Paladin and I will be going thru from Upper Hutt to Paraparaumu - leaving Caltex Rimutuka at 1.30pm sharp should anyone else wants to join us. You need a permit from Wellington Regional Council to be riding in the Akatarawa Forest - I'm aiming to be back in the Hutt by 5pm - cheers Aslan :msn-wink:

Am sure you'll be able to twist mine & a few others arms to get back in the Akatarawa VERY soon! Also Odlins Road is up near there too, which I STILL haven't done!

Count me in the "old fart" brigade then! Think I'll be taking it VERY steady - can't risk a serious off on the left thumb, it's almost healed!

Have fun up on the East Cape Andy and remember it's a no motorcycle trip! :msn-wink:

Hi, I guess I was the first back but got there 20' mins late in a hurry and manage to catch the guys after the second stream crossing heading onto the pram track on the first steep part.

It was there when we could hear something that didn't seem to be another bike or a quad and was indeed not. It was a group of 4x4, first 4 10' behind 25 or so more ...

Anyway I got up to the (almost) orange hutt and head back in a hurry to get to my next commitment, all good fun in an awesome ride and nice to catch up with the guys and meet Paladin.

Had a couple of scary moments heading back at as much speed as I could (not much really fast for most) when the rear was caught on a rock and the whole bike jumped sideways a fair bit thankfully was quick enough so I didn't have time to backout of the throttle

Cheers,
Pampa

Aslan
15th March 2009, 19:33
great ride - good company - nice to have Pampa make it along - shame JMJ was unable to make it - something about securing xtra fuel - Joe we all look forward to your 'rapa ride next Sat I'm sure.

Thanks Balrog for taking Paladin and me around to the Orange Hut and out via Hydro Rd - that Hydro Road section was cool this afternoon.

As always Balrog shows his class punting the 1150GSA around - he deserves a Monteiths!

Looking fwd to the pics you took Jim - when you're ready.

Have a great week folks - Ciao Aslan :2thumbsup

PS - biggest challenge of this ride is avoiding the young bucks airborne and sideways aboard their MX machines - and the odd quad rider unwilling to give any quarter. In contrast we found the 4WD folks really courteous and considerate.

It took a while despite the fact that we live very close ... I should probably ride more ... well may be in another life ...

If u r keen to try the G650X let me know, ONLY thing is that u need to promise to keep the front down :Police:

Cheers,
Pampa

BTW thanks Aslan for organising again Karapoti is always a nice ride ... at least if u can dodge the quads and those MX that seem to like the place to become mountain bikers only .

As usual Is Balrog the only one with pix ... hope he manage to catch part of the beauty it was the bush today

Yep have to agree it was nice to have an afternoon ride for a change and how lucky we are to have that place on doorstep to do that - for free!

Thanks Aslan for organising the little "quiet tootle" - could be a fun thing to slot in every so often in an afternoon!!!! :niceone:

That sounds like a serious adrenalin rush! Not sure I have the cahunas to do it in the dark if its wet after seeing all that clay and rock though!

Stayed at the Orange hut a few months ago. Like a prison cell, but kept the rain off.

Some real good riding in there when you get off the main tracks. Need more of a dirt bike for that though.

Magic place. Me and a mate used to go in mid week, when no one else is around.

Yeah for some reason I can picture you in there tearin round on a dirt bike on little gnarly side tracks!

A magic place for sure - lookin forward to going back even if some of the steep loose downhill on the main track is a bit scary for a nana like me! :woohoo:

Not really if Balrog comes along, have u seen his HID lamps? :done:

Well there is not need of going fast, I've only done Mountain biking at dusk (almost no light) and is actually not really worst since u don't get scared of what u don't see <_<

Going back is what definitely will help u loose the scare factor of it I got much much better since first times I was in there. Last time didn't even dropped the bike and went waaay faster ... practice is the key ...

Yeah going on any track for the first time is still quite daunting for me - not knowing what's round the next corner etc etc, but mostly its just getting the courage up a bit on the loose downhill sections I need to work on! Definitely felt better the second half of yesterday when up on the pegs for most of that and giving it a bit more throttle - puts me out of my comfort zone a bit but bike seems to like that more!

pampa
16th March 2009, 12:29
Standing does work for me very well for me, the bike can kick all over the place but u don't really notice it. Even sometimes when it goes sideways I can just put a foot down while leaving the other on the peg and regain balance.

Those guidelines I posted sometimes ago do really helped me, of course it needs to be matched with practice since once u have the theory u need to learn how to apply it.

Cheers,
Pampa
