I'm about to set off on a N & S island tour, starting & finishing in Queenstown, and I've been advised to never leave anything on the bike when up North?!
Is it really that bad? I don't even have a bike lock (just use the steering lock usually) but around Queenstown, there's not much crime of any sort....
So are there particular places I should be careful around? or never leave anything on the bike & bike locked up always?!

Best course of action everywhere - don't fool yourself that there is no crime where you live, you've just been fortunate obviously.
Unfortunately there are dishonest buggers everywhere, opportunity is their friend - so I prefer not to assist them in their thieving ways.

agreed. crime here is no worse or better than anywhere else. only leave it unsecured if you can afford to lose it. for me, thats nothing. even at places like bike rallies and gatherings, i wont leave things lose. so many riders leave their lids on the ground and jackets over the bars, makes me wonder how many get stolen by non riders. the ferry is another spot where i wont leave stuff. what wont fit in the top box gets locked onto the helmet lock [lid, jacket and gloves]
i also only use a steering lock, and thats only in certain spots. in other spots, like at work, the petrol gets turned off, kill switch off. everything i can possibly do. ive been lucky, having parked in some very dodgy areas.

Yeah it aint that bad IF your around other bikes IE a rally or the track etc but i wouldn't leave your bike parked up with the whole kid left on it, say in a supermarket carpark while ya go sight seeing thats for sure !
But hey thats what KB is bloody good for ! I cant really offer ya a bunk here, but if ya wanted to drop any kit off while ya galavant round the lower north for a few days, so ya only stuck carrying a helmet etc, ya more than welcome !
I tend to be a bit forward and walk into shops or info centers and ask if i can leave my helmet and leathers behind their counter for a few hours ! Another idea is bike shops (cause hey, they have all been there too)
But i don't know if i'd leave my bike and all the gear in a carpark and head off for a bushwalk lol
Sure there would be a few posts to follow where beds and secure lockup are offered also !

In my case, it's not thieves I need to worry about for kit or bike, it's the rubbishmen and hard refuse collectors.
