Brown had denied the two charges but changed her pleas to guilty in January. She was remanded on bail only because she is the sole caregiver of her two children and is looking after her partner's children while he is in jail, Rotorua's Daily Post reported.

Winner.

See, this is the problem. The PC police have driven this country so far off the sane track, this thing is able to accure 8 Drink Driving Charges and 15 Driving while Disqualified.

In a just world, this thing would be sterilised and chucked in the slammer for good.

What were the arguments against the 3 strikes policy again??

I don't mean this to sound as "1984" as it might, but here goes:

She is obviously sick. There is something wrong with her.

Jail won't fix her, but we do need to protect ourselves from her. (Yes, Jail will temporarily keep her away from us.)

What we need is a place something in-between a Jail and an Asylum, where people like her can be sent for re-education. To learn how to be (or pretend to be) decent members of society, who don't do things like repeat drink driving. To learn more about responsibility instead of just "rights".

People would be made to go there (but perhaps given weekends off or something, like a minimum security prison or something) but more emphasis on (re)education.

If they can't learn - then lock 'em up for good. We shouldn't have to put up with them.

She has had ample opportunity to learn, if she hasn't learnt by now, do you honestly think anything you can do will change that?

How many chances is enough before you reach your "lock em up" point?
Or should someone die first? Just one or two - or more?

Without any sort of social conscience the answer is simple, put them in a place where they wont cost society emotionally or financially.

But with a social conscience how do you remove barbarians from society without barbarism itself?

I can't balance that equation... Really wish i could! I pay enough tax to keep morons like this pissed and dangerous all year around.

I'm actually pretty much all for the "rope solution" some people herein have already suggested - but that just isn't going to happen no matter how many anonymous internet forum posters suggest it.

What I'm suggesting is sort of like Jail, but with electroshock therapy or something added to try to wake these people up and stop them doing it all again when they are let out.

....where people like her can be sent for re-education.

Several thoughts here

- Is re-education a cure for sickness?
- Not everyone who has a different value set to you is sick.

I expect that she just doesn't give a flying f**k about this
......... because the consequences from the previous 8 convictions have never reached her personal value / grief threshold.

So I fully support the calls for consequences for her that would reach her threshold. Then she wouldn't do it.

Then there is the very small percentage of actually people that need appropriate support. Buggered if I know how you'd tell the differences for this particular POS when there are no REAL consequences.

shes' at home looking after the kids while her partner is in jail...

well, personally to me that is no excuse. She should also be locked up from society. And the fact that she has kids but couldn't be a suitable role model for her children, then the kids can go to prison with her.

because at the end of the day we have a 'criminal-generation' being brought up in this instance only to be unleashed on the community in a few years to come and it is the community who pays for not only property damage but also the psycological cost, injury cost etc.
the father couldn't be a role model and neither can the mother, lock the entire family up! STOP THE P.C! LEARN PERSONAL AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

I would rather pay for prisons than the continuous cost to victims and their families were the perpetraters have no remorse, no way of financial retribution, legal aid, counselling, a whole range of 'programmes' etc.

For those here who would kill someone for repeat drink driving (which offence I agree is truly reprehensible - hell, once is enough, and there should be Real Consequences), please tell me: what other offences would get the rope/bullet in your ideal NZ?

People like this woman are very hard to treat. They are indeed ill, with a disease called alcoholism. However, something must be done to protect society from people like her, and I think jail should have been an option far earlier in this case. OK she has kids, but maybe it's time to bring in CYFS in this case. Yes, all of this costs money - but what else can reasonably be done?

Yes and they fail to send 95% of repeat drink drivers for alcohol assesment, we know this for a fact!
In 52% of cases its not till the 4th or 5th offense that they are assessed.
We fail to treat and we fail to protect innocent road users.
There are a myriad of solutions, it will not take just the one!

Depends which 'the one' solution is on offer...and Im NOT talking about the rope solution. I dont believe there can only be one, becuse the causes are so varied.

For a start using commonsense would prove effective.
If we recycle them back onto the roads after a one year ban, that is not effective, pair that with inadequate sentencing, and while at it we fail to treat the associated problem, that is not effective.
So we know what we're not doing.
There are some adequate laws, but we don't even back that up, we fail to follow through.:spanking:

Don't kill them, we do have a chance to make them learn. Pop them in a cell for three weeks with the absolute minimum of food and water and torture the living hell out of them every day. If they get caught again, triple the length of the punishment. If they get caught yet again, they will never learn, and it is time for a bullet.

Easy.

This is why i am not a politician; resolution is harder than it would seem....

I reckon the problem is the lack of consequence (mentioned earlier) and the lack of empathy.

If people aren't going to be punished or they don't care then how do you stop them?

I have heard someone say "well, i haven't got a licence, a rego, a warrant and i am a little pissed so my only way out is to try and outrun them when the lights go on"

With a confused look i responded "take a taxi" and they said (with an equally confused look) "i can't afford a taxi because i am paying $200 a payday to fines"

At that point i decided it wasn't worth while arguing, some are beyond education, so i increase my following distance and make sure i ain't close to other vehicles.

Short of putting on a cape and running around all vigilante what can i do? I am not happy about it tho :(

But I want you to know that my husband and our two friends deaths, and the drink drivers death, plus 2 minor injuries and one major injuriy - cost YOU, the taxpayer in Monetry terms just over 13 mill (confirmed by MOT..as an "unreported figure")
