my mates dad is looking at getting an 07 ktm sxf250. is there any thing you have to look at on these bikes? do they have any problems? how easy is it to get parts for them?

Thanks in advance

i know where there's one of these, at least i think that's what it is, that will be going cheap :blink::blink::wari:
ktm are practically as popular as the japas, so dont think parts will be a problem, maybe the cost of the parts though

Had a look at one of these recently but was put off as it required more rebuilds top and bottom than the jappas, and the parts would have cost more than other 4stoke mx bikes. Does have six gears (I think) though which would help in the bush.

I've heard the total opposite.

I've heard the total opposite.

Rung round a few dealers up here and they were all saying the same things about the rebuild intervals. Also spoke to a few jap dealers who said less rebuilding required. But guess you'd probably know more as you own one.

Personally I can't comment. I've only got around 25 hours on mine.

Just the majority of posts I've read on numerous dirt bike forums rate the KTM's reliability as the best.

Even the guys at AFC Motorcycles (Kawa and KTM dealer) steered me away from a KXF towards a SXF.

I checked it for rupe at one dealer for ktm and was told around 2g at 80 hrs as the crank has to be done much more than that and your waiting on a burning fuse that burns rather quick from what i was told bottom ends dont last that much longer.
Which is also shownup in my sisters partners ktm525sm he races it and only get 10hr yes 10hr out of the bottom end before it requres a rebuild a lota money and some mods to the bottom end to take different bearings and its now good for 20hrs not a lot. been told the jappas last a lot longer in this type racing as well.

"I checked it for rupe at one dealer for ktm and was told around 2g at 80 hrs"

imo thats a stupid amount of serviceing but then guy at spectrum told me there last shop bike 250f not current one did its big end at close to 80 hours

why they dont make these bikes as a 300 with same power but better relibility/longer service intervals is beyond me

If your mates dad is getting the bike for MX get the 250SXF if thats what he wants, if he is not using the bike for MX don't would be my advice. There are better bikes for trails if thats what he wants to use it for.

Basically barty spoke to one dealer and it sounded like the bike would cost a mint to maintain, so I rang 2 more dealrs up here. They all said pistons need to be done every 40hrs, and the bottom end + top at 80hrs, and they tend to need to be done at these intervals as they don't get much more out of them:gob: (this was for trail riding too). The bike I had seen was cheap but had done 130hrs with no bottom end work they all told me if the bottom end hadn't been done it needed it asap as it was well past what it should of been, $1400 parts, $600 labour. The japs were cheaper for parts on ebuilds, and top every 80hrs, crank around 200hrs.

But never ridden one so can't comment on that although have heard positive things.

Just saying what I was told best you ring you local dealer fo more info

FWIW. In '09 250 4t shootout Australasian Dirt Bike mag noted the KTM "needed more frequent top end freshen ups than the Japanese bikes." Read the same thing in same mag about year or so before as well. Big call for a magazine to make as they are always chasing advertising dollars.

my mate has had a 2003 ktm300 since new and has never touched the bottom end, the play in the conrod is still well within spec, he does pistons every 100 hours, i was told by my dealer you can run the pistons out to 120 hrs comfortably.

Thats a different bike, and the exc 2stroke range are ment to be very solid bikes, and what you have written sounds about right.

We are talking about the 250sx-F

Haven't dropped a trailing zero, have you?

My mate's been racing his '07 525EXC in motards, street races & cross-country. It's got a motard cam etc so it's noticeably stronger than a stocker. Top-end rebuild at 150 hours, bottom end not touched yet.

Dunno about that, have my bike on 65hrs on top end atm and has no-where near the power of a newer top end. I know this as fmx ramp i usualy hit in 2nd requires 3rd. As for crank at 200... Mine went in my CRF at 40. For no reason at all. $2100 in bills, and that was with the spares kit that came with my bike, so who knows how much It would have been If I had to pay for everything.

yeah but hold on, your compareing a 525 to a 250, generally rev the 250 alot harder than a 525, the 525 is a exc and the 250 sxf. the 525 doesnt have to work as hard to get the power the 250 gets, shall we compare apples with apples instead of apples and penuts??
alot of the mataince comes down to the oil changes its gets, my husky requires oil changes at 16 hour intevals but i service at 5 hour intervals, then i know its always right. oil and filters are cheap when compared to rebuilding engines all the time!

running slipper clutch prob dont helpI woulda thought a slipper clutch would have eased the load on the engine by absorbing some shocks? Or does it allow one to get away with more brutal downshifts?

they run a workshop and service bikes think they know what they are doin. and yes slipper clutch let you change a lot harder.

i got one, but don't ask me about anything mechanical, as I just give it to the shop and pay my money. It is an excellent MX bike, looks good, rides well on open trails, I have difficulty with it on tight trails. I have got heaps of youtube footage, just click on my link below.
As I am a trail rider, in hindsight I would get an EXC, as I want a bloody electric start!. And after hours of riding your butt hurts like hell, as the seat is not designed for trail riding.
It is nice and light, about 98kg's, and keeps up with 450's, just with less torque out of the turns. And for some reason, it is a bitch to kick over when I drop it (happens a lot) haha
