Somalia. Only costs a dollar a day to live there.
Broke by NZ standards would make you a King there.

In NZ the climate is better. fishing is still good. Ya can go pig hunting without worrying about Wolfs, Bears, snakes or very poisonous spiders.

If you're broke, surely somewhere in europe is going to be more profitable?
A bit of boot polish on your face and they'll give you a house, a car, AND if you can find a few children of varying shades, more free cash for the inconvenience.. If you get them to play hooky, they'll chuck in playstations and TVs for every bedroom.
If you pretend you can't speak english, they wont even make you look for work!!

Anywhere that the weather doesn't suck.
A sun drenched beach would be my desired place to be broke.
The miserable wind swept cold black sand surrounded by bums and gangs that is Castlecliff beach just doesn't cut it.

You're joking, right? The same Iceland that's beyond broke, and will be indebted for the rest of forever? The same one that a third of the country is trying emigrate from?
Have a read of this (http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/features/2009/04/iceland200904?printable=true¤tPage=all). (Favourite quote: “You have to understand, Iceland is no longer a country. It is a hedge fund.”)
Actually, there's a lot of similarities between NZ and Iceland.
We're the second most indebted developed country (relative to GDP) after them
Both economies are, at core, dependent on primary production industries (aside from their recent flirtation with global finance)
We're both fairly egalitarian in base culture terms
We're both little countries on the fringe of the real world economy, that many people can't find without a map
We both have geothermal potential
We both even have a large aluminium smelter
We both even have hangups about imaginary creatures - our taniwhas are their elves
We're both number-8 wire, gung-ho sorta people - or maybe we were, they still are
We both have problem drinking cultures
Let's hope we don't make the same dumb moves they have.

Have seen that in real Life, when I lived in South America the poor people were still happy and I always recond it was because of the sun and beaches
by contrast the british even if there rich are often miserable ( what that saying, whingeing poms ) they have hardly any sun and lousy Beaches
Changing my Choice to Brazil ( second of course to NZ)

I can think of better places to be broke.
But - and this is important - they are not countries in which you would ever want to get sick.

Rummage...
See: http://www.geostrategis.com/p_wellbeing.htm
There's a pop psych dictum that happiness increases with wealth only until basic needs are met. After that, happiness decreases as wealth increases.
That’s why Hulen and Co were always bleeding us dry, was just to make us ‘appy.
Anyway, if you can be fookt check the link against GDP by country.

Health
Lifestyle
Education

Having come from europe, I can say NZ is a beautiful place. Even though pay is lower the price of everything is comparatively lower. Lifestyle is amazing as in it is always warm even in winter, it is sunny most of the time *unless we have an odd bad winter* and the roads are actually nice. It is green and lush and I can get up in the morning, ride to the volcano close to my house and go....yup this pace is beautiful. Most of the people I have met have been nice too :D.
And crime is low....if you guys think crime here is high then think again.
Would I stay here when I graduate...prob not, I will want to go overseas for adventure and to work and see the world. I would definately come back here though when I want to retire.
