Reckon he's dreaming on the price. The later model one with 50,000km less went through a dealer at 6K - which means this one should be more like 3.5K not 6.5K.

Time wiil tell, and people are definitely interested.Qué? I understood the one at thunderbike was a minter, much newer and much lower kays. If a dealer got 6, privately it would only fetch 4-ish. Then this one is older (nearly 20 years!) with 2-3 times the mileage...

I believe the ad stated that it had been offroaded a bit and had a few battlescars from this, or words to that effect. It was a 1996 so 6 years newer but still 13 years old. Had less extras and worn condition.

Its not bad but probably should be mid 5's, I wouldn't compare it to a RD07 as the RD04 is better offroad and alot of people will be looking for an RD04 over the RD07.
I sold mine for mid 5's and it had panniers, Arrow pipe and was the hard to get black one, I probably sold it too cheap as I had a bidding war going on but it went to a good home so I was happy, I can't remember how much my mate got for his newer RD07 but it wasn't a hell of alot more than my RD04.
If your buying an @ I wouldn't recommend the RD07, not that it is a bad bike as it still was way better offroad than the BMW my mate sold to get the RD07 but the RD04 feels totally different when you ride them back to back, the RD07 feels small and kind of flimsy, just a little to much road not enough offroad.
Then again you could just get a KTM and the @ will become an fond memory :msn-wink:

An 1100, 19 front vs 21 front @ wins.
Even tho they are close in weight the @ seemed to carry its weight better offroad and when it got loose the 21 was alot easier.

Fair enough, factor that in and even by my conservative maths you're talking 5-ish. 6 gives some room to negotiate.

Well, without wanting to jinx the whole deal, the bike should be here on Tuesday morning c/o Motorcycle movers.
Been bikeless too long already (haha) so it will be good to learn to ride again on the @. I will certainly be needing to change my riding style me thinks, but looking forward to a nicer ride on the road than the DR-Z offered, along with double the range and the ability to carry a bit of gear! might travel the '10 DB1K in a bit more comfort and style next year!
Think I'll miss the trail bike side of things a bit, but hey there's always plenty of DR-Z's around, not so many of these though.
Two thumbs up :niceone: to XRV Rider aka Blair for his assistance so far in bringing this bike to the mainland - thanks Blair, will keep you posted.

the bigger one's a custom - Italians are big on em and often cut the body up for a more off rd / big trailbike look.
Not sure about the screen on the little one - motor might struggle to overcome the drag. I think you could do 2-up though.

Glad the bike is going to a good home. Yep they can get off the ground, but it takes a fair ramp... never tried it before though, honest ;-) Hope you get as much pleasure out of it as I did. Favourite bike by far, and might find it hard to let go tomorrow.
It'll be really good on long trips, just keep any weight carried on the back low or you get steering wobble. These love winding roads, if there's a few bumps as well you'll leave most bikers behind. Have fun mate, all the best.

Well she's here and parked up in the garage...after two test rides in as many hours. Whoppin big bike compared to what I used to ride. The weight I felt making it want to oversteer. Slight adjustment of the bars for a bit more height and forward positioning puts her a bit more like I'm used to. Bit of a vibration going through 4-4.5k rpm, but shed loads of pull and stable as hell on the road. New tyres on the cards to survive winter tho and help hold it upright!
Ride and farkling reports to follow!

Good stuff Buggs , you will most definately need bar risers to get a comfortable standing position ,I rolled mine as far foreward as possible and its about right for me .
Oh and if it doesnt have already ,shout it some 10w fork oil (cheapest and most effective mod available)
buggsubique
2nd April 2009, 18:52
Well here she is, in all her early 90's colours, ha.
It's taken a bit of getting used to like I said, but I think I cracked it tonight when I took her off road in one my the local river beds (with bald road tyres, yikes).
Kinda a bit twitchy to start with, but often speed helps smooth out the bumps so fang it I did and she really came alive. Very responsive to the wrist, suspension plush enough to take the small drop offs and ruts (will put 10W in the front end though). So yeah, short answer was "ride it like a trailbike"....albeit a 220kg one.
Picked up zeRax and went for a spin 2up, piece of cake.
Required mods as time and $ allow:
-replace fork oil
-new gravel biased tyres
-new shock boots
-75 to 100w bulbs if I can find the right replacements or custom up a standard set. (who the f*ck specifies 35W bulbs up front!?!?? esp with the 360W alt)
-new bar risers and alloy high rise bar
-cut windscreen down (currently throws it straight into your face, v noisy).
-fault check / replace temp guage
-refoam & recover seat
Ideal mods down the track
-remove all stock fairings and plastics, slim & trim it all down with aluminium side plates and rear fender (need to relocate coolant overflow tank)
-remove front fairing and all its claggage and rewire to a trailtech vapor & dash.
-custom dual headlights, cutdown plastic front fender onto lower clamp
-Swap out stock tank for smaller XLV tank, custom fab rad shrouds / braces.
Keep all the stock stuff, but basically trim the fat off the girl.
So yeah, bugger I won't be around for the twin peaks this sat, but hopefully get over Nelsin way soon for a decent haul!
Cheers, B

You might surprise yourself. The twins are really nice for climbing hills - the power delivery is so smooth and they will pull from so low in the rev range that you can travel slower and more controlled that the DRZ400 and then give it heaps when needed i.e. 70ish kph in first. Only problem is that when it does go wrong they take a bit of lifting.
Congratulations on picking up a twin :niceone:

'pends on the bike I spose, but I would have thought that'd be top dollar right there! Prolly won't get a similar bike that cheap to be fair, but yeah at a pluck mid-high sixes perhaps?
Still, this forum has probably just caused an inflationary effect over the last 6-8 weeks!
But... you'd be pissed off knowing this bike went for (presumably) around the $5750 is was advertised for only to be relisted a month later for 1/3 the price again! or a GP of just under 25%. If it was shipped by motorcycle movers say take $400 (generous) out of that to give a net of (arguably so lets just say) 20% or $1500 to the clever bike trader.

going by the specs (Haynes, not Wiki!), the later models were about 4-5kg lighter, so I don't know where this "less offroadable" thing comes from. Maybe just that they look more roady and less "dakary"?

29th April 2009, 21:23
From memory like a lot of bikes it got heavier and ...Just watch you don't 'ride the spec sheet' with those kind of comments, the specs aren't gospel. Eg Triumph wanted the new 1999 Tiger 885i to appear lighter than the model it replaced. Unfortunately they'd told porkies on the spec sheet by the time the original model made it to production form, so the later year bikes although unchanged had a weight increase on the specs, just so the new 885i's reduced weight would come in under that.
Quoted weights used to have no basis in reality, particularly from the Japs. These days everyone is much better.
Even so, 4-5kg on a 200kg bike is not significant.

Even so, 4-5kg on a 200kg bike is not significant.
Very true. Often the bikers are less concerned with 4-5 kg's excess weight on themselves, but justify spending big bucks on a new exhaust to save 4-5kg on the bike's weight.
