Got an odd problem...
My cat has a substance abuse problem. She loves bleach. Whenever I clean the bathroom she's right in there, meows and rolls in it. Rubs her face against all the walls and just generally hangs out in there enjoying the fumes...
I'm worried for her health. I've tried locking the doors to the bathroom and toilet after they are cleaned but she just sits by the door whining and then runs in as soon as someone goes in !
When she is 'high' she acts really strange, very affectionate and rubs up against everyone meowing. Sometimes to the point of playful nibbles. She cannot stay still and is quite 'frisky' for about an hour afterwards.
Shes about 5 years old - a pedigree Manx cat from the Isle of Man "Mr Bigglesworth".
Is there any way of getting my cat off drugs ? :doctor:

You could stop cleaning your bathroom.
Not too sure if there`s B.A(bleach anonymous)near you for cats.

You just need to wean her off the bleach and onto catnip....try cannibis if you are uncomfortable asking for catnip at your local vet.

Holy hell, I thought Maestro my Siamese was nuts but your mate takes the biscuit. Are you sure it's bleach....? One white powder looks much like another......?
She's somehow come to associate the smell with pleasure. Perhaps there are activities in your household involving bleach, catfood, oils, whips, chains, furry restraints......:doctor: we don't need to know.....
I'm worried this could escalate - no sign of her using her claws to dip into the bleach and then mainline into her leg yet......?? :doobey: Try cleaning with beer - a wonderful substance containing ethyl alcohol which dissolves dirt and grime, with the added smell of yeast. Much safer for puss - and she won't be able to open the bottles. :niceone:

You're a dude and you clean your bathroom?
Fuck the cat, there's a far more serious issue here.
Our cats enjoy catnip. My mother-in-law has an 'old' herb book that says catnip was dried and smoked before people discovered maurajuana. Apparently it has hallucinogenic effects.
Tried planting some outside once, had every mother-fucking cat in the neighbourhood visit. Plants never had a chance:no:. Kept some in pots in the garage for awhile and pulled a leaf off now & then for the cats to munch on. It's fun seeing your cat run round the room about 3 feet up the walls!

LOL I love some of the answers so far!
Now I'm going to be a spoilsport and take a serious approach. :oi-grr:
First things first: Is it likely to be harmful? Most household bleaches are chlorine based (sodium hypochlorite). They can irritate the lungs and mucous membranes but are unlikely to do much damage in the smallish quantities likely to be inhaled by your cat so you might not need to worry at all.
If her behaviour still bothers you, take a look at the other ingredients in your bleach. It might actually be a perfume or other ingredient that attracts her, so using a plain, unperfumed chlorine bleach may solve the problem (the 'Basics' brand is a good one).
If it is the chlorine she's attracted to, then change to a non-chlorine bleach. A lot of the 'eco-friendly' brands are oxygen bleaches (hydrogen peroxide or sodium percarbonate).
OR go the old-fashioned way and use sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and vinegar to clean your bathroom!

There is a workaround for this, which I discovered after having the same experience as yourself munster. Cats seem to attack the plants more when they are young. My first plantings were annihilated in about two days flat. When I replanted I put wire netting over the small plants. Once they grew big I took the netting off and the plants survived for years. The cats seemed less interested once the plants grew bigger as well...

Put a bowl of bleach out for the cat. Its a sure fire kill or cure approach.

My pussy has a thing for styrofoam & (smelly shirts too, grot). First discovered in the xmas of 1999. Cheap decorations began to go missing. Advanced to foam cups & packing foam. He doesn't eat it, just shreads it, then walks away. He has been known to steal & hid bits. Our Main Coon 'Bonaparte' ate bees as a kitten & our last boy loved chilli salsa sauce.

I thought my cat was weird but this is odd ... googled the topic seems a few cats react to it in the same way ... one of the few answers to the question was that it smells like something in their urine that is linked territory marking and shagging ?#@! Maybe the person who gave that answer was taking the piss but it has some logic to it.

Interesting. Perhaps the product contains ammonia? I'm interested to know the ingredients...

Or he could simply tell us all that he has got us! One pic of grey/black cat lying on the floor, one pic of grey/black cat in full sun and overexposed so it looks as if the cat has been rolling in bleach. :sunny:

I certainly considered that option, but that's the boring answer. It would be much more interesting if it's true.
Anyway, it's not often you get to discuss the difference between oxygen and chlorine bleach so I wasn't going to pass that up!

Be careful. That didn't work out so well for this guy (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2009/03/02/national/a125932S34.DTL&tsp=1).
Nebraska Man Says He Put Cat in Bong 3 Times
A man who stuffed his girlfriend's cat into a makeshift bong and smoked marijuana through it said Tuesday that he had done it on other occasions and that it calmed the cat down.
Acea Schomaker of Lincoln said he never intended to hurt the 6-month-old cat, Shadow.
Lancaster County sheriff's deputies responding to a domestic disturbance at the residence ticketed the 20-year-old Schomaker on suspicion of misdemeanor animal cruelty Sunday after catching him smoking marijuana from a boxlike contraption that had the cat stuffed inside its 12-inch by 6-inch base.
Schomaker's girlfriend, Marissa Vieux, also was ticketed for animal cruelty because she didn't try to stop Schomaker, Sgt. Andy Stebbing said.
Vieux, 22, said she took in the cat about two months ago from friends who abused it.
Schomaker said the cat would bite and scratch them but he didn't want to discipline it by swatting or squirting water at it. He said they didn't bring it to an animal shelter because they feared it would be put down.
So Schomaker said he decided to use the makeshift bong because he had heard about people calming their pets by blowing marijuana smoke in their faces.
"I know for sure this isn't the first time someone has done this," he said. "I'm just the first one to get caught."
He said he put the cat in the bong a total of three times and it seemed to calm the cat.
"Every time we took her out she would pretty much just lay down and proceed to clean herself and act like a stoned person," Schomaker said.
The bong had a foot-long piece of garden hose coming out of a Plexiglas box, with the top secured with duct tape. Schomaker said it was constructed in such a way that the cat did not get immersed in smoke to the extent some might believe.
Schomaker said law enforcement and animal specialists lectured him about why what he did was cruel, and that he learned from his mistake.

Dear Dan
Until your cat really accepts her problem there is nothing you can do to make her quit th' drugs.
She will then have to do a 12 step program (you know apologise to all the mice who's loved ones she ate, etc.)
And go on a catnip treatment course.
She will always be a recovering bleachaholic

I think 'they' like to call it a 24 step program. I've heard in the States they have an intervention style program. You get all kitty's neighbourhood friends around to eat smelly fish pate, lick each others privates & catfight :girlfight:.
Puss gets a little charm to hang off the collar for each step.
I'm not sure what a plucebo for smelly underwear fetish would be. :eek5: :)
