Relax everyone, I'm back safe and sound after a thouroughly enjoyable South Island "recce"/weekend break.

Thursday
Myself, Mangell6 (Mike) and Mrs Mangel6 (Teresa) left on Thursday afternoon (3/3), staying the night at separate motels. I stayed at the Best Western, in Koromiko. Not a bad motel, friendly owner, good facilities and 5 min from Picton.

Friday
I met up with Mike & Teresa on Friday, for breakfast at the Dog and Frog in Picton. We were joined by Stevo (local Picton KB'er) and shortly after by Paul_inNZ (err, Paul) and Mrs Paul_inNZ (Vicki) who took the ferry on Friday morning. We set off for our first stop, the Waiau Lodge in Waiau, via Blenheim, Seddon, Ward, Kaikoura, H70 to Lyndon, Clarence Reserve and finally Waiau. One thing I noticed first off was how much harder/rough the roads are. I think it has something to do with the quartz in the tar? There are heaps of white specs interspersed with the tar. Apart from that, great roads, no traffic, no cops and beautiful scenery all the way.

The Waiau Lodge is a TOP place to stay. Parking around the back for bikes, under cover (by way of tall building) and with security light. The staff are exceedingly friendly and helpfull. Rooms are relatively basic, but have wash basins in them. Bar is at the Lodge, great food and good prices. After we arrived, we unloaded the bikes and went for a burn over the Leader Valley Road. Apart from some resealing on the Waiau side, road was relatively clean. It is a really nice bike road, but a few patches caught me out and my rear slide out slightly once, scaring the bejeezus out of me. No harm, no foul, all's good (Just take it easy :P).

Saturday
We left Waiau, and hit Hanmer Springs. According to Paul, it has become alot more commercialised since past years. Looks like a nice place to visit, and veg out in the hot pools! We skipped that, since they apparently induce laziness/drowsiness, and we still had some way to go. We left Hanmer, hitting Glynn Wye and the Lewis Pass. That is another stunning piece of road. You have to be careful not to stare at the scenery too long whilst riding! We carried on past Maruia Springs and had lunch at the Springs Junction. It really has a feel of an Alpine village, hence the name of the cafe! Left Springs, and made a stop in Reefton. They have a great visitors information centre there. Continued on SH7 till Ikamatua, where we turned off onto a back road, straight into Blackball. I was informed/warned that the Blackball Hilton is a place you either love, or hate. I love it. It's hard to explain the "Hilton", decoration is very history focused. Rooms are basic, other facilities more than adequate. They have a nice lounge, with bigscreen TV, games room and bar. Service is superb, and very affordable. Bike friendly, with a lock-up garage out back.
If the urge so takes you, you can go possum hunting after dark, with "Bob". I guess he's a local??...I had my first taste of Black Pudding. I must admit, the taste is rather nice. I was unable however, to eat more than one bite since the thought of it was too much! (Hey mike/paul, if you want the SA receipe send me a PM...;)) There are SO many other interesting things at the Hilton, which I'll let the others fill you in on.

Sunday
It rained heavily during the night, but when we left it had stopped. Infact, apart from a brief 15 or 30 min period of light rain, we were dry the entire trip! (Thanks to Teresa's magic pants, and Vicki's magic jacket!). Left Blackball and turned right just before Greymouth, heading through Rapahoe and Punakaiki, where we stopped briefly to see the Pancake Rocks (by way of postcard in the Visitors Centre - it would have been a 30min round trip walk to see them). On through Charleston into Westport for Gas. We headed through the Rahui saddle (I think) past the Buller river. Absolutely breathtaking! Stevo came zipping past us from the opposite direction, turned around and escorted us the whole way back to Picton (where btw, we had coffee at his place - thanks!). We stopped in Murchison for lunch, where we were supposed to meet Sniper_CBR, but circumstances meant that we'd meet up later. Next stop was St. Arnaud, a rather beautiful (use that word alot, must be a south island thing!) beach/holiday spot. They had a classic boat day on, which we caught the very end of. Sniper (Stuart) met us here, and followed us back to Blenheim. We left, for the final section back to Picton, passing through the Wairau Valley. If I have the correct name/place, this is one of the best piece of roads I've found for me and my bike. Sort of similar the the Gladstone Hill, but more desert like. Very very fast corners, and lots of them :) Backroads around Blenheim and into Picton.

The ferry crossing back was a little rough, and the loading/unloading was completely botched leaving us sweating for 30 mins in the stuffy, NON airconditioned vehicle decks which are hotter than hell itself!

It's a pity I HAVE to work tomorrow, I only got back at 11:30pm, and it's 01:35 now  All up, it was a trip to be remembered for life, and I can only look forward to the big KB South Island adventure next year, March.

Great write up Dave. And thank you all for letting me tag along on parts of your journey. I really love being able to ride the CBR as much as and was certainly great to meet you all and get to know you a little. Wouldn't have minded doing the whole trip with you, but had a real busy Sat.

My journey: Friday....
Met all the tour party at cafe in Picton, and as Dave described to Waiau. Having ridden the Leader Rd out to SH1 I took this route from Parnassus through the Hundalees and back to Picton. Trip = 470kms.

Sunday....
Left Picton went through Wangamoas to Nelson down to Murchison, then headed to Westport expecting to meet the group somewhere on the way. Caught them just this side of Westport, then back to Murchison, and as Dave described Back to Picton via Nelson Lakes. Trip = 615kms.

Needless to say my bum was feeling it by the end of yesterday. Fantastic roads travelled during the day and weekend though. Coming down the Wairau Valley was a long straight haul but the blustery NW wind made it harder work and a little less of a cruise.

I will post a few pics when I have recharged the digital cam.

Thanks again heaps guys. Was great!!!!!!! :2thumbsup :2thumbsup :2thumbsup

It's suprisingly comfortable. I'm quite happy to ride all day on it. Another thing that helps, is that any discomfort disappears when you hit corners. By the end of Sunday, I was getting a little sore, but if you were really worried about that, I've heard a sheepskin gives you an extra couple of hundred kms...

I really meant it when I said it's MY perfect tourer.

I most certainly took my own tie downs. The ones they supply are ok, but only for supplementary support, over and above the usual 3 point tie-down. I am overly cautious though, so if you didn't have any, you'd be ok with theirs.

I was very disappointed with the amount of space you are given to tie down your bike (which in alot of cases is worth more than the cars they ferry). We seem to be a low priority to them in that regard. And, did I mention it's unacceptably hot!??!

One guy on a BMW tourer got a little shitty with Paul. I think alot of it had to do with the heat - St. Paul himself would probably end up decking someone in those conditions!

On the Leader Valley road, I was pulling away nicely from Steve. I thought Choice! I'm a super fast rider  I must be getting good in my old age. We stop at the end, and the bugger has been riding with ONE hand, taking pic's and movies :brick: Talk about insults! :niceone:

He got some great pics I think, I've never had an "action" pic from a ride. From the way Steve described the Wairau Valley, that may not be the road I was thinking of. Or, if it was the first section is what I meant. I will agree, the last part into Picton was verrrry straight and long. (Still heaps better than SH1 from Foxton to Wellington, that stretch is enough to cause someone to ride deliberately into a wall!)

Thanks to you too Steve. Was great having you along, and we got a nice detour past Blenheim which I'm sure we wouldn't have taken otherwise!

Hey! To be totally fair the guy was an utter knob and a septic to boot riding a rented BMW in loafers and a ski suit. (the warning signs were all there)

He was travelling with a kiwi couple on a maroon honda 4 (older one with twin square head lamps). My beef was that they shagged about for ages after everyone had tied their bike. They un did my tie down (I had gone up stairs by then). Slipped theirs into the deck hook and slipped mine into the loop in the bottom of the hook, and didn't bother to tighten mine back up...

Like Dave said it was a rough crossing and while it worked out OK it's really bloody bad form (how would you like someone fucking with your bike after you left it - It's just not done). I pulled the septic up about it and he got all panicy and started hiding behind his mate who was going to get all aggro about it. Initially claiming he knew nothing about it etc etc... Then "Whats yer problem it didn't fall over eh" sort of shit... Fuck me, a 'Look, sorry about that, I thought I had tightened it up OK - No harm done I'll be more careful next time' was all I was looking for but massive aggro and a 'prove it' attitude... Wankers....

Sorry - ya just don't do shit like that half arsed. I took my own ties and did a good job, I think it's a pretty crap thing to do to another guys bike..

Well thats what i think, your opinion might differ.

Paul N

btw - I should have guessed these folk were trouble. At the queue to get on they were facing the wrong way and didn't notice the people in front of them were waved on board so they keep everyone waiting while they fart about getting their shit together.. Musta been pissed or something..

We had a super good time.

The company was fantastic and stress free. Weather was better than we hoped for (that wind got old fast), food was great, service was excellent and the roads I could ride forever.

That is an excellent and easy long weekend jaunt. See it now while it still exists folks....

Our 25 year old bike clocked up 1200km, broke 50,000km and Mike, Teresa and Stoney didn't embarrass the old chuffer too much on the road. The new seat was OK, Vickis back stood up OK and all in all I'm as happy as a boy thats just discovered his new girlfriend is a nymphomaniac that owns a brewery

I completely agree with you, didn't mean to imply I didn't  Sorry about that. I would be seriously upset if someone undid MY tie-downs, whether or not they did them up correctly afterwards. The guy was very arrogant and confrontational, completely unnacceptable by my books. It's really frustrating trying to reason with people like that, since they don't actually listen to what you're saying. I'm glad I wasn't parked next to him, since you were alot more diplomatic than I think I could have been.

A great weekend trip and a safe one at that. Those tiedowns supplied by the ferry co. leave a lot to be desired good that you took your own. Certainly not cricket having some one else undo ones tiedowns, if the bike was to fall over it should be owner who didn't tie it down properly.

October for us (Moto Guzzi rally)

Looking at an extended repeat for this time next year for KB. Lessons learnt are we have to manage numbers for touring... It gets difficult so we will need to sort summat out

However. All I can say is if you have the opportunity and the $$ do it tomorrow. All it took us was a long weekend and Vicki and I were 2 up on an old shitter. The weather is still good, the colour change is in the trees and you never know what tomorrow will take away from you..... Just go..

People - Dave will agree I'm sure. Just that little circuit we did is worth it. It's paradise. The local car drivers wave at you happily, the Police just tell you to slow down and the beer is cold.... Buy me a beer and I'll pencil in some biking roads and good places to stop (or find your own - they are everywhere)

I better start doing that for the big KB South Is. trip in March 06, or the time will creep around (as it does), and I'll find myself pennyless!

I am quite glad that I don't live in the South Is. It's such a beautiful place, a place where you should go on holiday. I'd hate to get used to such beauty  ;) Besides, I'd miss almost getting taken out by boi racer in his shitty cortina (NC8525) like today :angry2:

Cool stuff there Fordy, I like the thought of my pics being wallpaper quality :niceone: The Formerly Blackball Hilton is quite big, it extends a fair bit behind the front. They have about 20 rooms on the top floor, and a large ground floor with bar, dining room, lounge, games room, kitchen, etc... They even have an art gallery!

It was nice meeting you all. Sorry I couldnt catch up and do a bit of a trip with you. Seemed the biker Gods were against me.

Friday when I was meant to meet up with you all and go riding I was called to work to drive :argh: to CHCH. Then planning to meet you on Sunday for a nice ride back, the girlfriend falls nicely ill and I spent the whole of Saturday night and Sunday morning cleaning up and rubbing her back.

Eventually though, when she was asleep I managed to sneak out, fire up and shoot off to St Arnaud to meet with you all. Great catching up and SC, great bike!!! Needed to turn off as you guys went through Renwick as I had a funny feeling I was in a bit of trouble. Got home and she was awake, oh no.

Nice meeting you all once again and maybe Stevo and I can get off our lazy arses and come visit you in the NI.

If you have the (iron) arse for it I would also recommend dropping down to Greymouth via the coast road (on a nice day) and ripping back up the valley to Reefton and through the Rahu saddle to Springs Junction. Home from there.

If thats too much for a day, find a backpackers (often like $20) or the BBH which is $90 Bed, Dinner and Breakfast. Be warned though. You can spend that much in beer.

ACTUALLY... ;)

The room is $90, incl dinner and breakfast. I paid $103 in total. I had 2 diet cokes, 2 pints of Miners Dark, 3 DOUBLE southern comforts with lemonade and a slice of Carrot Cake. So all that for an extra $13 bucks! My reckoning is, if you drink $90 worth of Miners Dark, you'll be very very merry indeed

Hey Feral. I have to be honest, I don't remember seeing you (but then again, I was the "townie"/tourist :P). Thats yet another example of how passing KB'ers easily miss each other...

Catch you next time mate.
Dave.

PS: Thanks, and do ya think that "engine" in the visitors centre would fit in a motorbike? I'm looking at building a track bike  It runs on $1 coins too, about even with petrol what with all the price hikes!

Thanks Steve, nice pics... I'm still amazed at how you take pics on the trot haha. I guess it comes down to easy accessibility...

But, why didn't you post the pics of me draggin my knee, and the high chair wheelie I did? At the very least, you could have put the 219m stoppie pic up, that was one of my best... :wari:

Thanks,
Dave.
