Well, seeing as I am looking for a new bike, and Ant recently decided we needed a $3200 home theatre system, and xbox, a few games, a new laptop, new printer, computer upgrades (the list rolls ever hair-raisingly on), I thought it was about time I ejimicated myself as to what insurance policies were and what a good one looked like/if they were worth while.
Being a complete noob on this subject, I was hoping a few of you seasoned people out there could tell me about insurance policies, whether or not to get one, for what things its worthwhile, and where to find a good one...that sort of thing.
All help appreciated! :2thumbsup

Bike, or home contents?
Home contents is easy.
Record all the serial numbers of all your stuff, and have proof of ownership. If possible.
Figure out what the maximum total cost of replacement would be if someone dropped a nuclear bomb on top of it. Get a home contents policy for that much.
I, for instance, just have a round $50K figure (I think...) and pay about $50 a month for that with AA Insurance. Covers theft, fire damage, leaving my cellphone on top of a car and driving off (which I recently claimed on), etc, etc. All good.
But, really, just call around the insurance companies, ask them to describe their policies, get quotes. You'll find out everything you need to know that way.
And if you're wondering about bike insurance, just do a site search - heaps of stuff here already on that topic.

Well, I'll tell you something for free its bloody hard to get cheap - my AMP policy was $80 a month - and it didnt cover theift from outside my alarmed locked chain garage.
I think the best place to go would be a national riders club I dont have any numbers on hand, but I know that it is a bit hard to get it cheap - just make sure you read the fine print (i.e make sure the theift part of the policy allows for theift outside of the garage), I'm currently with protecta, but they are expensive and it is only because I had to get the bike on HP.
Your access will sadly be around 900$-$1200 and if you have had a crash/claim then it can be upto $1500, so you do havto think hard about if its worth insuring a 2000$ bike when the access for example is 900$ and your paying 1000$ a year for insurance, when you can get third party insurance for less and save yourself some worry.
So best bet goto a riders club they should sort you out, make sure you know exactly what it covers, and make sure about the acess - because they are normally over the roof for 18yo's :(.
make sure that ant gets you onto a bike, but he has needs to.. (of the triumpth speed triple ad).
(wow what rambling crap)
BTW AMP LICK ****.
This was for the bike part of the question JRANDOM got the contents.

If you click on the search thingy at the top, click on it, and type "Insurance" into the little field that pops up you'll get everything from solid advice on on how to approach the Insurance industry in general, to how many genes the average Insurance company counter worker's parents were missing.
Have a lovely evening.

Hi John....
You ready to go riding yet???
It's time I got my @55 over that side...... and meet that chic Roxanne and you and Ant and Jess ........ will try to drag some of these JAFA's along too.....
Hopefully I should sort the insurance out by then too......
Am trying to get my cars and bike and house and garbage all transferred to one company.......
It would help if I tried contacting the companies but I always seem to forget......
maybe after I crash......

I have house, contents, car and motorcycle all with AMI..seem to be about the cheapest, and I have two mates who are panelbeaters, they swear by either AMI or Tower for paying out with cars..and they both say State are the biggest bunch of dung punchers to deal with.
I had a "visit" last year to my garage one night while I was at work trying to earn an honest dollar, and my newish lawnmower, socket set, power tools and waterblaster were knicked..AMI paid out but unfortunately only around half the value..so now I have digital pics of everything valuable for proof of ownership etc.
Only my two cents worth, but AMI are cheap, friendly and have a good reputation..
Good luck!!

Good luck!!Have had AMI on a bike. They sucked. Farmers' Mutaul was the cheapest (had them with the VFR750), but still not much help with a bike. I have gone to Vero through HRCNZ as I wanted affordible Insurance will someone who understands bikes. If I could afford it I would use Protecta as they would do a better pay-out. But with you and Ant both under 25 and both still with learners (come on Ant get your arse into gear, your near full licience ready:kick: ) you excess with the insurance is going to be over 1/2 what you pressent bike is worth. With vehicles under $3000, I would only go 3rd party as there won't be much left after the excess is gone.

I've got a honda CG110, bored out to 125.
Is it alright to not have insurance on this? I figured that I probably may not do too much damage to some cunt if I crash into him, and then If I crash off the road it's my own fault anyway?
I always have insurance on cars, but is it silly to not have it on a bike?

Depends how much you think a replacement grill for a Benz or BMW might cost. Or a wing mirror. In fact I'd guess that a wing mirror off a late BMW 540 would be worth a LOT more than the CG110. At least get third party. I really get annoyed with people who have no insurance because, sure I can claim on mine, but I lose my no claims bonus and excess if they can't recover it from the (expletive deleted) with no insurance.

Re contents insurance. I would recommend AAI because they have a $100 excess on everything and they pay out replacement on anything. IE 15 year old 40" TV gets a new 40" inch abeit it will be a cheap one but a new 40" tv is going to be sweet. Also the premiums are not too bad.I was paying $30 a month for 20k of stuff
Remember alot of policies have specified limits. eg $1000 per item of jewelery and $3000 for an 'event' just make sure you get a hold of a policy booklet and actually read it because so meany people dont and get shocked when they find out otherwise.
they dont do a great multiple policy scheme at the moment but are rumoured to be bringing that in a couple months.
I highly recommend against Tower, I dont want to go into too many details but basically some events of late have caused some customer service issues.
If arent lazy, call up 4, AMI, State, AAI, and maybe NZI (state and NZI are owned by IAG but have different policies) ask for a quote and a policy booklet. have a look through and you will notice some subtle but big differences. eg the IAG group only pay indemnity on alot of things after a certain age.
and finally, this is only a theory but. State claim to pay on 98% of claims. thats great except its known that 10% of claims are fraudulent in someway (inflation to just pure lying) if nearly 100% of claims are paid then the money needs to be coming out of its customers premiums.
Hope that helps but PM me for more info.
Cheers
Id recommend National Auto for a bike cos they are so freaking cheap. (IE 22yr old on learners and first bike, Full Insurance is $300 annually)

We've got contents with AMI and have a total replacement policy. Only it isn't. Total replacement on WHITEWARE only. Camera died recently and I found this out... :angry2:

Yeah thats a good point, especially with the CG brakes.... I'll get some insurance then, it'll probably be only like $50 a year or somthing silly.

IIRC I pay $60/year for third party through State. Hard not to justify.
