So, spent the whole day yesterday putting in the dynajet, took a bit of figuring out, as I was sprouting mechanical bones in my body that have previously not existed.

Took it for a ride last night, seems to have opened up the lower ranges quite considerably, which is nice, but it doesn't seem to have done anything for my top ranges.

So the next plan is for a new exhaust. I'm thinking cycleworks, as they have a nice klx300 kit that fits on a 250, and its NZ, and we all like to buy nz made aye? Anyone dealt with them before? Good exhausts?

Also, how do you tell if your bike is running lean? Any tell tale signs? I took the snorkel out to allow more air in and to balance up the increase of fuel, but I think it may have gone too far?

Easiest way to tell is to take it for a good ride then pull the spark plug out. The plug colour and whether it looks damp or not will tell you how it's running overall.

My Haynes manual has pictures of plugs under different conditions and there's bound to be info on the net that describes what to look for.

Well done Sam - glad you saw some improvement after your hard work!

With the Cycleworks pipe on my DR, it smells like its running rich to me(and EddieB thought it may be on our ride last weekend). Just got her back today so tomorrow may have a look at it more closely as I have no idea if anything has been done to the airbox yet, and as for the carb - sheesh that'll be a challenge for me. Actually with the backfiring etc etc am sure something needs doing to it! (yeah like puttin the stock exhaust back on would be good!)

Stick your finger in the pipe and see how much soot you get.
Should only be a light smear and not black.

PS. Not while it's hot if you like your fingerprints :D

They are a tad OTT on mods tho - I mean sheesh they might as well just buy a different bike FFS!!!!!:gob:

haha, yea, to a certain extent... then there's the whole idea about 'make it into what you want it to be'. Have to say, it'd be very rewarding being able to stand back and say 'That's what I want my bike to be. And I got it to that stage'.

Yeah I DO get that aspect of it! :2thumbsup

Is there anything you HAVEN'T farkled yet?

BTW, checked my cycleworks pipe this am before little ride - light mark on finger, def NO black shit coming off easily onto finger! :2thumbsup

Does backfire alot tho. I'm new to this aftermarket pipe malarky, anything I should be doing/checking Fran?

It will backfire with an aftermarket pipe.
The only way of reducing it is chainging the pilot/piolt air jets.
It's still there but not as much.

Cheers Fran, I suspected as much, but the info is appreciated. :niceone:

To bigger or smaller?

Dunno what carb access is like on a DR but changing the jets themselves once you have access is no big deal Dave.

2 bigger on the pilot and 1 bigger on the pilot air.

So what would cause a standard bike with standard jets & settings to pop? This is my R100 PD.

When I got the PD the pilot mixture was set way rich, factory is 3/4 - 1 turns out of the mixture screw, it was 2.5 out one side and 2 5/8's the other.
It idled smoothly but had what I thought was a miss about about 2500 revs and I was investigating that when I found the pilot mixture setting. I guess it was so rich it was drowning at 2500rpm.

I've recently set the pilot air mixture back to 3/4 turn out and it now it pops at idle and very low speed but runs very smoothly as soon as you are off idle right through the range. The idle is smooth though, the motor isn't lumpy.

Dunno about the R100 but the DR will pop even stock but as the muffler is so quiet you can't really hear it.

Only happens on closed throttle. Even a slight crack open and it's gone.

So what would cause a standard bike with standard jets & settings to pop?Emissions-induced lean out at idle. Fuel mixture leans off below that required to burn, fire goes out, raw fuel down exhaust, fuel mix richens slightly so it burns again, ignites the stuff in the exhaust, repeat... pop pop pop on the overrun!

Aftermarket exhausts tend to be a) louder and b) leaner (on std jetting), so they both cause more popping and let you hear it better.

Only happens on closed throttle. Even a slight crack open and it's gone.Following on from the above, that's because then the fuel mix is now sufficient/consistent enough to keep the fire burning.

Which then means a slightly higher idle speed will likely reduce it. My 640A is supposed to idle at 1500rpm but it works A LOT better at 1600-1650rpm. It's enough to noticeably affect the low speed engine braking (-ve, or +ve as it encourages you to ride the bike not nanna it) stall resistance (+ve) and throttle-on response (+ve) but the emissions people won't be so happy, 1650 is 10% up on std. Some of the things done to satisfy the emissions people are not necessarily in the rider's best interests.
