View Full Version : Useless function on my GPX 250!

Upon purchase of my EX250F many friends commented, "oh so when are you going to use it for the purpose of transport"

I was like simply, Ill bike to Uni on it :-) it kills the parking issue and I can even park outside lectures.

However upon the inaugural first Uni trip for a lecture I realised one big downfall of my GPX 250.
The factory helmet slide lock is positioned too close the the left exhaust and my helmet touches the "cooking" exhaust if I attach it. I cant really wait the half and hour or so till it cools down to attach the helmet, so I have to carry it... bugger!
I know this lock is there for a reason!
Anyone got any ideas how I can get around this? I don't think I can just have one exhaust either.

Also the expensive "forma" boots I have arent the most practical for just walking around Uni. Id love to just wear some reasonable work boots or something instead, in fitting with my jeans.

any comments or ideas?

Don't have lockers in Dunedin? Even more useful in winter when you want to stow your wet jacket somewhere.

for the boots, how about those half-boot things that are in most gear stores? I hear they aren't as good protection, but surely they have to be better than normal work boots?

Don't leave your helmet on your bike unless you want some form of excrement left in it, or chewing gum, or some other really clever and "funny joke". I've also seen the straps cut and the helmet stolen.

Don't leave your helmet on your bike.

Get a locker.

You're only meant to run on one cylinder when you want to use the helmet lock, just play with the carbs a little you'll get it.

I also used to carry it, but just got tired of it.

Now I take the rear seat off, put the clip on the strap hooking round underneath the plastic so that the strap is lying over the plastic.

Then lock the seat back on and hey presto, your helmet is locked up.

All good if you trust the decency of people not to fuck with it.
Quite a few people around my uni park do the same thing, and none of them seem to have had any worries.

I've left my helmet hanging from the GSX1400's helmet lock for many hours on end in many different places and never had it fucked with once.

All this helmet vandalism must be a Wellington thing.

This thread got me thinking about "what did I do with my helmet when I went to otago Uni?" Then I remembered that helmets weren't compulsory that long ago and sometimes I just didn't wear one. In winter when it was colder I did have a locker in the student union building. Are they still there?

As to the boots issue, even today when commuting to work, I don't wear boots. but I do wear heavy leather shoes, and my leather trousers come right down to overlap the top of those shoes.

i still have no idea how to use the helmet lock on my GPX. I can't get the D ring in past the lock as the helmet hits the bike and stops. Maybe im doing it wrong but it seems way too awkward.

the metal clippy in bit of my helmet chin strap has a hole in it. sometimes use that to lock the helmet on if i want to put gloves with it.

Haha its funny, people always look at my bike and say " get a real bike " I dunno I look at scooter riders and I say that... its just perspective really.
Also don't I need a 250 to get a learners? and restricted? I'm kinda on of those play by the rules sorta guys... so here am I playing by the rules

Nothing with a Ninja, doesn't keep up with a CBR or ZZR but who gives a shit, it was alot cheaper. Damn inflated 250 market

I actually like my bike, its good fun

just jimmy it around a bit - there used to be a particular spot it could rest with it sticking out to the side a little so that the helmet wasn't touching the exhaust. discovered it accidently :-P

As far as the boots go - I wear Diadora express road boots - short commuter ones that are comfortable as - I wear them daily for work - they're nice enough to go out in, work in, or casual with jeans. got them from motomail (www.motomail.co.nz) at 50% off about a year ago

You can buy lock top box designed for helmets and some are big enough for boots also. Most have release systems inside that mean you can remove when not needed leaving only the mounting behind. Some will fit most bikes so you can keep your investmant when you change bikes.

try putting your hand through the face of the helmet to lock the catch.

sometimes when it gets crowded i just secure it to the pillion seat through the face. if you opt for this option, don't be a lazy bastard. you have to secure it properly with a thick cable & lock so it won't fall off when someone bumps into it.
(i'm assuming that all EX250s prior 2008 have that ugly handle behind the pillion seat, that serves no useful purpose? some say it is to secure your luggage. some say it is a spoiler.)

Easy fix. Replace said bike with a gpz1100.

If you wish to ride the gpx250 then dont leave the helmet with your bike. Get a good backpack which has a helmet pouch or find a locker. Youll find helmets get damaged far too easily attached to bikes.
