Sooo... tempting. At the moment though I really need to clear one bike out. There's no room to do anything in the garage. Plus the cash would come in handy.

Hmmm......I must be missing something here. Lovely bike, first of the watercooled quattros, yep all good, but according to Trademe, sellers want $10 - $28,000 for what is an early 90s machine. :Pokey: Can understand a Darmah in good nick being worth something but why is the 888 so special?

Simple. Because I like the shape and it's got more poke than an 851.
Darmahs are just horrible old bikes. Every man and his dog has a 916. So I'd get the in between model. Modern enough to be acceptable in the handling department, but almost a calssic in a way.

Cool. Looks like the 916 holds it's value too from TM asking prices. My ST4 is a 916 and I loves it. Whats interesting is an ST4 which is newer, has touring ergonomics and good for long-distance work, can be bought cheaper than the pure sports 916. Go figure. But I do like the 888 and 916 shape. :2thumbsup

somemone wanna elaborate some pros and cons here tween this an the r100gs for me?I would be a returning rider with lots of road experience,6'3".did have a dt3 many moons ago and did lots of akatarawas etc then.At this stage i dont envisage doing real trail riding but The RRR and the wairarapa ride a week or so ago seems like the sort of thing i would like to do.I also plan some overnight camping trips using say the conservation dept camp sites,so dont want to be stopped by a roughish ford or the like.I must say i am mightily biased towards a shaft drive bike.

If you search hard enough you will find detractors for all aspect of both bikes ,but at the end of the day they are both ideal for the tasks you have in mind so its just a matter of what floats your boat, if you have a shaft thing then ride the shaft !

this is true of course but the interweb seems to be full of people who have NO TOLERANCE for other bikes...would appreciate real world exp withthe said bikes.Couple of examples.According to the web R1000GS are plagued with hall sensor issues and if you dont have a circlip in the gearbox you are doomed...

I haven't had either bike....but sorta close. The XLV750 had a shaft drive, which was good.Things against it were top heavy - at 6'3'' it's not going to be as big a problem for you as me at a puny 5'7'',but you will still be fighting that high CG all the time. You may say you don't care, but might have second thoughts when you pick it up for the 12th time....and the GS riders pass you by.Parts won't be such an issue with the XRV750 as the XLV,but there will be many more ''problems'' getting parts than a BMW.Plus is that Honda V twin just kicks arse! Personally the XRV750 would be the better bike to ride.
I have set up my R65 for gravel road use, opting for the lower bike and free revving engine over a tall GS and lethargic big capacity.A much more planted bike on the road, and the best bike I've ridden for a long time in gravel.Parts availability and ease of maintenance are a big plus for me.
I'd go for the BMW....but an Africa Twin is hard to walk away from.

Ok I,ve had my africa twin for about a year now and am pretty happy with it AFTER you have done the fixes that are problems for these bikes....reg/rec....fuel pump.......(replaced with a facett solid state)....fit engine bars... and of course check the front drive shaft-you have to take the gear lever and side cover off and check the play on the front sprocket, ideally removing that too to inspect the splines on the drive shaft. You have to do this as people and mechanics tighten the chain too tight and destroys the splines. If its worn its an engine out job and split the crankcases to replace it,always ,always keep the chain a bit looser than on a normal bike.Check out this website in the UK for all info you need on the africa...its a great site and some one will always help you out with answers to any questions. www.xrv.org.uk You don,t have salt on the roads here like the UK so you won,t have the problem of wheels and brake calipers rotting. My major problem is spares, almost all my stuff comes from europe second hand or new and postage is the killer, but there is a good honda dealer in the north island that is supposed to be helpful( casbolts here in chch suck)....It is a terrific all round bike for touring and off road but tall and heavy but for the price you should snap it up.It is honda quality without the price of a beemer or ktm....good luck and go for it as you will not be disappointed

Hi all. Im new on here as from today, and couldnt help adding my 2 cents worth on Africa Twins. I bought my twin in the UK and shipped it here, great country for them, cant believe they never sold them here from new. Anyway the fixes mentioned by Pom are all worth doing and having a spare regulator is a good idea. The facet you can get from Aeroplane parts companies, maybe easier than from the UK and cheaper. Mine came from USA at about $50 NZD. Had this one for 3 years and loving it... but may be looking to sell as I have to buy a house.
Its just a thought at the moment but just wondering if there is anyone looking for one. Is there a for sale part to this site, any rules about selling things on here?
Cheers guys.

If anyone is looking for an @ then talk XRVrider into selling you his RD04, they are way better than the newer RD07, I owned the RD04 and a mate bought a RD07 and there's is alot of reasons to get the earlier one.

Seems a little strange coming from a KLR rider :bleh: A KTM 9X0 is only about 20kgs heavier. I recon a bike being too heavy is over rated given my experiences with a porky 220+kg XTZ750. I guess it helps if you are 6'2" and about 110kgs. A 9X0 is the lightest twin I know of, in addition it carries it weight really well.
A key difference I've found between the XTZ750 and the DR650 (and the main reason I wanted a twin) is the twin will happily pull up a hill at 1800rpm in first i.e. they are a lot more forgiving. The fact that it will do this and then do 80kph in first gear kinda gives you an idea of how flexible the XTZ750 is. The DR was hooking into 3rd at 80 and would flame out in rough stuff at a higher speed (at the slow speed end of the scale). A light weight twin would be nicer to ride than a heavy large capacity single even if it is 20-30kgs heavier as long as you can pick the extra 20-30ks up
If I could stick a XTZ70 twin or a kawa versys 650 twin into a DR/KLX/XT ish frame with good suspension I'd do it in a flash. A kawa versys 650 twin into a KLX650 frame is very appealing idea. No idea if it would fit though. Or I only need about 60k for a Webber Rally Twin (http://www.rallytwin.com/) (Kawa EX500 twin in a custom built frame with WP/Ohlins suspenders, a 23l tank and designed to be crashable).
Seems I'm dribbling again

Any KTM 950 riders care to comment? The 950 seems to many to be a bike to aspire to- why? What is the attraction? Do many riders come back down to smaller bikes?
On KLR.net there are a large no of riders that own or have owned BMW1150 or 1200gs that either have sold their gs' or prefer to ride their klrs due to their lighter more fun chracteristics (taking into account it is a klr site & a seppo one at that)
What I'm essentially asking is, is the 950 the bike to end your days with or is it the bike of the moment?

I got rid of my 990A, bad tank range, the 640A I have is way better, more of a trail machine. I ride with a mate on a 950A, we have fun, I keep up and I have to file my fingernails each time he has to fill the tank.....I wait and wait....lol ;)

The 950 had nice linear power, lots of it (litre-class road bike levels), and felt more nimble and better suspended than my DR-Z250 weighing around 40% less (and the DR had re-valved suspension that put a stocker to shame). In many ways the 950 is an F650 Dakar killer: it's only 5% heavier with 100% more horses. It also has more of the road-biased features the F-lovers love (comfort, speed, pillion accommodation), and more of the off-road features the F doesn't have eg decent suspension.
On KLR.net there are a large no of riders that own or have owned BMW1150 or 1200gs that either have sold their gs' or prefer to ride their klrs due to their lighter more fun chracteristicsThe GSs are a long way from being a trail bike. Expert riders and those in the sales literature can throw them around well enough, but they really are big road bikes. The KLR is a big trail bike.
Riding a small bike hard is more fun than riding a big bike gently. And riding a bike you can throw around is more fun than being taken for a ride by an overpowering behemoth.

That's what I wanted to hear.
I would love to take one for a ride. I've ridden a 950 supermoto & it scared the shit out of me - well actually the corners coming up so fast scared me - the bike was very easy to ride - fast - too fast in fact as I don't think I'd be able to stay on the right side of the speed limit.
I really like the blue one at chunderbikes & surprised it's still there. There seem to be many around @ $14k mark which I didn't think was too bad considering their miles & cond. I keep thinking there must be something wrong with them if they're not getting snapped up.

Well the DR-Z is sold ... gone ... she left me... man she was a good ride.
...how many weeks / months can I last. Never been cold turkey before...got the shakes...
Will see how long it is before another @ comes along, otherwise thinking I'll look at an XR650R - seems to be a small handful around at present. Decision to be made is how much trail and true off rd I want to give up. If I pick up an @ the last thing I want to do is be dropping 200+kg and scratching / denting up the tank and fairings...but then I would need to be dressing up the pig to make her a bit more roadable...
notably the XR has similar HP & torque to the Vtwin but with 70 or so less kg. No doubt smoother power in the twin though, better for the long haul, chuck the gear on the back & sides and just f*ck off on it as opposed to poking an XR into the trails and fire breaks along the way...
XR has longer travel suspension, better power to weight might suit my solo riding better....
where's that coin; I need to flip it...

Thats pretty much the consensus as they were the best built of the lot but the RD04 is pretty dam close, by the time they got to the RD07 they were on the downwards slope to more tourer bike, the RD07 still does a good job but not quite as bullet proof as the earlier ones and lost a bit of ground clearance etc.
As for the 950-990 even tho they are heavier than the 650's etc the power makes up for the weight and no 650 is as fun on an open shingle road, they can go into some pretty interesting places but are abit more work than the lighter bikes, we had 7 950-990 go through the the back of Dunston at the BrassMonkey in the shittest conditions I've ridden in and even the dirtbike boys were surprised we got them through.

...Yamaha NEED TO MAKE THE TDM A XTZ 900!
People have been saying this for years. There were rumours of a XTZ1200 back mid last year but from intial sketches it looked more like a TDM1200

I dont disagree, a modernised XTZ with the TDM900 would be a nice bike. I'm sure yammy could do better than the BMW F800GS and for a better price.

Cheers guys.
sounds something i could be interested in.My question to you is this? What is the parts availability like.I am also considering a r100gs BMW.In my mind i can get parts for those no problem. Is that actually true tho?But back to the HOnda.Oil air filters etc.Can you get em ?Or worse.Say you need de to replace fairing /radiator etc after a little dingle???

Can only speak for the Africa Twin here. Oil filter is an easy find, all motorbike shops have them. Air filter is same as Transalp 600 (and a few other similar models of Honda) so stocked in NZ. Lots of bits from Transalp fit. CBR 600's from mid 90's has same brake calipers, and disc's or disc's can be made by Freddie's Disc's for as cheap as Europe/Japan. Seals and bearings from NZ easy. Can get everything including plastics etc... from Japan... or ebay for secondhand. I have a list somewhere of all the Honda interchangeable parts for it. Parts was something i worried about when bringing this to NZ, but had no worries so far. Rads and fairing would be alright with an off co's of the engine bars. DMC knows how well they work ;-)
If anyone is interested, the bike is on Trade Me... I stress the "or near offer", or rather make an offer if you like it. Question me through this site if you want.
Cheers

Thanks, its is about 230 kgs. Super well balanced when riding, they handle great on and off road. Its very tall too, so just a giant trailbike. If you are under 5ft 10" then just about forget it. Although Ive heard of a 5ft 6" guy riding them, on tippy toes for sure.
OK so dont laugh but I just bought an N-Zetta off trade me in bits. Thats the winter project, to restore it. Rest of cash from the @ goes towards a house deposit. Weird things happen to you when you get married :-(

Very funny. The kids part aint happened yet but I keep trying. The rest is nail on head stuff. Too right. Lucky she's a good bird, but with selling the bike I'll have to use hindsight in about 6 months for the right thoughts on her :dodge:
