There. I fucken said it.
Sue hates it, not keen to listen at all, especially in the car. I should clarify, I'm quite choosey.
For example, i fucken LOVE the "Bring the Noise" remix between Anthrax and Public Enemy. Pure noise-ical Porn. I'm also a huge fan of R.A.T.M, Battle of Los Angelas. Sue likes Rage, but will not listen to that album.
So I'm probably your steriotypical white Rap fan.
I will listen to:
Eminem (Who by the way was voted all time best rapper BY HIS PEERS)
Body Count
Rage, Limp Bizkit, Kid Rock (all those metal rappers)
Beastie Boys.
SO. Do I like Rap or am I just some try hard white boy wanting to look tough.
By the way, the Rob Van Winkle/Blood Hound Gang duet is fucken cool.

Thats not some of the most cleverly "penned" shit I've ever read.
Overly cynical, simple themes with a few harsh (fuck this motherfucker that...) lazy language, hardly clever, and misplaced words people only use when trying to sound smart.
Btw don't try to say I haven't looked into it, I went through a faze when I listened religiously to anything from 2pac to 50cent

Sorry if I sounded negative, I'm somewhat of a Rapophobe.
It's pretty much the only music I will not listen to lol. Actually, some stuff like Kanye West -Heartless or other "hip hop" with interesting styles to them or techno twists are alright (not that I would listen to it a lot), but its the macho crap or flat out annoying shit like that new savage song that pisses me off

Difference of opinon then. I can dig that.
"White America" doesn't strike a chord? Personally, I think it hits the nail on the head. I see a tale of struggle in alot of the lyrics. Granted, 20, 30 years ago there was no place for such profanity in songs but what have you got to do to get peoples attention now? I listen to Led Zep and Jimi Hendrix to wind down and chill out now, but forty years ago, these guys were the anti-establishment groups grabbing attention with their controversial lyrics. And before them? The Beatles. And then? Elvis Presley.

It's not really the language, its just a lot of little things (mainly the whole gayster style that originated because of it), and everything else I described is in most music scenes any way so I'll give you that. I do think that comparing Led and Hendrix to an over rated loud mouth with mommy issues who was only popular due to an abundance of extremely bored middle class white american's desperate to rebel and conform at the same time, is not quite right.
But hey, I'm just pissy I've gone from having 3 bikes to 1 in under a week :[

Sorry, as previously stated I'm (very) white and as such can probably not comment with great authority.
That being said, I'm confident in claiming that MC Hammer is FAR from a significant Rap artist. For chists sake, Anthrax ( a Heavy Metal band) were recording Rap songs many years befor MC fucking Hammer was released from his six PM curfew.
In my (very) humble opinion, he was a "pop" rapper. Exactly the same as what Poison or G 'n' R are to metal.

And with the exception of Public Enemy, all of the rap bands you mention are white trash rap.
A bit different from the other type, which is what most people think of when they think rap.
And agree with you on Eminem, who's one hell of a poet. Compare him with the likes of Sam Hunt, or even Tom Waits - there's a startling similarity.

(C)rap isn't even music.. it's just dumb eejits chanting. Reminds me of seeing the protesting blacks in south africa on the news in the 80s.. jumping up and down whooping. They can't even put their IQ reducing hats on straight.
Someone said about what do you have to do to be noticed?? How about write something that people want to listen to for pleasure, rather than to annoy others?
Bruce Willis got it right in The Last Boy Scout. When the fat bloke said I'm going to kill you slowly, Bruce retorted with Play some rap.... Spot on son, spot on..
Is there anyone that doesn't shout COCK at the cars driving by with their rap music playing too loud?? I can't be the only one. And it's always rap. You don't hear anyone with Kylie playing too loud to annoy everyone else, do you?

As we all know, there is a strong correlation between generation / age and musical taste. Language has become much "simpler" over the last 400 years. Since Shakespeare, things you could argue have gone downhill. We use far less words to express far more emotions. Having said that, it is amazing that a word like fuck can be used with vocal expression to mean so much more.
I'm not a fan of most rap, but the lyricists are generally clever. the best rappers have multiple themes in their lyrics. A great rapper is someone who leaves you with different impressions / thoughts on different listenings. I prefer good rap to the people in these new hard rock bands that just scream into the microphone.
I think the next big thing will be snuff metal - where bands will hold sacrifices whilst gargling blood.

Everything about One rocks, even the vid. You want something that is incredible with a video that really freaks you out try doing some research on Disturbed - Inside the Fire and watch the vid. Powerful and scary at the same time.

SO. Do I like Rap or am I just some try hard white boy wanting to look tough.
Is a baseball cap a predominant feature of your wardrobe (not just between races)?
Do you ride a 'busa with an extended swingarm?
I suspect you just like rap then. To each his own, but I will grant that some of it has real merit. Or I dunno if this is where you got to distinguish between rap and hip-hop (or whatever they call it these days) - because some rapping is really awesome. It's the crappy music, all the fucking bling, the "get rich or die trying"/pimp/gangsta/hoes/drugs elements that surrounds a lot of rap that I really despise. Rapping as a here-and-now improvised discipline (is battling the word) is really cool - but I'd liken it more to good stand-up comedy rather than music.
