Took a wee pootle yesterday am through Arapuni Road (nice road) and returned north up the west bank of the Waikato River.
Came alongside Lake Karapiro where there is major road reconstruction happening (for some months now). In front of me was a little old Honda Civic driven by a blonde, ponytailed person of apparently female persuasion...
Off to our right was the road roller working on the parking area just off the road. In the middle of where he was working was embedded, in a little pile of gravel, a waratah standard - probably marking the middle of the work section. It was about in line with the left hand edge of the road.
Civic driver decides to turn right into the parking area. I imagine she was watching the roller (good thing to avoid in a little old Civic). She blasted across the road and drove straight into the upright Waratah...BOOM! Then hastily backed up looking flustered even from the back view I had...if she had been a cat she would have been washing furiously...The roller driver was almost falling out of his cab and I just about lost the bike in the gravel I was laughing so loud...poor girl. How embarrassing!!!:rofl::clap::rofl::clap::rofl:

Gotcha!

How odd. They must have been lost???

It's a steel fence standard thingy...

What made it worse was that it was the only hazard in sight for about 100 metres... If you'd aimed at it ya probably woulda missed...:(

Thanks xwhatsit - that shows it perfectly...

I'm very familiar with them. Why?

Well, how wide is a Honda Civic? Not that wide? Well, how about compared to a bicycle?

When I was in Intermediate school I rode my nice shiny 21-speed into such a post. Smack in the middle. Ripped my toenail off

I assume the name comes from the Waratah flower - state emblem of NSW.
The flower head sits on a long stem - ?

but they are not known as Waratahs in Aus. First time I've heard it.
Star picket, star dropper, wire picket - never a Waratah.

They'd been around for fookin' ages before I heard them called that here too.

lol at the mind image of a cat furiously washing...
It cracks me up when a cat does something clumsy, and gets obviously embarrassed as hell -- especially when people laugh at them.
They try to act all nonchalant like: "Yeah, I totally meant to do that..."

It's "It's "a" not "an".", not "Its a not "an".". ;)

No, I haven't yet, but I will. I'll request it from the library. :)
There's a classic youtube vid of a cat trying to jump onto a computer printer, but lands on the paper sticking out the front, which collapses...
Hilarity ensues.
Can't embed link cos I'm at work :(

My (blonde) sister might relate. We used to ride our bikes on the local school's tennis courts. During the winter there would be no nets up.

one day she was out there pootling around, tarmac area 3 courts wide and long, not a single thing else.....

...apart from one pole used to hold a net up.

You can imagine the rest.

Took out 3 teeth - poor wee thing

Laugh? I nearly peed myself

I've wondered why they call those steel posts 'waratahs'.

I still wonder... :killingme:
