Well seeing as none of my customers want my services at the moment I thought I'd carry out a little technology test.
If it works the fun should start after lunch sometime

I suspect MarkS has got one of those SPOT things so that her indoors can keep tags on him when he's out ;) and that he is going to go for a ride with it running today.

That SPOT thingy looks interesting!
On the Satellite view you could track your days ride through the hills & tracks.
Do you really want the missus seeing where you've been going tho?
"Mark honey, why were you stationary so long at Toppys in Martinborough?"
The emergency side of it seems a great idea tho, and no need for cellphone coverage is good for what we do! :2thumbsup

SPOT is a very cool little gadget that is to some extents a GPS and Personal Locator Beacon in one. SPOT will not let you follow a route when out riding nor can you use it to navigate if you get lost. Also spot uses some comercial agency called the GEOS International Emergency Response Center to notify your local emercency responce centre if you hit the "help me now" button.
Personally I'd go for a hand held GPS (better for navigating and recording where you have been) and for a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) which transmitts to the NZ emergency responce center directly. The two gadgets do cost almost twice as much but they work much better for what they are intended to do.
Still SPOT is better at some things such as sending out an "I'm OK" message and a "I need help but not urgenly" (i.e. I've broken down come and pick me up) message.

Hes gone in a straight line from Raumati Beach to Pae hill.

That #18 (Leatham Road) looks interesting...
that was quite fun
a normal (but fun) gravel road leads to the Leatham Conservation Area. I went about 3k past this on an easy 4wd track before getting turned back by a possibly dicey river crossing (would be easy if you had help and/or weren't carrying too much gear).
Possibly the 4wd track goes up to 24km to Bottom Gordons Hut
could be worth a look for you top of south island wallahs

Hey Mark, although your new gadget brought on fits of jealousy cos of where you went to test it, thought it looked kinda cool to have!
What did you think of the test?

I think its well worth having. Cost $270 from tard me and costs $115US per year to use. It needs to have a clear view of the sky to transmit. I needed to push the "I'm OK' button more to make the track more 'followable'. I'll bring it on future rides so the 'stay at homes' can see what ere up too.

I see what you're saying - can you not get it to just track constantly like a GPS then without pushing the message button constantly?
