Don't know if this is common knowledge or not...but this looks good... Looks like an established Aussie trackday firm is setting up at Hampton Downs.
http://www.hamptondownsridedays.co.nz/
The website is not fully operational yet though.
According to Bike Rider magazine they are accepting bookings for the following dates :
Monday 8th June
Saturday 20th June
Friday 17th July
Friday 14th August
Friday 4th Sept
Saturday 12th Sept
Sunday 13th Sept (2 day-er )
They are also bringing the California Superbike School to New Zealand :woohoo:
http://www.californiasuperbikeschool.co.nz/
4 school dates planned for this year.
Sept 10th & 11th (Initially Level 1)
Nov 19th & 20th (Level 1 & 2)
Some further info:
The firm will be hiring track bikes and gear for the school and the track days.
Standard Suzuki GSXR600's with race panels. $350 per day with a maximum of $4500 of damage liability (ie if you write it off that is the maximum cost to you)
Full riding kit - Technics leathers, gloves, boots and Arai Helmet - $75 per day
Track construction is on schedule and it is likely bikes will be the first to use the track as pit garages may not be complete. Track surface is not thought to be a problem for bikes when it opens.
For more information or to make a booking, just call Darren on (09)412 6266 or email info@hamptondownsridedays.co.nz

Agree that the track looks like it will have some challenging corners particularly on those early dates their advertising the school running when they wont have any asphalt on them.

From the www.hamptondowns.com website re construction update:
Clayton Reid of Ross Reid Contractors and Dr Peter Goldsmith of Fraser Thomas Ltd (Consulting Engineers and Project Managers) have mobilised all their respective staff to complete the 2.8km International Track by June 2009. Clayton and Peter said "It's a big challenge but given reasonable weather we can do it."
- No bull they think they can do it! They were surposed to have it finished in January! I would love to see the penalty clauses being paid out on this contract!
Also good to see that the pictures from December 2008 onwards truely reflect the status of the track (i.e not there!).
Its just easier to see how they are progressing as i drive past on my way to taupo to a track which exists!

On my way back from Taupo trackday yesterday I hopped off at the Hampton Downs off ramp to take a look for myself, after hearing different stories about finished, or not, it was.
can confirm it is near perfect for the world motorcross championships- piles of mud and dirt, and not a cubic inch or tarmac to be be seen anywhere.
It will be a busy 2 months for those boys if they want perople riding on it in June! I'll be there whenever it's ready!

It'd be interesting to know the cost of this (no doubt prohibitively expensive!)

I thought they were having trouble with the foundations at Hampton Downs and that is the reason why the track hasn't even been started with having tarmac being put down on it.
If thats the case then there is no way it will be ready in June.

Agreed... remember the early problems at Taupo before some decent rubber was laid down. It's not till they have a few good car meetings that the track will be of any great use to bikes, but then you don't want V8's going out there too early as they'll just ripple the surface up and make it virtually one line in every corner for us.
I've done a number of CSS ride days at both Eastern Creek and Philip Island... these guys are very good and have a great operation going. I'm really looking forward to giving Hampton Downs a go on a ride day, and then doing the four levels of training at with the CSS.
Hiring a bike and all the gear for a day is roughly $400AU. There is a big wedge that they 'hold' on your credit card for the day just in case you ditch the bike... but no one is going to wreck one of those nice new Gixxer 6's.

Hampton Downs Ride Days (http://www.hamptondownsridedays.co.nz/) has agreed exclusive rights to run bike track days and the superbike school for 5 years.
Cost will be $199. Weekday events will use the full circuit. Weekend events will use the 2.8km national circuit. ... so for Aucklanders it should be cheaper than the trip to Taupo plus its easy to do in one day.
They expect to be the first to use the track in June and there shouldnt be a problem with grip. The surface is a specialist racing compound with high grip from the start..

How does this work with someone wanting to hire the track for a private track day, to run bikes? (eg Frostys days)
Mort
6th April 2009, 17:03
Exclusive means exclusive. The track have struck deals with other companys to provide car track days, and training days etc... Its all about maintaining an "assured" standard and for insurance reasons apparently. Personally I think a bit of competition would be healthy for the track day scene but thats the way its gone... They did the same at Phillip Island and Eastern creek I believe...
This looks good for folks who live further away.
From the Hampton Downs website :
Completion of Hampton Downs moved a step closer with the delivery of furniture to the appartments. Rental of the apartments will start 1st May 2009. They operate like Motels and will sleep up to 5 people per night for $250 per night. So if you are visting Auckland or Hamilton give Jamie a call on 09 5207841 and make a booking.
there's also a campground.

We in NZ have it easy as far as trackday costs go. Generally because of the quality of the tracks. Hampton Downs is supposed to be in a whole new league as far as NZ tracks go. This is part of the cost.
I know the people running the ride days and superbike school and you can expect the safest most well run days we've seen.
Hampton Downs Ride Days will have tyre sales/fitting and mechanical service facilities and a few other extra's that will differentiate it from the current group of trackday companies.
Expect the best.

it costs me over $200 to go o taupo including gas etc getting up at 4am is also a pain but taupo is a really fun track to ride and I will still go there but we will now have a great track next door to Auckland.
if you look at the pricing it cost $200 for eastern creak or philip island translate into NZ dollars and it works out to be about $240nz.
we are still getting a better deal on the only track in NZ of its grade.

http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=125771&stc=1&d=1239160497
By comparison a day at Taupo is a bargain (even more so at somewhere like Manfield).
Considering Hampton Downs is a supposed to be a world class venue, as good as the best international circuits then $199 would seem reasonable. For me at least it works out cheaper than Taupo. However, as someone said above there would seem to be a considerable profit margin at this price so I think its right to expect the very best from this firm.
One further point of interest here is the provision of hire bikes. New GSXR600's at $350 per day with limited damage liability. This is a very viable option for anyone considering a new bike. The cost includes tyres and fuel. Just turn up and ride. If you were to buy such a bike and do, say, 10 trackdays on it it would cost considerably more than to hire one when you look at the cost of purchase and consumables and insurance etc. It also gives the opportunity to hire a bike that you may not be able to afford or would consider as a road bike. I think thats a good deal and is good for expanding participants in trackdays.
So far so good... but people will expect the best from these days.

Yeah I wouldn't expect demand for Taupo for example to drop off either. It's a good fun track in it's own right and well placed as far as access from anywhere in the north island goes.

I have a problem with the 'Max $4500' liability, on account of the insurance companies seem to write off a new bike when a sparrow shits on the seat. So even a low-end, low-side bin is likely to attract a $4500 fee.
Luckily, I have my own bike, but geez I'd love to give a modern Gixer a go, but not with that price-tag hanging off the end. Hell's teeth, I'd never push to anywhere near the limits so what would be the point?
Does anyone know of a reinsurer who will insure against the excess?

Unfortunately that's life when it comes to other peoples bikes. I'd say though by them having the race fairings on there the plastics would be significantly cheaper to replace than if it were a road bike.

Wasn't the drifters.
The place was sweet until the A1 turned up & ripped it up, and then did it all over again next time.

Yeh, but those services are the same as what you get at Taupo with MotoTT - $100 prepaid, $120 pay on the day.
I think it'll end up being a 'who you know' sorta deal where people end up forming into 'trackday club groups' and hiring out the track privately and not making any profit on the day.

Yeh, but those services are the same as what you get at Taupo with MotoTT - $100 prepaid, $120 pay on the day.
I think it'll end up being a 'who you know' sorta deal where people end up forming into 'trackday club groups' and hiring out the track privately and not making any profit on the day.
... be not insured if you're on a road bike...
Check out the updated pics. Progress! Woohoo!

Ok, didnt have anyhting else to do today so went down to the open day (third one I have attended) to see how the construction was progressing.
We walked the "National" circuit which is completly lime stabilised and has about 80% of the basecourse laid.
All I can say is FUCK MEEEEE!!!!!
Once you start walking it you get more of a feel for the elevation changes, the infeid corkscrew hairpain is going to be insane, especailly given the fact that at the point you want to be on the brakes you are only just seeing the corner as you come over a creast. The front staight looks super steap standing at the base of the hill. This track is going to be AMAZZING!!!!
Hampton Downs Ride Days (http://www.hamptondownsridedays.co.nz/) has agreed exclusive rights to run bike track days
I talked had a talk with Tony Roberts the managing director who said he had not signed any exclusive deals with anyone in regard to orgainised track days, his words were that the the track was there to be hired by whoever wanted to use it comercial intrest or otherwise (read whoever will pay us money we will be happy to take it:laugh:).

Besides the fact it's a right-hand track it has a number of long fast corners as well as the slow hairpins. This simulation kinda shows the rise and fall but it's nothing compared to how it'll be for real.

I've noticed the walls in the few pics that are on the web site. A little concerning I agree. I'm planning on making the next walk around day at the end of the month 26th I think and check it out for myself.
The circuit is clockwise I belive, I'm looking forward to it opening and giving us Auckland dudes another track to frequent but another concern is the price! twice the price of other circuits :gob: but if its twice as good

On their website they talk you through a simulated lap in an F3000 car, which'll corner faster than a bike, and the fastest corner is coming onto the kinked straight: 130kmh.
There are definitely some looong corners but nothing particularly fast. Don't get me wrong, it'll still be fun and challenging, but it's very PC with it's corner speeds. Not a high speed sweeper in sight.
Still, it's something different, and I can't wait to turn a tyre on it.
nooooo, don't burst my bubble!
PC is not what I want! I'm hangin' out for some fast bends to mix it up some. Guess it was inevitable that it'd follow the way of the rest of the european "world class" "modern" circuits... I hope I'm wrong tho'!!!
Really hope my bubble hasn't been burst.

.
That's because of the lack of runoff and armco...not the fast corners. Talking of which, they're talking about sealed runnoff at Hampton Downs. Now that might slow down the cars........ The runoff at the end of the 750m back straight does not look nearly big enough.
Any progress at the track?

Heyyyy! Kiwi Rider Magazine too.
I made the ads :-)
You'd have to ask Darren about costs and dates - he's cool - ring him.
latest ad attached
Thats the ad I've got infont of me in Bike Rider Magazine, nice job on it.
On the subject of cost I've just done a quick comparison with Aussie tracks and the UK... (using todays exchange rate)
I'm keen to rent a Gixxer 600, much better suited to this than my SV!
Im definately keen on doing one of these rider days. Wonder if they'll have a photographer down there? Would probably need a golf cart or something to get around the outfield on.
The cost for the track day is $199.00 and the cost per day for the school is $429.00 if you bring your own bike and gear. You can get two days of world class tuition and a ride day for $1,057.
Bound to be worth it in the long run aye!

Look at http://www.superbikeschool.com.au/ and you'll get the general idea. Cost is $429 per day if I remember correctly.
Just to give CSS a bit of a plug. Although the cost may be quite high it would be completely wrong to compare CSS days to a track day with instructors hanging about. The CSS course is a rigorous analysis and practice of track riding techniques. Each day is a long hard day of lessons and track exercises many of which you would/could not attempt on a track day or on the road. Once learned and used the techniques will transform your riding on track and road. It is suitable for any level of rider from novice (like me) to top racer (Example: when I did level 3 I was sat in class next to Leon Camier - currently leading the British Superbike championship. I am still in touch with him. To this day he says the CSS techniques changed his riding so its not bullshit!! Thomas Luthi is another example).
Many riders spend fortunes on faster bikes and go-faster bits and track days to improve their skills and speed. The CSS course will make any rider a better faster rider. The cost of the course is an investment in yourself which pays back every time you ride.

Superbike school is gonna be about $430 with your own bike. A regular trackday is $199. It'd be well worth the extra the first time to lock in good habits from the start.
$350 to hire a bike for the day with a $4.5k excess. Can have a $1k excess for $725.
Personally I think unless you're planning on pushing the envelope you are fine on your own bike. Hell you ride on the open road without crashing right? Just because it's a track doesn't mean you'll automatically crash.
Ya gotta think like the dude in your avatar.....what would Nitro Nori do Maki-san?
