...and Wellington for V8s.
Cage talk I know but bloody good motorsport all the same.
A customer of mine just e-mailed this to me, seems they're having a hard time finding people to oppose it.
" I was in the Feathers Tavern this arvo. A TV reporter from TV3 come in (surfi tiffen i think). She was trying to find business people along Featherston St who apposed the V8 st races. Apprantly the street race stuff goes to council tomorrow or something after the mayor meet officials today.
...that bloody reporter was trying to find anyone who would appose it and put them on tv tonight. "

Send her up here - I reckon if Orcland can't have it why should we let Wellington have a V8 race - I mean what contribution to the country do they do down there...it's just not fair...STOP Wellinton being better than Orcland, exercise your rights...

Too late mate. Wellington's allways been better, and besides, someone must've voted your mayor in?

The Wellington City Council’s independent survey, which polled 600 residents, found that 72 per cent were in favor, with only 14 per cent against. This was supported by the Wellington Chamber of Commerce’s membership survey, which found that 93 per cent of businesses (529) survey were supportive.

Not trying to stir up shit but I wonder if the idea would have got as much support if there hadn't been so much negative crap about the V8's in Auckland.
Don't shoot me if I'm wrong here but I seem to recall the powers that be in Wellington saying that the idea wasn't really viable when Banks was trying to get the concept of the V8's accepted in Auckland.
Don't get me wrong. I think that the V8's are bloody awesome. Went to Surfers to see them last year, it's just possible that he did all the rev heads in Wellington a bigger favour than he would like to admit.

You're sort of correct.
The council didn't believe it would be that great, the people always were in support.

Why can't we have a race here?
It's not like we haven't turned the waterfront and some of the CBD into a race track already.... 1993/4, I think it was.

Question: do any of the Aussie V8 street races operate with the V8's as the main event? Aren't they all tagged on to either F1 or CART racing?

I say go for it...
Aucks stuffed up big time in turning the last one down, and the PC brigade closed down Western Springs, what's next.
I'm in Aucks, have been for 10 years and I never fail to be amased at the depth and bredth of incompetence sometimes. If Wellwood can stand up and pull this off I hope it's a bloody good slap in the face for decision makers up here and... they MIGHT... LEARN something from it.

Adelaide runs a V8 race now that they don't have the Formula 1 event

Go the V8's I say! There seems to be a willingness to get it done down here - hopefully it works out.

I am perplexed that Wellington would host an event that couldn't pay its own way. There is some elegant sophistry going on around the "economics" of this event -- such gems as "$23 million of additional spending" which, I presume is based on a fictitious number of people coming to watch the event and spending a bogus amount of dosh on beer and hotdogs while they're here. Ratepayers, on the other hand, have to fork out for the real cost of this event -- $2.5 million a year for the next seven years! AND we still have to pay for tickets if we want to go and watch.

would be awesome if wellington get it but the general consesus from what I have heard that wherever it goes will merely be a stop gap measure before hampton downs opens as it is closer to auckland and the next best thing to the street race and pukekohe. Something to do with the coroporates apparently

Following on from this, I note that there is a public notice in the paper. Here's the gist of it.
V8 Supercars in Wellington - tell us what you think
Wellington City Council is considering a proposal to host the V8 Supercar Championship Series for seven years from April 2006.
Because the proposed race has serious implications for the city - in terms of possible disruption and its impact on ratepayers - the Council is using the special consultative procedure to consult on the proposal and wants to hear Wellingtonians views before making a decision.
According to research already done by the Council, the race contract would generate $23 million and be televised internationally. However, it would could $2.5 million - to be met by ratepayers.
Consultation starts Friday 18 March and ends Monday 18 April. A hearing will be held Tuesday 26 April with a reserve day available.
A map of the race course, the statement of proposal, and submission form are attached to this post.
Email your submissions to streetrace@wcc.govt.nz.

well if Wellington wants to have it.. then let them have it....
Auckland could have had it and brought in millions of dollars from the tourists... I guess a few in Auckland didnt want to have to travel all the way out west and then over Greenheith just to get to work over the shore....lol
when they live in the city and normaly just pop over the bridge...lol.
I mean to say whats a few more minutes on the road... heck they could take annual leave for that week and then go and watch the race... But no they had to complain.

I was as told at a track day two weeks ago that the current promoter was being given the arse and that despite what everyone has said about NZ either loosing the round or it going elsewhere that it would be at Pukekohe for the next two years, then it would probably go to Hampton Downs when that facilty is up and running

This just p*sses me off . They had no trouble with spending 300 million on the cake tin , but can't get off there arses for a RC for the street circuit. Still , I remember overhearing a council event meeting at Il Casino one night , It's amazing that we have any Wellington events at all with the way they were carrying on. :puke:
