Is it just me or have the prices of 250's seemed to have gone up? people are starting to want ridiculus money for a bike thats like 20 years old?

just wondering weither i should hold out, until the prises have dropeed, or save that extra bit of dosh .. to get a hyosong 250 or sumit...

can't be sure about 250's but I do know that imports aren't getting cheaper etc as the dollar isn't doin so well in comparison. Dunno if this could be affecting it. Other thing might be that 250's are in more demand if bikes are selling more ie; people turning to more econimical transport therefore more learners and restricteds out there (?)

250 prices have always been high but they do seem to have crept up lately.
As Bertha mentioned could be due to increased demand.

I bought my first bike (CB250RS) in '95 for $900. 26,000k's on the clock, mint condition and GN250's used to go for less than that too.

I guess most of the older bikes have gone now just leaving the more expensive 'reissues' as well as the new bikes like Hyosung and Kawasaki's etc

Everything's going up (well, not everything otherwise they wouldn't make Viagra) coz our dollar's shite at the mo. Checked the tyre prices lately? They seem to be over-inflated.

Bike manufacturers are not making 250 sports bikes like they were 20 years ago. The 250cc 4 cylinder high revving sports bike is a thing of the past (unfortunately AFAIC) and most new bikes are twins or singles. Look at the new ninja for example... it is no longer finicially viable to make them, higher productions costs and people not willing to pay the extra $$$.

With performance not nearly as good as early 90's bikes and increased rider numbers, there will always be demand = increased prices. Unless the new law comes into effect, broadening the range of bikes available to learner/restricted riders. My 2C

So that begs the question, do i wait til the prices are gona drop ( if they ever will ?? ) or do i save my extra pennies for a nice little hyosong?

There are deals to be had if you want a fix-er-upper. Or this bike is just around the corner from you.. I've had a look at it and its quite tidy. Some niggly things wrong with it, otherwise its a bargain. Offer him 3k for it I reckon, as its been sitting there a while.

The biguns are going up as well, Honda has hiked their prices and there is another rise on its way apparently.

I'm watching Suzuki - still keen pricing on most models even if some are the end of line bikes not selling anywhere else. I suspect they will have a big jump soon too.

The one supplier that does not appear to know there is a global recession on is Triumph - some of their models have dropped in price - if I had $ for a new bike I'd be heading to the local Triumph dealer to try a Street Triple or even a new bonnie now they have a few more hp.

On the bright side with all the new stuff rising the second hand market should go up too!

If you have the $ and want to buy go for it now.

That is sad...trawling through Tarde Me looking at Hyodung 250s when your whole family owns them already. It could even be sadder than upgrading to a Hyodung 650

I hate the fact that Big Brand like Suzuki and Hondas are not making those high-revving 4 cylinder like they do in the 90's. I'm lucky enough to get hold of one and so far after 1000kms it's f'ing bloody awesome with the sheer noise it makes at 10k rpm riding on motorway.

As for the price of 250's are overpriced is just simple demand and supply. With the rich bastard in Saudi increasing price in Oil and greedy government projects will always hold the price at the pump up like they're on constant Viagra. Thus making a 250 more viable for purchase in fight with the price war. But the cost of maintaining an old bike is something you need to consider too. Just your try your luck and see if you could get hold of something cheap and tidy or save it and wait for a Hyobag or a Ninja in my preference.

As I did ^^ and happy with it

If this keeps up the prices will soon be back to where they were five years ago

I guess the people who are most pissed off are the guys who paid fifty grand for a Goldwing which then dropped to $35,000 and who subsequently sold it. Only to see the prices go back up now.

Ah well, I sympathise but...

Good bikes, as longs as it has been looked after. I would definitely take a decent condition cbr250 over a late model Hyobag any day, they're not even in the same league.

To which potentially new law do you refer?

If you want a bike, you want a bike. If they have a bike for sale, SOMEONE is gonna buy it. No skip 250cc's, no magical Hayabusa licence, and guess what they have for sale...

How can you tell if a bike (esp the cbr250's) have been 'shagged' as Damian put it?

a pretty good conditioned zxr250 1990 for $2750. To me, a little ruffed up bike (fairings wise) in the 250 range were going cheaper. But those well looked after models with moderate kms, people are wanting rediculous prices. Definatly not worth them hey

Because they redline at 20-squintillion odd rpm

There's only casual rough sex, or casual sex on a long term basis for these things.

it doesn't pay to read the figures in a mirror when doing currency conversions mujambee.....$1nz bought 80yen , now buys 50yen so a 100,000 yen bike was $1250.00 now $2,000.00.
