, so he pulled it out and plug it back in again (wrong connection type) we got the bikes and connected the earpiece up i couldn't hear anything it wasn't working he quoted to me "Are you deaf in the ear" ummm no!!!... and oh look he didn't plug in the earpiece correctly - secondly he told me to switch of my gopro camera, cause i use one for always when i ride you never know, and i was like why "cause it i acts up with the walkie talkies and can cut the connection" which i know was a load of BS, cause talkies work on an MHZ base, where my GOPRO is wifi but wasn't on but works on an Ghz base (and no action cams operate on MHZ LOL no way that it would interfere ... anyways cut it short LOL, he said i failed to stop at a stop sign "but i STOPPED ! but had moved forward slowly cause there was an damn VAN parked on my right side blocking my view how the !! can i see what car is speeding down??" then just my luck failed on stopping at an amber (it was one of those moment where its green and just bout ummm 5 or 6 foot it turned amber and he was further back from me .like WTF srsly you were 5 meters behind me and i was no way safe to stop, i would had to pretty much do an sudden all breaks down firmly so i continue.... then!!! he was like why are you riding in second gear.... ??? i always ride in second gear when im around shops etc... my bike at 3 to 4k rpm at 50 on second, you want me to stall if i go in 3rd?? (idk) i was just so nervous cause he was pretty much to the point yelling at me "he had no reason to say that...!!! if i had my gopro on i would of PASSED 100%.... but ummmm anyways i'm about to take the resit again, hopefully i dont get the same person again! .... i think i had an tester who had an bad day =S Sigh.....

Sounds like an arse hat. How does an offline GoPro interfere with a walke talkie? Your phone is more likely to cause interference.
Where was the test?
Regarding the stopping thing, I had to stop quickly at a give way on my test and the instructor nearly rear ended me. You didn't think it was safe to stop on the orange so you proceeded.
Wonder if that Rastuscat dude on here can shed some light on what you've mentioned?

I've videod people doing stuff they then plausibly deny.
Never let the facts get in the way of a good KB post.

In my experience people are most likely to fail from an immediate fail error (IFE), a vertical pattern, or a horizontal pattern, than 25 overall.

I just done my 6F with one of your mates at Dan Ornsby. The IFE was the only concern for me, not noticing until a speed sign until its too late or double yellows etc..but nailed it; 7/15 points marked down. Marked down on a bit of mirror checking, missed checking a couple of side streets and my positioning going into left hand turns wasn't right in urban areas.
What do you mean by vertical/horizontal pattern?

The marking sheet is a matrix.
Behaviors are on the vertical columns, scenarios are on the horizontal rows.
If you have too many of any particular behaviour (for example, head checks), or commit too many at any particular scenario (for example, intersections), that forms a pattern.
It's kind of complex.
Good that you passed. If it was Dan you know you are riding well, he's strict.
