View Full Version : Anyone know about N-Zettas?

Hey, after having done up 1 old scooter I have the bug and have just bought an N-Zetta in pieces. Should be here tomorrow so am looking forward to getting stuck in.
So question is, to anyone who knows these bikes or has done one up, any tricks or good little mods I should look at. Have a few ideas but in general I just want to get it back to stock standard and use it daily after this. Maybe get it going a bit quicker with carb and exhaust mods. Know they aint rockets but a 2 stroke 175cc with twin exhausts should have some get up and go.
Cheers

I LOVE N-Zetas! They're so ugly they're beautiful! I know nothing about them, but I wish I did. All that luggage room on the front! I wanted to get one and put a big old leather suitcase on the front - it would be like having a full-size boot!
Unfortunately my partner seems to object to having greasy old 'project' bikes cluttering up the garage so I'm afraid you will have to do it all on my behalf.
Please post 'before' pics so I can live vicariously and enjoy your progress.

C-Zeta (aka Jawa) assembled under license in New Zealand.
awas had some interesting features - kickstarter swivelled around and became gear lever, some also had an auto clutch that disengaged on the first part of the gear lever movement

Yes...in 1970.Used to ride it off road.....used to scrap the running boards in corners.Used to not be able to start it last class at night school....all alone kicking furiously in the dark.Revved so hard it blew the voltage regulator to bits! If they could survive a dim witted 16 year old, they could survive into the 21st century.
It's the twin port Jawa 175 motor....with a body.Plenty of Jawa fanatics around.

theyre actually called NZeta.
they made a single pipe and twin pipe version. i have parts books manuals etc if you need copies...
XRVrider
23rd March 2009, 23:16
OK will get that name right from now on. Yes the twin pipe models are the 501, the first Cezeta as it was produced and the 502 with proper shock absorbers and indicators and the single zorst. Apparently the 502 had a better motor? Anyway, did you do anything special to yours Motu, except revs its brains out?
The little Jawa 50 we have has only the stator, no battery, and 6 volt lights, sounds like an NZeta is so much more complicated with a regulator ;-) Wonder if this thing is gonna have all its parts. I have an offer of copies of the service manual but if it doesnt work out I hope its OK to give you a shout Jellywrestler. Cheers

Here is all i know .. Grub had one for work - his first job .. so that would be around the mid-late 1960's .. .they took it away for a service and forgot to put in the oil properly. It siesed and died - but he really did love it until then.

My Dad had one of these in south taranaki some thirty years ago. Us boys pulled it out from under the hedge and put some gas in it and it went!! So we toured around the back country roads on it. It was comfy even two-up. Seeing pictures of it now I didnt realise it was so fugly - could its mother even love it?
No doubt a tidied up one with a non-sticky throttle cable and a well-adjusted gearchange would be a world apart from the first motorbike I ever road. I got my first ever tit-grope on the back of one of those.. she got distracted and rode through an electric fence in the dark LOL..
Wow, thats some time ago. ;) When you get it all going, I'll swap you a ride on my 650 for a ride on your zetta!

Wow, thats a real nice 502 with the indicators etc...
Good news is I picked mine up from Mainfreight yesterday. The guy I bought it off was telling the full truth and nearly everything is there... well I bet as far as he could tell. A clutch adjustment bolt and the 2 threaded exhaust flange nuts, with the cooling fins on them, are missing. No big deal, imagine I can get them somewhere as the engine was used in other CZ's and Jawa's. All in all its a lot bigger than I thought, nearly 6 feet long. and quite a solid heavy body. They must have had 2 bikes in the past as theres a lot of 2 of everything, great!!!
If anyone knows a Jawa or CZ freak, please let me know, I know of 1 guy in Wellington I must email for some parts.
So heres the before picture... The jigsaw puzzle begins :woohoo:

Ok so update on progress.
The old girl is back on her wheels, have refitted the front forks and bearings, and the plan is to put the engine back in on the weekend. Have had the head and barrel off and it looks pretty good and compression seems good too.
So need to make a few gaskets, like carb to barrel ones... they have 3 side by side in the manual and the carb body will hit the barrel if there is only one. Weird.
The electrics will be the hard part, I have an old broken wire loom and no battery or coil. Have a few clues about lectrics so we'll see how it goes.
Want to have her running next week while Im on holiday (at home), then pull it apart for paint etc.... Its still early days though :baby:

I think there should be a heat insulator between the carb and the barrel, so it would go barrel ->gasket->insulator->.gasket->carb. (the insulator would be like a thick bakelite gasket)

Great, ta for that. The thickness of those layers would explain the lack of space between the carb and stud end it bolts on to without them. Was thinking to make up a gasket, maybe plastic, or some acrylic material, quite thick to space the carb out from the head sufficiently. Time to try a few things out I suppose :sherlock:

The twin pipe one I remember had electric start and a voltage regulator - so you are looking at a DC generator if that's the case.
Ixion
4th April 2009, 16:15
I think the motors were the Jawa ones, so yes, they were a DC genny diurect driven off the crankshaft. Never owned an N-Zeta, rode a C-Zeta (same thing) for about a fortnight, and owned most sizes of the Jawas of the period
The electrics were about the most unreliable thing about them, the rest was pretty solid . Seized up every so often of course, has to be expected, but nothing beyond the remedification skills of those well known two stroke repairers, Messrs Block and Mallet.
I broke several transmissions shafts too, but that was probably because I was inordinately cruel to them

If you did find any of the exhaust flanges that'd be great, so long as you can part with them of course. Still looking for an english copy of a manual, nearly have one, just not quite yet.

Here's pics Klingon.
Wheels were first thing to go back on to the bike, needs new suspension rubbers on but the original should last long enough to put together for a few weeks. The motor was easy to slot in, just lay the bike on its side, and lift wriggle push wriggle routine. There's been much cleaning up and checking going on lately so good to see the bike coming together with wheels etc...
Thanks to other websites for wiring diagrams and a few blokes in town who understood what coil and battery to get. All in all it wasnt too bad once I fitted what came with it, pretty much all there and after hours of tracing and testing, replacing broken wires. Then after a bit of petrol into the carb, and 40-50 monotonous kicks the old girl roared into life... really bloody roaring with no exhausts at all... bit unexpected so scared the living be-jesus out of me to be honest. Great that it ran, nice to know the engine is ok so far.
Next is to finish all the cables, fit exhaust pipes and mufflers, running her for longer and make sure all electrics doing what they need to...Bit of luck by the weekend that might be sorted and test riding around the back yard.
Its not hard to put back together but really rewarding after its been in pieces for over 15 years. After starting the engine, the first ride is what Im looking forward to next :ride::ride:

The old girl lives... and has been around the block a few times, scuse the cliché.
The electrics are almost sorted... seems as though it has a dynastarter... as there's a key position that is to the left, anti clock, and is spring loaded. You twist the key that way and the engine turns over... and blew the dash ignition light bulb... many times until I disconnected the starter wire. Anyone know how to wire these babies up, or have one in the garage you could check for me? I need to know what wires go to and from the dynamo, regulator and ignition, theres only 2 or 3 so not too complicated I think (hope).
Anyway, she runs pretty good, and the gears were interesting to begin with until I lubed the shifter sleeve a bit. Funny when you check all first except the obvious. All in all, its real ugly cos of paint and surface rust and heaps of things to do, fix or replace, but nothing major mechanically. Am trying to get all the grit and crap out of the petrol tank and see if its rusted inside. Looks OK but the proof will be when I get a light and mirror that can see into the corners I spose. Hopefully its good enough to use, although I have another that needs to be treated for rust so should get one to work.
Some minor welding of body parts is coming up, front brake cable to crimp the end onto, the list is long.... More pics coming soon.

The bike is ridable, YAY!!! :woohoo: Test rides have got to be the most enjoyable part of this project so far. Have conked out far enough from home to have to push it a bit though... not so fun, but its all part of it I spose :brick:
The fugly has progressed mechanically but its paintwork and 15 year old filler job are still poor. The "to do" list just never seems to get shorter, but need to get a speedo cable made up, and test fit all trims soon etc...

Its been a while since the last post but there's still s bit of action going on ;-)
Have purchased a 502 model to do up as well. Check it, they look like the terrible twins, one a bit of a Cyclops or something and rusty faded bodies.
Pretty bad condition wise but the rust on both is only surface luckily, and its all solid underneath the soon to be removed paint. Some parts are on the way and the 502 motor is being bored soon and fully overhauled. The 501, with the horn in middle of leg shield, is going pretty well, and rides quite well, is getting pulled apart for some welding next week, then paint, new this, polish that etc... 502 to follow, all this is going to take ages, but all in good time I spose.
Still many parts to make or find, like a 502 header pipe and the indicator light bases/bulb holders (have found the lenses) and chrome ring around rear of the headlight.
They're fun to ride, go quite well and even in crap looking condition people stare and wave, bit weird but quite a laugh.

Ok so a bit further down the track now.... these days the 501 is stripped and paintless, engine nearly back together and the 502's near throw away engine (from a bloke's shed down the coast) is rebored and waiting for assembly, new crank, seals and bearings all round.
Jeez its amazing how well an old shed find gunge and grit covered engine comes up with a bit of cleaning, wire brush and a steam clean. Pics to come soon.
A bloke in Czech Republic has been in contact, who's well into Cezeta's, quite amazing that over 130,000 of these were made for use in Europe and 4000 NZeta's here. We got the good end of it, with electric starters on all models and a few other bits and pieces that may have improved the scooter. If anyone is interested in these old scoots, give me a shout, can put you in touch with this guy.

Both motors are together... wasnt too difficult, just a lot of cleaning and checking, making gaskets... blah blah. The carbs arent on in the pics, but are ready to fit and bit more polishing and fettling needed, the dynamo's and all electrical stuff is on... proof will be in the starting and running of course.
Need a header pipe for the 502 (single zorst) engine, and got to chrome the 501's headers... list goes on. First 3 pics are of the 502 motor, last one has 501 (twin zorst) in foreground, 502 behind.
All in all, the 501 is what I am concentrating on, like the mechanical side of things more than panel and paint, so perhaps havnt done things in the right order, but should get paint on soon.
Any recommendations on chroming anyone?

Hi, after a bit of a compulsory break, new house and baby, have finally found time to carry on the work on the old scoots. In case anyone is interested, here's how it's going.
I am no pro, so if you have any constructive advice, I am all ears.
Half way through panel and paint of the 501 right now, have upholstered the seat (poorly), but will re-do when I am a bit further down the line.
Repaired the seat base, which had little rust holes everywhere. Would be difficult to replicate this base well, so removed all the rust and fibre glassed the back of it then filled and painted the side you see. Looks great, and seems really solid, more rigid than before but not sure how long it will last if the rust I removed gets a chance to react under the resin. Local fibreglasser reckons with no air or moisture, the resin will seal everything. We'll see.
There was a bit of welding and a bit of body filler to apply, due to previous damage to the old girl, and the pretty strong but ugly welding that had gone on long before I laid eye's on it. Filling a curved body and covering old injuries is a difficult skill and one I lack the most, so it's been a slow painful process at times, have made good progress so should be happy... but I havn't finished yet...
Have my own compressor and spraying equipment, but am still in the experimental stage trying settings, pressures and things, to get a good finish. Bit of an art, and time consuming to get right, which I am no where near yet... but learning all along the way. I am determined to give it my best shot, and I know what I do may not be perfect, but so long as I am happy at the end (am pretty fussy), I will not take it to a pro to spray it. See how it goes.
The blue on the tank is the colour the old girl will be, with a few parts white.

Fun to ride, super comfortable sitting bolt upright. The drum brakes work well with new brake linings, not bedded in yet, so I guess will get a bit better perhaps.

Just checked this link and it's not working. I was on this site recently so maybe it has a temporary glitch so keep checking.
Shout with how you get on, if all else fails, I can email you a copy, just PM me your email address.

. Had it at 45 miles per hour, but it will go faster.
When I was 11 I had a Vespa 180. A guy in town had an NZetta. I could go faster than him - on either bike. He was probably 15 stone. I was probably a third of his weight.
Seem to recall getting over 65mph on the Vespa - downhill. Think the NZetta went faster. Vespa could wheelie better! :woohoo:

Many many thanks XRVrider!
It looks like that site has been down this year, and it seems I don't have enough site privileges here on the forum to PM anyone. However I was able to access the site through the Wayback Machine at web.archive.org/web/20110628073017/http://saveass.com
Cheers!

Time for an update, has been a long while since I last posted about the 2 NZeta restorations I have been working on.
Now the 502, from near the start of this thread, is restored as well. Very happy with it, very nearly 100% original, parts, paint colour etc...
Am about to start the registration process, which is going to be tricky by the looks.
Check the pics out anyway, it rides perfect, no rattles, behaves well for an old 2 stroke, and is loads of fun to ride.
Have started another NZeta project, but it is a 350 twin Jawa 2 stroke beast. Am half way through bodywork on that, have the engine and it fits, just.
Cheers all.

now all you need is a KTM motocross motor. I saw a Gas Gas two stroke road registerd motard the other day that would be a suitable donor by the looks
