I just priced up some genuine spares for a 1980s Yamaha - almost $200 for a piston and another $200 for rings. cough splutter!

Does anybody know of a cheaper source across the Tasman or any other country??

for what bike? I got some bits from OZ for a yamaha late last year, was quite well priced, and arrived quicker than a package ordered from auckland the same day.
You could try a wrecker, Ive had some reasonable prices from wreckers for pistons in good nick, that motorcycle graveyard or whatever its called

One source I can quote. Found today. There's Allan, from Collins Profile Engineering. Sunshine Ave, Hamilton. Tel 021616295. He's going to do me a set of front rotors ('95 YZF 600) for $640, as opposed to aftermarket $844, or Yami originals at $916. Apparently, he can make rotors for any bike.

Also, for Yami 600/750 owners (93-to-97). There's a shitload of interchangeable parts. Some 600 parts are cheaper than 750, and some 750 parts are cheaper than 600.

What I've found annoying with Yamaha's is you have to buy every individual item...individualy.A pricy piston, then rings, then gudgeon pin, then circlips, then little end bearing - some bikes you can get a piston kit that covers all that for less than an OE piston. No gasket kits - you have to go through the parts book listing every gasket and o ring you require. Two A4 sheets of parts to rebuild an engine.

If the model of bike was sold in the USA then thats the place....

Ed's Honda in Boston were very kind to me for the FZR400 bits. 1/3 the price of the local supplier for most stuff including shipping but the exchange rates gorn pffft since then...

Still have a contact some place???

For pistons, give tonyB a PM.
