VTR250 lack of center stand - alternatives available? [Archive]

Hello all,

Have got my second 250cc bike which just so happens to be a Honda VTR250. Love the bike so far except for the lack of a center stand! (also no Helmet holder on side)

Anyway, I need to get a center stand for this - which I think is better known as a 'swing arm stand' (?)

Have not had much luck getting places that sell this in NZ (Google and KB) - tried TradeMe but didn't get any hits on it.

So question is where did my fellow VTR riders (and others who use a 'swing-arm stand') purchase them from? and how much?

P.S. seems like there is no off switch to the headlights on the VTR250? comes on whenever I turn the ignition (I know where the switch to turn from high beam to low beam is but no off switch!) lol ;)

Shit mate - any bike shop can get you a rear swingarm stand - the only possible issue on the 250 may be that the swingarm is too narrow for the generic stands. Most are adjustable in width.

Pop onto the phone in your area - do a ring around find who has one at a decent price (around $100-$150) and ride over to try it out.

Also there is a chap trading on Trademe often who sells excellent ones for $65 plus shipping. Goes under the name of Houseofcustoms I think.

No worries - I find TM's search a bit picky - spell it wrong or without a space and you miss it. I searched for 'swingarm stand' also try 'rear stand'

OK so I have since found :

There are few different types of rear stands (they also have front stands)

Main differences seem to be that there is a 'swing arm stand' and then there is the 'spool stand'

Apparently the 'spool stand' is more sturdy but for basic maintenance standard 'swing arm' is fine. Only issue is if your wanting to run the bike while on stand, then a spool stand is recommended as it will not vibrate out of the stand!

Also need to make sure that when getting a swing arm stand that your bike has swing arm's on both sides - I suppose this applies to spool stands too (depends where the spool is mounted though?)

Useful place to view how to mount/dismount is to do a video search on youtube for "bike rear stand" or such and there will be a few vids out there...

Have attached pics of the two different stands.

Yep you are correct - it's highly unlikely your bike has spool fittings on the swingarm - these will be a threaded hole on either side, somewhere by the axle. They are often cast or welded on to the underside - the spoon screws into this. Usually its only the top end sport bikes that come with spool fittings.

I've found the L-shape supports secure enough.
