View Full Version : A "double duties" scenario

OK, here's a good hypothetical situation I'd like to find myself in soon. And I'm right in a racing discussion frame of mind right now :)

You're almost ready to casually return to the racing hobby, but your partner has also grown tired of not having a road bike.

You can only afford one decent bike and it's going to have to perform both duties. Daytime commuter, bit of a fun weekend hoon toy, and on/off race bike from time to time. Budget's not massive but you could possible afford a brand new SV650 say (which coincidentaly the missus is very partial to).

What do you do?

Buy an SV650 and transfer it to and from a pro-twins and road bike?

Grab one of the very low kay Aprillia 550 V-Twin Motards off Tardme?

Find a nice late model SV for the girl and make do with a 2 to 2.5 K, old F3 bike to get your jollies on?

Susan! If you're reading this it's purely hypothetical and for discussion purposes only!

Does she want the bike for weekend rides or commuting?

I'd say if it's a commuter then keep it separate, i.e get her the bike she wants, and make do with what you can get.

If it's just a weekend toy then perhaps try and find a setup protwins bike with road gear that can still be used on the road.

There is already one person racing F3/pro twin on a first gen SV650, think he even races with the number plate still on!

Don't get the Aprilia option unless you have the money to rebuild it frequently.

The last option is the "fairest" IMO.

Yep!!! :niceone:

Busy mums need special time out for themselves, doing whatever their passion is, fulfilling their own energy tanks, in order to look after little people's tanks!! :scooter:

She deserves a decent bike of her own!

LOL. Funnily enough, team Dalton was looking at that exact bike, however half of team Dalton decided he'd continue solo racing and left me hangin.

I like your way of thinking though mate.

Other option of course is I continue crewing for LG, and we just get a nice road bike I can go and burgle track days on.

Bloody Drew......................he did actually tell me he was scared of the 'Mo'

The amount of time those boys spend at the track you'd never even need to buy your own, shit Ed's got a slow old spare one even.

If ya promised not to crash I'd let ya out on the CBarrhhhhh, be interesting to see if it measures up.

Don't need to ride it to see that it obviously measures up mate, the way you peddle the thing it can't be too bad. Even if it is fricken Honda :)

I'd go option C! If you get a new SV you still got to do suspension, can etc ($$$) to be competitive and I wouldn't touch no spag retard... if you have to get a tard so RMZ, they are heaps of fun!!!
edit: when i say "you" i mean you two! :D

Thanks but no thanks. Nice bikes, but it's really just a Japanese man wearing an Italian suit. And we'd want something a bit more modern I think.

I guess it would come down to how well you can control your urge to want to win if ya do take it trackside mate, buy an old slug hoping you'll be happy just to be out there, or go for something like this (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Motorbikes/Sports/auction-206735067.htm), not the cheapest for a 5 year old bike to commute with but has all the kinks worked out already, and roadworthy to boot.

Tell ya what get a k2 600 or similar use it for track days commuting etc and when yer missus realises she never actually rides it anyway, go the ozzy450 route and deactivate a cylinder - dedicated f3 bike and good resale back to a 600 ;)

I think a dirty old 750 SRAD would be the ideal bike for this hyperthetical discussion. Strong as an ox motor, great grin factor and nice and easy to ride on the road.

Too old mate. I'm thinking SV650/GSXR600 might be the action and stay off the race track for a bit longer.

I'm fucking clever aye!!!

Hmmmm whilst i see your logic "o trashone" i would spin the whole thing a bit more. and find a way to get two bikes.... if the passion is strong enough, road /ahum... (sue dont read this) race bike... i dont think go hand in hand..
nowi hear you yell in the distance... YEAH WOT ABOUT THE MONEY YOU THICK CUNT" in truly trash style.... but there is the crashed bike option in tard me, for the money you could spend on a race/road bike, you could most probably get both... anyways plenty of crazy thoughts bumping around in my peanut... we'll chat...

Get a contract Jimmy .... include a rider pacage as well for development purposes of course and then the best of both worlds are available.
Or :eek5: i know a really nice CBR400 thats now for sale . Good spares and good price.

Believe me mate, I don't need a contract, these boys look after me real well and don't even give me shit when I perv at their missus'!

Now this is going to sound disrespectfull but please understand this is not my intention. After riding and racing the bikes I have been riding, I don't think a 20 year old 400 is going to suit me. I'm sure it'd be fun, but I have been very spoilt in recent years and if I'm going to race I'll want a modern steed. Shallow? You bet.

Buy a Road bike that you guys can cruise (meaning comfortable)together on (You are a team now) and buy a race bike for your jollies..You can get a real cheap F3 bike or build your own, and have fun.....That is what its all about.Something i think people loose site of...I have a mate who has a gsxr250rr and a ns250r,Both turned into race bikes.Reckons he has more "FUN" on those 2 bikes at Puke than he ever has on his Aprilia Factory on the road.(He might just be sick of looseing his licence)...But its all up to you.If your missis is happy, your happy,RIGHT???

This was sort of the dilemna I faced with my missus before we came back to NZ. She hadn't been using her bike and we sold it to liberate some cash to pay for reno's on our old dump. 'Course she missed it like hell once it was gone and we started looking at cheaper options that she could use on the road and I could use on the track.

Through a work mate of hers we bought the old' R1, an ex-race bike with all the road gear.

I can't see you being happy with an SV650 or similar, especially with stock suspension, and the race bikes seem expensive for what you are getting. Motards are fun but suck in the real world, and the higher the performance the less practical they become. (based on my experience with a Husaberg anyway) Besides, you'd have to change your moniker to Euro Trash.

Sue mightn't be too keen on the idea of a thou' but my better half found 'em no problem and she's no taller or bigger than Sue. She didn't use all the grunt but loved the handling and light weight. The K1 GSXR she originally had was a bit bulky, not heavy just physically big, but the '00 R1 she loved and the '04 R1 she test rode she liked even more but too exxy at the time.

Maybe a 600 would be a good option? Sue wouldn't find it too intimidating and you'd have a bike that in stock form would still be lots of fun on the track, where it's actually designed to be. Given your build even the stock suspension won't be a huge impediment. Fuggit, I shouldn't a said that, another 6 hundy in front of me.....aaaaargh!

I think I saw that Dave Manuell fella is selling his K3 Gix6 on trademe right now...60.4 at the Nat's just been...clearly the dude is a bit of a legend in the saddle but the bike was also rather quick. I'm sure it would keep you entertained, Jimmy...but maybe a bit highly tuned for a road bike?

Far from my cup of tea however.

Yep, even to the nationals. But he's an idiot.

Seriously, racing a road bike works out fine. You just can't crash, however, which rules out lots of people...

I'd vote for tyhe last one also.

Keep her happy is the best long term strategy, and by getting a trackbike you can afford, you reduce that fear of having to spend mega$ if you come off.

(Either on Taxi's, flowers, parts, chocolates, repairs, gifts, more flowers, and never being allowed near her bike again)
