Another cage electrical problem thread...

Hullo, I've got a mysterious cage electrical? problem.
When i turn the key to start the engine, the whole car just powers down and upon releasing it, takes about 2 seconds to power up again. I know that:
The starter motor and associated mechanicals are fine, the engine can be hand cranked without the plugs in, the starter relay's fine, and the battery is also good. The + wiring between the realy and the starter is also fine. What the hell?

The starter pinio gear engages, but the starter motor won't turn, seems it's not getting enough power. WHY?

ANY input would be much appreciated, as I'm at my wits' end.

The cage is a 1991 toyota mr2 auto, non turbo (3sge).

starter solenoid perhaps. test the voltage from battery to solenoid signal, then between solenoid signal wire to the starter power feed. if there is a dirty big voltage drop there you go.

are you sure the battery is just not pushing enough current?

after thought, check all connections, you may be supprised

Thanks, but nope, starter solenoid's fine and engages, when you turn the key. Measures wires and connections for resistance.

Nope, clean, also tried conecting jumper leads past the terminals.

Please explain? Had starter out, tested it, operates fine. Maybe it just operates fine when not under load.

The bearings are worn - when under load the armature contacts the field coils and stops rotating,it's a short.It's called poleing as the armature hits magnetic poles.I'm sure David Reid has a fancy explanation....but it's fucked.It needs a rebuild,or take your chances with a used one.....or pay serious money for a new one.

I had a simular problem with a 3sge, it was a series of problems.

I put in a new starter relay and the starter motor needed a new contact kit. Once I did that it was fine. Although when I test either they seemed okay by themselves.

Ah-ha that's sounding more like it. I also suspect it's a series of compounding little things. Had the starter stripped down and brushes, contacts, windings all ok. Tested the relay. I think it's time to go see an auto-sparky soon.

I agree, problem is I've connected a very healthy battery with jumper leads past the battery clamps and exactly the same thnig. Besides the connections are absolutely fine.
