View Full Version : Christchurch: Metal polishing and electroplating?

If anyone has had experience in restoring a motorcycle and has had a good experience with a polisher/electroplater I would love to hear from you.

I need to use the services of someone who can follow written instructions once they have been explained to them. Someone who doesn't completely mess up a job because "that's the way we always do it". Thanks.

Heres a hint for you, DONT go to a certain crowd down Clarence St......MOST UNSATISFACTORY
Good prices BUT SHIT RESULTS cause they dont triple plate [copper/nickel/chrome] they omit the copper & hey presto a year or so later it all peels off, Dont ask me how I know this....:(
Also Accords do a quite good job but charge like a wounded bull
Id go to Timaru platers

It might be a bit late for that EuroDave...F*ck. A certain person there said that he didn't like Japanese metal, it was crap, blah blah...The results weren't what I wanted by a long shot. Blame the metal?

The bugger is that I can control my bikes restoration but only up to a point because there are some things that are out of my hands. It just drives me crazy that people can't follow the most simple of written instructions!

There's a polisher on St Asaph, down by Parrot and Son, about opposite Duke Street. Fantastic work, very very happy with the results.

As far as electroplaters go... well, I've had some stuff done by Abel, as have customers. Impressed with the results, polishing correctly deep into corners etc, as it should be done. However, and bear in mind I've not had anything done for 2-3 years, they do take an unbelieveably long time to get anything done (or at least did). Qualitywise it was worth the wait, but you need to be aware of it and keep cracking the whip.

Most other places I've tried don't make the extra effort to get all the scratches out of the hard to reach places. YMMV.

Oh, Accord on Montreal, wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire, a few years ago... however they have changed hands in that time, so might be worth a look again.

/edit: Crowd on Maldon St have looked after me too, although I suspect the work was done by Timaru platers.

I asked the same question a while ago

Apparently the "Go-To Guy" - at least for Vintatge stuff - is a chap known as "Shiney Bits" down in Geraldine.

Haven't used him myself....

Thread dig...

But whats the latest gossip on chromers and polishers? I'm looking at either getting bits chromed, or polished & clear coated.

Best polisher and beadblaster in ChCh is Dennis Gooch - used to be Universal polishers. Works from home Pauline St behind eastgate.
not connectd to a plater though...Auto restoratons use him for things like RR grilles....

plating, use Geraldine for restorations. i tend to use a lot of nickel which Superb do reasonably well - and cheap.

anodising - there's an outfit beside Jade stadium - Plating solutions Ltd - who can do anything you want. Two guys ex Air NZ...

I'm pretty sure their prep work gets sent down the road to Escort Metal Polishing though, so go to CMF and check they can do it (with the covers present), then go to EMP and save yourself a service and handling charge from CMF.

No, Universal was round the corner in Hawdon st - John Sullivan who did bead and grit blasting was next door - those two together were very convenient.
i tend to use whichever polisher/blaster/plater the customers budget fits. Dennis is expensive but bloody good. Escort is cheaper and quite good....Frames go to Euroblast. Frame painting Industrial Painters in Buchan st.Won't use powder now....

anodizing.co.nz did my last lot. They're not in Christchurch. Send them an email with a picture. They will quote the job, and give you a firm time. If you want it repolished before reanodized, my advice is to have that done first.
