Welcome aboard!
best advice I can give you off the bat - get out to a few events and meet the real people, and if you're new to riding, do a track day or two.
Oh - and don't take any of the abuse too personally.
Have fun :niceone:

most shops do good deals on a complete set, I got a set of cordura jacket, pants, gloves and boots for $550 when I 1st started biking, about 4 (I think) years ago.
or www.qmoto.co.nz is run by a regular here and has excellent gear at a lower price than the big names like alpinestars, dainese etc.
Don't buy a 2nd-hand helmet as you don't know if it's been dropped before.
Just looked, and nutz. this is a good price!

Don't think a cbr250rr (good bike that it is) would post an amazing 1/4 mile. 14 - 15secs maybe?
But that's not what bikes are about... Any monkey (well almost) can twist a throttle and hang on. Bikes are about corners and flowing with the bends (thus my nick) on an open road, almost nothing between you and the surroundings...
Don't get me wrong, all else being equal, a stock litre sportbike would eat up a stock skyline gtr for breakfast over 1/4 mile, but that's missing the point abit, to my mind...

Welcome to KB and riding bikes Genevieve.
Part of the attraction of riding is the challenge to ever improve your skills , the freedom and the danger (yes you are pretty vulnerable). Don't be too hung up on straight line acceleration , 250cc are the max for learners for a reason. They are light, easier to handle and reasonably powered ,but will not have the blistering acceleration of the bigger bore sportsbikes.
There are a lot of good tips for noobies on KB,especialy on the survival skills forum. Also depending where you are there are rider training nights and mentors. Ride Right Ride Safe and other more formal training events are also very recommended.Go on group rides and just generally ride whenever you can as practice makes perfect.Trackdays are fun to once you have had a bit of practice.
Get yourself some good protective gear as sliding down the road when you have an off is like pressing your various body parts against a belt sander(i.e. painful and not pretty).Leathers protect better but are not totally waterproof but you can wear a waterproof oversuite.
Assume everbody else on the road is an idiot and that you are invisible to them.Well if you haven't dozed off yet:laugh: remember the most important rules: have fun and take care.

Staying under 20kmh whilst lane spilting is fine...

Don't lane split above 20kph? Hrmmm.... I think don't lane split with more than a 20kph differential between you and cars. Lane-splitting at 20kph or less is VERY slow! Sure, if the cars are stationary, but if they're going 15kph I wouldn't split at 20, more cars will pull in front of ya!

Why are you expecting sexist abuse? Not every guy thinks that females are useless drivers (car/bike) Infact as long as none of my female friends hear this I do know some females that drive better then me. Don't like to admit it as I am reasonably good but they can multitask better then I can.

Yes it is definately to do with an ignition but that's as much as i've worked out. :(
I guess I have to improve somehow...but I won't be 'pulling' and dudes- already got the perfect one :)

I would assume it's telling the ignition module when the 1st cylinder is reaching top dead center. I am also assuming it's an optical trigger
the mc22's are lovely, my sack of crap feels like a trail bike after sitting in one [i think it feels like I sit in an mc22 not on it]

As soon as you're comfortable with open road riding you totally should
Group 4 at MotoTT is very mellow pace wise. If you can get around a 40km signposted corner you can get around the tightest corner at Taupo no worries. And honestly no-one minds what pace you go in group 4.
If you're insured with Star or Swann (ideally via Kiwibike brokers) you'll can be covered should the worst happen.

Genevieve, do get along to a MotoTT (http://www.motott.co.nz/) day. It's far safer than riding on the road, and you'll be out there with other people riding at your own pace, with tutors circulating to show you lines and analyse your riding with you after each session.
It's amazing how riding on the track improves confidence and skill. All the other KB girls who've tried it will agree on that point, I'm sure.

For once I actually agree with jrandom, although I haven't (yet) been to a MotoTT trackday, if you want to build some on-bike-confidence you really should get yourself to a trackday, you get tuition and stretch your bikes legs without being in too much danger (ie, no cars or manhole covers etc to worry about). Just be mindful that riding on a track and on the roads are quite different (but I'm sure you already know this, you seem like a smart cookie), but great for building confidence and getting a speed fix!! Get into it!!:niceone:

About 3 years of road riding, so not too long in many peoples eyes. Did a wee bit of off road on the farm though. My first bike was a honda nxr125 and about 5 months ago I upgraded from that to my zx6rr. Best thing I ever did, beautiful machine too:love:

Although if she did more open road riding, I'd probably change my mind.

Cars don't look for the L-plate to intimidated you, more along the lines of how confident you are on the road and how you command the space that you are in... ie own the road...

Yeah, attending a track day seems to be the consensus on this thread- i'm convinced :). I've done quite a bit of dirt biking on a 125cc 2 stroke (those things are rapid!!) so hopefully I can transfer those skills to a road bike. CBR250 will run low 14's all day long....
Have done a 14.3 on a mates zxr250,was first time i had ridden it....
Would run a 14.0 easy.....
Am gona take my fzr250 to the winter dragwars at meremere.....
Stock atm,but is faster than the zxr....
my fzr 250- 42rwhp..... will do a 14 flat @ low 150kmh during the day.... easy. No stock celica gt4 will run a 13.......
If i get my fzr to do low 14's stock, with a couple of teeth more on the rear and the front strapped itl run 13's..... and if i run it at night itl trap even higher...
13.8-13.9 @155 isnt unrealistic once modded.
Just my 2cents.....
