Thought I should quickly introduce myself before my forum whoring begins. I'm an engineering student at Auckland Uni (seems like theres heaps of us here). I'm pretty new to the whole riding thing, and picked up my first bike, a 1991 ZXR250c last Sunday. Had a good ride home - went from Glenfield to Papatoetoe via Whenuapai, Massey, Avondale and Mt Wellington :) It was a good way to build up confidence.
Anyway, enjoying the whole riding thing an awful lot so far, very quickly picking up confidence but trying to maintain cautious because being a bit old for a learner rider (25) I'm a lot more concerned about the possibility of dying than I was when I started driving.
Don't have any good pics of my bike yet but I'll see about getting some soon.
So yes, hello bikers.

just thought I should add a thank you to the government, getting 5 years of tax refunds and my course related costs payments within a couple of weeks of each other funded much of the purchase of the bike :)

If they taxed you properly you wouldn't need those refunds! :bleh:

Slyer - very true, but I like to think of it as mandatory savings :) Hoping that the return for year ending 2009 will get me a new jacket
Rob - haven't signed up yet, not sure about the steep membership fee

hahaha, yeah I was reading that thread - unfortunately because vehicle dynamics is a keen interest of mine, I have a reasonable idea of where the possible/impossible boundary lies :) (provided it's something nice and simple like braking in a straight line)
wbks - yep, I've been in the team for 4 years, we've had a huge number of bike riders/KB'ers in the team in that time. FWIW, it's called Formula SAE - our website is www.fsae.co.nz

Ok, I've seen it before but couldn't really remember what it was called and the last vid on youtube I watched of a similar car built by uni students in the UK for a world wide competition was (or atleast they called it) college cup, so I assumed it was that.
What do you have to do to do fsae? Whats your part in it? sorry for all the questions, its just interesting to me haha

Technically to be in an FSAE team you just need to go to a university that has a team and be enrolled in a degree. Realistically, you need to be doing engineering (we have a few others in the team that look after finance, marketing etc).
My role in the team is co-chief engineer (I look after the vehicle dynamics side of things and another guy does powertrain). Last year I was chief engineer, year before I was team leader. I don't mind the questions, this thing is basicaly my life at present and I always enjoy talking about it
skidMark - who were your buddies? Johan, Jeremy, Craig?

The thing I was watching, they said atleast one of their team members/students a year goes on to an F1 team or other racing class. Is that what you're going to try to do?

The next event we're likely to attend is the Auckland domain hillclimb, which is in early May I think. We have 2 former team members working for an F1 team, an heaps in local motorsport teams, especially Formula Toyotas. My ambitions are probably a bit more entreprenurial than joining an F1 team.
skidmark - that SCC visit was quite a while ago, either before I joined or not long after I did, either way I don't remember anyone having a GSXR back then

Welcome, and good choice of bike. i started on one of those a while back, and I remember too well the feelings of being a complete novice, especially when riding out in the country at night...very overwhelming. I might suggest a few track days and you will speed ahead in learning this whole new riding thing.
Hope to see you on a ride!

Ok, I thought about this a bit and I have no idea what you mean when you say "id recommend something to the nass on Wednesday nights"
Cheers to the rest of you for the welcomes - hopefully I'll make it out to something sometime

NASS = North Auckland Street Skills.
It runs every Wednesday, and is a free meet up with other newbie bikers, and a few seasoned pro's to teach tactics, explain theory, and run drills.
Try and search for "NASS" if you're interested. Quite good.
And welcome along.

yep, still got it and use it on days that I'm not riding - it's quite nice having a fun/fast car and a bike to choose between each day - don't have anything practical but practical transport is for old men :)
