Kiwi Josh Coppins was 6th overall after suffering a hard crash in qualifying that clipped his wings a bit.

"Everything was looking rosy yesterday but then I went down hard. I winded myself, hit my head and picked up a few bruises. It meant I also had a bad gate-pick. It was very different today of course. I passed a few guys, got stuck a couple of times and kept trying to do laps and came out with sixth. I think I got a 'get out of jail free' card yesterday and was lucky to walk away and then be able to race and take sixth. Perhaps I should have stopped for goggles but I was content at the time with sixth and maybe that was a mistake. There are some guys who you'd expect to be going for the championship that did not score many points today so I feel sixth was OK." Coppins added.

Riding without goggles in that shite! Lucky he isn't blind.

Josh Coppins takes top step of the podium in Bulgaria:rockon:

Kiwi motocross star, Josh Coppins , has traveled to sunny Bulgaria this past weekend for round 2 of the FIM Motocross World Championship. After the rain and deep mud in Italy a week ago, the Monster Energy Yamaha racer, was especially happy to be greeted by a perfectly prepared race circuit and weather conditions in Sevlievo.

Saturday’s qualifying race saw a super energized ‘Lizzard’ back on form. Having to fight back from a mediocre start, exiting corner 1 in 9th, Josh was on the gas as he battled bar to bar with team mate David Philippaerts. At the end of the intense 20 minute and 2 lap race Coppins had pushed his way through to 6th

Coppins was ready for heat 1 on Sunday and when the gate dropped his distinctive black and white race gear could be seen at the front of the charging pack as he launched towards the first corner. Completing lap 1 in 3rd position the New Zealander was in a great position, and in no time he pushed himself passed Max Nagl and into 2nd position. In his groove, the Coppins rode a smooth race until the end of the heat, crossing the finish line in 2nd position and claiming 22 valuable championship points.

Heat 2 was yet another great show up front, with Coppins positioning himself in the heat of the battle. He hounded German, Max Nagl with both riders setting a blistering pace. With 10 minutes to go, it was Coppins who took over the lead as he made his way past Nagl, however a fast charging Barragan in turn took moved to the front a lap later. This left a charging pack behind Coppins as he was trying his best to maintain his second position. At the end of a nail biting race Coppins crossed the finish line with another 2nd position, giving him the overall win for the day and putting him just one point off the lead in the MX 1 World Motocross Championship.

“This weekend it came together for me,” explained the delighted Kiwi. “I have been training really hard and my fitness is good – This has given me the confidence to ride hard. I was not the fastest rider out there today, but my starts were great and I rode very smooth, kept out of trouble, and got the results.”

Coppins will return to his home base in Belgium where he will have very little time to rest before heading to Turkey for round 3 next weekend.

Tough Turkish MX GP for Josh Coppins:

A historical first visit of the FIM Motocross championship to Turkey has seen Josh Coppins battle with the newly built Hezarfen race circuit in Istanbul. The Yamaha Monster Energy racer struggled to find form all weekend but did his best to remain in the MX1 title hunt.

A slow jump at the start gate of the first moto left Coppins having to take some risks in the first few turns. It paid off for the Kiwi as he emerged in 7th however a string of inconsistent laps relegated ‘The Lizzard’ outside of the top ten. Coppins finally settled and moved his way back up the standings to 8th but could not salvage any positions by the end of the race.

Knowing how important a good start would be in a stacked field, Coppins once again made the most of the first few corners in what seemed to be a carbon copy of race 1. The New Zealander made it as far as 5th before losing his rhythm and having to settle for 8th position again.

“It’s been one of the those days where you just have to concede, do the best you can and look forward to the next few races and get back into the title hunt. I didn’t gel with the track at all and with such a strong field of riders, 8th was the best I had in me. I battled to find the speed all weekend and although I could put in a hot lap it was difficult to string them together for the entire race. I’m looking forward to Valkenswaard as it will be a change of surface and it’s somewhat of a home GP for me being close to my home base in Belgium” commented a disappointed Coppins.

The ‘Eurocircuit’ will see a drastic change in underground as round four of the fifteen round series will take place on the 25-26th of April in the Valkenswaard sand, close to Eindhoven.

Coppins racks up steady points in Valkenswaard

Josh Coppins made a short trip up the road from his Belgian base to Round 4 of the World Motocross Championship which took place in Valkenswaard in the Netherlands this past weekend.

Racing started well for Josh on Saturday as a good start in the qualifying heat put him in the leading pack rounding up lap 1. Riding a smooth race ‘Lizzard’ brought home his YZ450FM in 3rd position, giving a great gate pick for Sunday’s main races.

As heat 1 got underway on Sunday it was hard to tell who would come out the first corner in front as a group of riders went down in the first turn mayhem. Luckily Coppins came through un-scathed and in 7th position. He battled back and forth jockeying for position with a number of different world class MX1 riders as they all battled it out for vital points in this championship that stands wide open. At the end of a tough race 1 ‘Lizzard’ crossed the finish line jump in 10th position, somewhat disappointed with his result.

Heat 2 was an even better start for the flying Kiwi as his distinctive black Yamaha rounded up the opening lap in 4th place as Steve Ramon hounded his back wheel. An epic battle ensued with a hand full of riders fighting for every last second around the rough sandy circuit. Doing his best to maintain position Coppins was able to hold on for a 5th position at the end of the grueling 35 minute and 2 lap race.

“Today was disappointing for me.” admitted a frustrated Coppins. “I was not able to push hard because I am not physically at 100% and still need to reach my full potential. I had to just ride for points rather than being able to race hard for a win. That disappoints me. In the coming weeks I hope to get myself back to 100% again and then I know I can do the whole team justice.”

Coppins will contend the opening round of the Belgian MX Championship next Friday before heading to Portugal a week later for round 5 of the FIM MX world championship.

Heads up - Portugal this weekend.

And from youthsteam.org a DK interview

New Zealander Darryl King is well known in Europe. It was back in the 1990s that King battled the likes of Joel Smets, Andrea Bartolini and his brother Shayne King in the tough 500cc class.

While this era wasn't like the 1980s era of Thorpe, Jobe, Geboers and Malherbe, it was still a strong 500cc class and one of many good guys. King was one of the nice guys in the paddock, but he had a fighter heart and was always close to winning a World title from his biggest rival Smets.

King was good enough to finish in second place twice behind Smets and was also picked in the factory Husqvarna team alongside Stefan Everts in 2000. If you could pick a handful of riders who deserved to win a World title, then Darryl King would be in that five.

Darryl decided to return to action for the FIM Veterans World Cup, and has so far competed in rounds in Faenza and Valkenswaard. Unfortunately due to injuries and bad luck he never got to show his real speed, although he still came with that determination and fire of days gone past. We decided to ask him some questions about his return to the World scenario.

Q: Darryl, so how have you found being back in a World series?

King: I have always loved it. I wanted to return and visit Belgium, where I lived for so many years during my Grand Prix career. I visited the Lommel circuit when I was here, and also trained with Josh Coppins. It is nice to follow how Josh is doing and while I don't always sit up and watch the Freecaster coverage, but I keep and eye on the results and watch what Josh is doing. I also like to keep and eye on a rider like Ken De Dycker who has improved so much in his career and is now a real challenger for the World title.

Q: Tell us about Faenza, your return to action?

King: On the Saturday in practice I hurt my ribs, after that it didn't go so well for me. I should have been able to finish in third or fourth, but due to my injury it didn't happen.

Q: You finished second in the world a couple of times and enjoyed a good career in the World Championship. How do you see the series now, some ten years after your career ended?

King: It is of course a lot more professional now. I can't say too much about how it is run, because I haven't seen too much of the races, just Faenza and Valkenswaard.

Q: What was the highlight of your career?

King: I would say my win in Namur in 1997. It is such a difficult circuit. It was also the season that I finished second to Joel Smets and I really wanted to beat him badly, but he was just quicker on the hard-pack tracks.

Q: What did you do after your GP career ended?

King: I rode six years in Australia, until 2007 actually, then I raced in New Zealand. I am now working with Leatt neck Braces and CTI knee braces, and I also have my own Yamaha motocross team in New Zealand. I also still race a little.

Coppins looks for form in Portuguese MX GP.

Kiwi MX sensation, Josh Coppins, along with the Yamaha Monster Energy Motocross Team travelled to Portugal this weekend eager to get his 2009 World Championship campaign back on track.

In front of the friendly Agueda crowds ‘Lizzard’ soon showed he was there for business as he rocketed out the gate in the Saturday qualifying race to grab an early lead. Coppins rode a great race with an aggressive style bringing him home in 2nd position, giving a great gate pick for Sunday and the confidence to go with it.

As the gate dropped for the first MX1 moto, Coppins, lost his gate advantage in the first turn by running wide and pushed hard to make up positions on the first lap.A small crash set the New Zealander back a few positions as he had to regroup and come through the pack.Putting his head down, Coppins plugged away at the riders in front and managed to pull through to 7th spot by the end of the moto.

Coppins was sure to make the best of his start in moto 2 and looked like he would grab the hole-shot however team-mate David Philippaerts managed to sneak around the outside with Belgian Clement Desalle making a move a few turns later.Coppins settled into fourth spot where he stayed throughout the race with a last lap charge putting him right in Desalle’s wheel at the checkered flag.

“I felt like I had the speed this weekend to put in a good result however the first moto sort of caught me out when I crashed on the second lap.It was tough to come back with the pace being so hot.I was happier with the second moto and with my speed but I still see some improvements to come in the next few races.I have chosen to stay down South before Spain next week and hope to get some good riding in” commented Coppins.

Climbing a spot in the championship tables, Coppins will travel to Bellpuig in Spain next weekend for Round 6 of the FIM Motocross World championship.

Cairoli is fitting in quite nicely in the mx1 class... some one better start pegging him back, before he opens up that lead too much.

4th on the board for Coppins,8 pionts behind 3rd.

A tough day for Coppins in Catalunya

Round 7 of the MX1 Motocross World Championship headed to sunny Spain this weekend where, Yamaha Monster Energy racer, Josh Coppins, was eager to get himself back in the championship hunt having put in some hard work over the past weeks.Coppins arrived at the Bellpuig circuit with increased confidence in his physical condition which was sure to be tested in the hot conditions.

In the Saturday qualifying race ‘Lizzard’ looked good as he closed up the opening lap in a solid 3rd position which he held through to the finish, giving a prime gate pick for Sunday’s two 35 minute and 2 lap Grand Prix races.

With 20.000 enthusiastic spectators focusing on the starting line for moto 1, Coppins got a good jump out the gate and ran into turn one in the top 5. Racing hard on the opening laps the Kiwi quickly clawed himself up into the third position. Following a hard fought battle with both Desalle and Philippaerts, Coppins would eventually finish the race in 4th place gaining more vital MX1 World Championship points.

Moto 2 would once again see another good jump for Coppins out the gate however he lost the hole-shot exiting the first turn and rounded up the first lap in 4th position. Showing early speed ‘Lizzard’ pulled up to 3rd position on the dry choppy circuit racing however as the race wore on Coppins was not able to keep his initial pace going. The New Zealander lost his race rhythm and a number of positions, eventually crossing the finish line in 8th position to claim 6th overall for the GP while maintaining 4th position in the MX1 World Championship standings.

A disappointed Coppins commented on his race day: “My speed in both races was good at the start, but I really battled then as the race ran on. In that 2nd moto I got into 3rd and was happy, but I just made too many mistakes and kept dropping further and further down the pack. The 2nd moto is one I am glad is behind me and I just need to focus on the next Grand Prix now.”

Coppins will travel to the UK next for Round 7 of the MX1 Motocross World Championships taking place at Mallory Park on the 31st May.

Coppins just misses out on podium at British GP

Josh Coppins and the Yamaha Monster Energy Team turned out at Mallory Park, England, this past weekend with the full intention of standing on the podium. For a refreshing change to his usual Black and White THOR race gear, which the fans have become accustomed to, ‘Lizzard’ decided to run some more colorful livery which looked great as he circulated around the spectacular circuit.

In the Saturday qualifier Coppins got a great start and ran up in the leading trio for the duration of the race. Crossing the finish line in 3rd position the likeable Kiwi would benefit from a great gate pick for Sunday.

As Heat 1 got underway on Sunday Coppins got a good start and ran up front with the leaders, as the world’s top MX1 riders all pushed hard for the vital points in the extremely close championship standings. With a number of position changes throughout the fast paced race, ‘Lizzard’ eventually crossed the finish in 5th place, racking up vital points.

Heat 2 was yet another solid start for Coppins, rounding up the opening lap in 6th position. Yet again the pace was intense out front, and with another strong ride ‘Lizzard’ was in 4th position at the finish, giving a 4th overall for the day and keeping him firmly in contention for the MX1 World Title.

"Not too bad today and I felt better than the last few weeks; there was an improvement here and hopefully I will be able to get back on the box in France. The first moto was pretty eventful because a rock hit my left collarbone and that was pretty sore and I also broke some spokes on my front wheel when I clashed with Desalle. The wheel was a bit wobbly and I got some arm-pump so the front group got away. There were some good points about today."

With just 57 points separating the top 7 riders, the MX1 World Championship remains wide open heading into Round 7 of the championship in France next weekend.

I got a funny feeling Josh is just trying to stay consistent this year, he could win the title just from finishing in the top 6 at all rounds. There are so many good riders this year gunning for the podium, causing alot of desperate riding to taking place. Antonio is a win it or bin it type of chap, Barragan a bit the same also.

Coppins maintains 4th in MX1 World Championship standings after French MX GP

Heading into Round 8 of the MX1 World Championship in France this weekend, Yamaha Monster Energy racer, Josh Coppins, seemedconfident that he could capitalize on a strong result to keep himself in the hunt for the MX1 title, however the Kiwi left Ernee a little disillusioned but still fourth in the MX1 points chase.

In Saturday’s qualifying race Coppins was quick out the gate, only just missing out on the hole-shot as the pack rounded the first corner. As ever, the pace was very fast out front, and with a solid ride ‘Lizzard’ qualified in 4th position to give a great gate pick for the French Grand Prix.

On Sunday morning a torrential shower drenched the hard pack Ernee circuit as the first MX1 moto lined up on the gates. When the gate dropped ‘Lizzard’ was fairly quick of the mark as he powered his black Yamaha YZ450FM around the opening lap. Settling into 6th position early in the race and riding very smooth throughout, Coppins finished the opening moto in 6th position.

The 2nd moto was a better start for the Kiwi as he headed through the first corner in 4th position. With a tight battle up front throughout the entire 35 minute and 2 lap race, Coppins defended his fourth place until ten minutes was left on the clock. He finally lost his battle to Cairoli, Philippaerts and Desalle to cross the line in 7th position, giving him a 6th overall for the day.

"I got tired and didn't have any power at the end; there was nothing left in the tank. I still have the same problem as the last few GPs and I am not sure why because my strength is normally my strong point. So I am struggling a little bit at the moment and need to get it fixed." admitted the disappointed Kiwi.

Coppins will head back to Belgium for a round of the Belgian MX champs next weekend at the former GP circuit of Kester, before trekking to east to Germany for round 9 of 15 in the FIM MX World championship series in Teutschenthal the following week.

Josh Coppins on podium in Kester

Josh Coppins took part in Round 2 of the closely contested Belgian Motocross Championship yesterday, held in Kester. Changing weather conditions tested the skills of a handful of the MX1 Grand Prix stars, with Monster Energy Yamaha star Coppins riding consistently in all 3 heats to take 3rd overall for the day.

In Heat 1 ‘Lizzard’ got a great start as he chased De Dycker around the opening lap, with Clement Desalle hot on his heels. In strong form at the moment, Desalle got past both Coppins and De Dycker, putting Coppins into 3rd where he remained until the end of the race.

In Heat 2 it was a string of GP stars up front in the opening laps as all the riders fought hard for position. Coppins managed to get past Cairoli and Leok as he pulled himself through into 3rd position. With De Dycker and Desalle out front, ‘Lizzard’ rode another smooth race to cross the line in 3rd place.

Heat 3 was a bad start for the New Zealander as he closed the opening lap in 10th position. Wasting no time at all Coppins quickly blasted his way through to 4th position, where he ultimately finished the race, giving him 3rd overall for the day.

Next weekend Josh Coppins heads to Teutschenthal in Germany to take part in Round 9 of the MX1 World Championship.

Good result for belgian champs but more points needed for the big game. Must be tremendously frustrating. Coppins finds new speed at Teutschenthal MX GP.

Yamaha Monster Energy’s, Josh Coppins, has narrowly missed out on a podium finish at Round 9 of the World Motocross Championship this weekend, in Teutschenthal, Germany. After winning the 2008 edition with a stellar double victory ‘Lizzard’ had his sights set on a strong ride at the challenging hard-pack Talkessel circuit.

In the Saturday qualifier, Coppins got a reasonable start as he sat in 8th position on the opening lap. Held up by Billy McKenzie on lap 2, he lost time on the leaders, however once he passed the Scotsman,‘Lizzard’ did his best to close in the competition, crossing the finish line in 6th place to qualify for a good pick on the gate for Sunday.

With overnight showers changing track conditions for the competitors, Coppins still rocketed out the gate in moto 1 , sliding through the first turn in 2nd position behind local favourite Maxi Nagl, with a charging Antonio Cairoli just behind in 3rd. For the opening 15 minutes Coppins and Cairoli battled it out for track position, with Cairoli eventually getting the advantage after Coppins stalled his machine. The Kiwi quickly recovered to ride a fantastic race, crossing the finish line in 3rd position.

A reasonable start in Moto 2 would see the likeable New Zealander head through turn 1 in 6th position, charging as hard as ever. Coppins battled bar to bar with Belgian, Clement Desalle and fellow Yamaha Monster Energy team-mate, Philippaerts, with the trio jockeying for track position lap after lap. On lap 12 Coppins and Philippaerts collided, leaving Coppins on the deck and dropped down to 7th position by the time he got going again. Coppins set a blazing pace as he fought back hard, re-passing Desalle and closing onto the back wheel of Philippaerts to cross the line in 5th position, only just missing out on an overall podium as he tied points with Philippaerts and Dedycker.

“There is still something left in this old dog” smiled a content Coppins after the race. “I was happy with my speed in both races but in the final moto I proved that I still have it in me.I passed Desalle on the last lap, and I’m sure with some more time I would have had Philippaerts. I feel like I have discovered a new fight in me and look forward to the upcoming races to mix it up in the championship”

Coppins will head to Kegums in Latvia which will welcome the GP tour next weekend.

Yeah' With Barragan out for a while the pressure has eased a bit (by no means alot though).
Nagl is on fire at the moment and De dycker is a bit like Josh this year, Just needs a break (hopefully Cairoli's leg!)
Josh can outpace Phillaperts and appears physically stronger than him ...

Out of the whole MX1 field Josh is the most consistent finisher.. now he needs to up the pace slightly.. His tactics are probably very complex, been watching the lines of the rest of the field closely and now he can formulate a fair idea of each riders strengths and weaknesses on any given track/day/conditions.

Monster Yamaha rider Josh Coppins is enjoying his racing in 2009. Despite not feeling that great on the bike he knows that this might be his last season and he is making the most out of it. Trying to enjoy his last trip to places like Germany, or Sweden, where he has had success in the past.

Fourth in the World MX1 Championship points after nine rounds means that he is still in with a chance to win a World Title before he heads back home to New Zealand, although now 64 points behind series leader Antonio Cairoli the New Zealander will find it hard work and it will take some luck to catch the MX1 series leader. Coppins though has never been a quitter and isn’t about to give up now.

Q: Josh, has it been a struggle so far this year?

Coppins: It isn't a struggle at all I am enjoying my racing and of course I am trying to win, and enjoy my racing along the way. It could be my last year, I am still in with a hunt and I might come good at the end of the year. I haven't been that good this year, and the last races I have been fading and had a lack of energy, so hopefully I can step it up and have a chance.

Q: But are you disappointed in your standing in the series?

Coppins: I am not disappointed because I have enjoyed coming to the race and I am trying to do that because it could be my last season here. I want to enjoy it for sure. I sort of come to the races with my family now and I am enjoying my practicing and I am practicing with a lot of guys now, so overall it's been fun. Q: What has been the problem with your conditions; you have faded in some races lately haven’t you?

Coppins: I have been struggling with fitness, just some health problems and I have made a mistake and didn’t get my blood checked enough, it is totally my own fault and after racing for so long I should have known better. I need to get organized and try and be strong for the last part of the season.

Q: Is it difficult being a father and a racer?

Coppins: It is difficult being a father and a racer. My goals have changes, I mean I am still trying to go for the championship, but my priority isn’t winning it anymore. I mean anyone who becomes a father will tell you, it’s a life changing experience. I am trying to do my best for my team, and sponsors and friends.

Q: Does being a father take away the edge a little maybe?

Coppins: It is possible, I mean I don’t think so, nothing was missing in 2007 and in 2008 I was too busy worrying about my future, which was silly to worry about that. Although I am not leading and it’s looking tough to win it, it is still possible and anything can happen, as we saw in 2007 with me losing it.

News From Josh:

Hi there,

The last GP in Germany went well for me – it’s the first time in a while that i have felt strong both motos! I can’t tell you how great that felt to fight to the end. I’ really looking forward to this weekend in Latvia...

We have had a good week’s training. I went to Olmen and did some testing with Gunter from KYB - Technical Touch). We tried a few different suspension settings and came away happy.

Check out my web store for the new “One more year” DVD that Alex Rankin put together for me: I think he did an awesome job so get yourself a copy and check it out.

Today I went trials riding with Jamie, Scott and Jake Nichols who rides MX2. He has been staying for a while and it’s amazing how much he has improved while being here. I can imagine being in his shoes: You see things when you arrive and you think “I’ll never be able do that” or “there is no way I can keep up with these nutters”, but by the end of the stay you are doing things you never dreamed of attempting... needless to say after a few big crashes in the trials bikes we called it a day as both Jake and I want to be in one piece for Latvia! Things are busy right now as we have three GP’s in a row... I like it that way especially now that I’m feeling strong.

Well that’s it for now, I’ll check in next week.

Cheers,

JC

Coppins on the podium in Latvia

Josh Coppins looks to be back on form as he powered his Monster Energy Yamaha through the Kegums sand to take 3rd overall in the first ever Latvian Motocross Grand Prix. After putting on an invigorating display last week in the German GP, to tie for 3rd place, ‘Lizzard’ arrived in Latvia this weekend self-assured of getting up on the podium.

In Saturday’s short qualifying race, Coppins got a reasonable jump out the gate, heading through the first turn just inside the top 10. With the top 5 riders all still within striking distance of this year’s MX1 championship everyone was pushing as hard as possible to get the best possible gate pick for the two Sunday GP races. Racing hard through the pack Coppins clawed his way into 6th place, securing a good starting position for Sunday.

As the gate dropped for the first moto on Sunday the crowd watched in awe as the MX1 ‘field of stars’ launched themselves into the first corner. It was de Dycker who got the early advantage, with Nagl right on him. Coppins at this point was in 7th position fighting hard for track position with World Championship leader Cairoli. By lap 4 the determined Kiwi had managed to get up into 5th place, before losing the battle to Cairoli and dropping back into 6th. The next person in the ‘crosshairs’ was team mate Philippaerts, Coppins wasted no time in hunting him down and eventually getting past. ‘Lizzard’ continued his forward momentum to the very end, crossing the chequered flag in 4th position.

With the track getting really rough throughout the day and the temperature rising, race 2 was going to be a show of strength, and an ultra-fit Coppins knew these conditions would give him the upper hand on many of the riders. With a slightly better start this time, Coppins rounded up the opening lap in 5th position, as he settled into a good rhythm. On lap 5 ‘Lizzard’ started to turn up the pressure on the other riders, at a point where all except Cairoli looked to be tiring. Coppins looked fresh as he closed down and passed the competition one by one. By lap 14 Coppins closed in on Desalle and made the pass for 3rd, then just one lap later did the same to de Dycker to take over 2nd position and put himself on the podium for the Latvian GP.

“I enjoyed racing here in Latvia today” smiled Coppins. “My goal was to improve from Teutschenthal last weekend and I managed to do that today. I’m feeling strong and I know I have it in me to end off the championship with a fight. There are some tough tracks coming up which are going to sort the men from the boys – we saw it today as well. I’m looking forward to Sweden as well. I have one there before and will be focusing on a podium spot once again.”

Next weekend Josh Coppins and the Yamaha Monster Energy Team head to Sweden for Round 11 of the 15 round MX1 World Championship.

Getting better results in qualifying is always a good sign.

UDDEVALLA (SWEDEN), 4 July 2009 – Under a bright and hot sun the qualifying races for the Swedish GP ended with the pole positions of Nagl and Goncalves making it a KTM one two.

De Dycker was second behind a very fast Nagl as Coppins completed the MX1 top three. In the MX2 class Goncalves dominated ahead of a dangerous Roczen and Monni.

JK Datch’s Leonce took the lead after the gate dropped and gave the start to the MX1 qualifying heat. The Frenchman, who put in his first ever laps at the lead in a World Championship heat, did not last long in first place as Coppins and Nagl put tons of pressure on him.

Coppins was the first to move past but the Yamaha Monster Energy Motocross man lost the battle with Nagl, moving to the lead and pulling away while Coppins remained in second.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Nagl took the eventual victory with an advantage of 4.4 seconds and secured his second season’s pole, finishing ahead of De Dycker.

The latter moved close to Coppins and battle it out with the Kiwi until he moved past. Teka Suzuki WMX1’s De Dycker opened up a gap and secured the runner up spot while Coppins was forced to ride strong in the final laps as Cairoli was coming closer and closer.

The Italian of Yamaha Red Bull De Carli finished a close fourth to Coppins. Cairoli came dramatically close in the last laps but could not move past eventually.

Coppins loses out in Sweden

Josh Coppins has come away from Round 11 of the MX1 World Motocross Championship in Sweden this past weekend having lost ground on the leaders, as he now sits in 5th position in the overall standings. The Yamaha Monster Energy rider has been feeling stronger and stronger over the past few weeks and seemed set to continue his progress on the mixed terrain circuit of Uddevalla however a sprained ankle in moto1 and technical problems in moto 2 resulted in a different outcome for the Kiwi.

Saturday’s qualifying race started positively for Coppins as he only just missed out on the hole-shot to Nagl. Chasing hard ‘Lizzard’ was looking good as he kept the pressure on the KTM rider out in front until the mid way point, when Nagl then started to edge away. A charging de Dycker also managed to squeeze out the ‘Kiwi’ in the closing stages, relegating Coppins to 3rd place.

Sunday morning dawned a little cooler than the Saturday, however that did not put off the 22.000 thousand spectators that turned out, lining the hillside to cheer on their idols. The gate dropped for the opening MX1 race, and as the dust settled on the first turn it was Nagl out front being closely tracked by de Dycker, Desalle, Coppins (4th) and Philippaerts. The reigning world champ was all over the back of Coppins for the opening four laps before managing to get by. Coppins hit a hole after he landed from the uphill ski jump and sprained his ankle as his foot lost grip on the foot peg. He would have to battle with pain and with Antonio Cairoli who had been fighting his way through the pack following a poor start. Cairoli slipped by, relegating Coppins to 6th place, where he ultimately crossed the finish line.

Hoping that pain killers would relieve some of the discomfort Coppins was aiming for a good start in the 2nd moto, however a technical problem while selecting gears hampered Coppins from the start and throughout the moto. The determined ‘Kiwi’ still pushed harder than try and fight his way through the MX1 field. By the end of the fast paced 35 minute and 2 lap race Coppins had managed to get his number 6 Yamaha machine up into 7th position, giving a 7th overall for the day.

“I haven’t had much luck here over the last few years” commented Coppins “The ankle is pretty swollen now but should be ok after a few days of rest and icing. When I hit the hole my foot came off the foot peg and I kind of ran over it with the back wheel. Although it bothered me in the second moto I thought I could have done better but I had some trouble with selecting gears and kept on hitting false neutral which was quite scary over some of the big jumps.”

The next event for Coppins will be Round 3 of the Belgian Championship taking place in Nismes on the 19th July.

Josh Coppins shows good speed in Nismes

Yamaha Monster Energy racer, Josh Coppins, has taken part in Round 3 of the 6 round Belgian Championship today, held on the hard pack circuit of Nismes in the very South of the country.

In the first of the three short motos, ‘Lizzard’ got a flyer out the gates, accelerating his Yamaha YZ450FM towards the first turn alongside Belgian favourites, Desalle and De Dycker. Dropping down the hill and into turn 2, the New Zealander out braked himself, running wide and losing a handful of positions. Coppins soon got into his rhythm though and before long was charging through to try and catch the leaders. At this stage it was De Dycker out front being hounded by Desalle with Ramon a little further back in 3rd place. Coppins caught and managed to pass Ramon, but moments later made a mistake allowing Ramon back past. For the final laps Coppins charged hard but was not able to re-pass Ramon again and crossed the line in 4th place.

In the 2nd moto it was not a good start for Coppins as he head through the first turn around mid pack. Quickly getting through most of the pack on the opening laps Coppins soon sat in 4th place with a charging Ramon not far off in 5th. Lap after lap Coppins and Ramon battled it out, but towards the end of the race the extreme fitness of Coppins started to pay off, and he managed to get a small gap on Ramon. On the final lap the Yamaha Monster Energy rider was able to go one better as he made his move into 3rd place, where he crossed the line.

In the final moto of the day Coppins had a great jump out the gate, but was hit by another rider going through turn two which left the disappointed ‘Kiwi’ on the floor. Getting back up and on the gas Coppins screamed his way through the field, posting some blistering lap times on his way back through to 5th place, where he crossed the finish line.

“My riding was good today, I was very fast on the bike, I just had bad starts. The way I am riding right now I know if I get the start I have the speed and fitness to run up front. I’ll be focusing on my sand riding leading up to Lommel and look forward to getting a good result close to home.” commented Coppins.

Coppins scored a solid 4th in first moto. Not sure i'll be able to keep my eyes open for 2nd moto but he's riding bloody well.

EDIT: So from what I gathered (I had laptop on while i was in bed and was kinda dozing off haha) he got 10th in the 2nd moto which put in him 6th overall for the weekend. My video stream was useless and kept pausing for some reason.

Coppins salvages a 6th overall in Lommel GP

New Zealand’s Grand Prix motocross star, Josh Coppins, only had to make a short drive down the road from his Belgian home this weekend to take part in Round 12 of the MX1 World Championship. Having always been a strong ‘sand’ rider, Coppins was looking forward to this GP of Limburg, held at Lommel’s notoriously rough sand circuit.

Saturday’s qualifying race was very good for ‘Lizzard’ as he powered his Yamaha YZ450FM through from 7th on lap one up to 3rd position by the end of the 20 minute and 2 lap race.

In the opening 35 minute and 2 lap moto on Sunday, Coppins was just inside the top 10 exiting the first corner, however the Kiwi was on a charge and wasted no time in getting past the competition lap after lap. Riding a superb race from beginning to end, Coppins pulled all the way through to finish the long race in 4th position.

Moto 2 was unfortunately not as good a result for Coppins. After getting a good jump out the gate, the Yamaha rider was taken down in a 3rd corner collision involving a number of riders. Quickly re-mounting and setting charge on the pack ‘Lizzard’ had his work cut out if he wanted to salvage a good number of points. The experienced GP racer pushed his Yamaha to the limit as he sliced his way back through the elite pack. In superb style, Coppins climbed back up the lap charts to cross the finish line in 7th position, awarding him a 6th overall for the day.

“Saturday’s qualifying went quite well for me so I expected a decent result today. We were a little off the mark with the bike setup in the first race due to the rain and change of conditions which means I spent a lot of energy fighting the bike as it was. Desalle crashed in front of me on the start and then I got hit from behind so started the race in last and worked my up to 7th. This is definitely not the track where you want to come from behind so it physically tough. Considering the two tough races I had I’m pretty happy with the overall result.” commented Coppins.

This coming weekend Josh Coppins and the Yamaha Monster Energy Team are due to head to Loket in the Czech Republic for the 13th round of the 15

Coppins strong in Czech Republic:

Kiwi motocross star, Josh Coppins, has put in a strong result at round 13 of the 15 round FIM Motocross World championship series held at the picturesque circuit of Loket in the Czech Republic.

‘Lizard’ wasted no time in settling into a good rhythm and pace on the very fast, hillside circuit as he clocked fast lap times almost immediately in the Saturday morning practice sessions. In the Qualifying race Coppins got caught up in turn one, dropping his bike and needing to re-mount. Back in 30th position, Coppins raced hard to claw his way back through the pack in the short race, crossing the finish line in 13th, salvaging a reasonable gate pick for Sunday.

A good start in race 1 saw Coppins position himself into a podium position when he capitalized on an error by Belgian giant Ken De Dycker. With David Philippaerts and South African Gareth Swanepoel hot on his heels, Coppins had to protect his lines as his Italian team-mate tried everything he could to put a wheel in front of the Kiwi. Philippaerts eventually made a move stick and Coppins chased him to the chequered flag for 4th spot.

Race 2 would leave Coppins with quite a bit of work to do as he missed his start and was placed down the field. Finding some great lines and passing places, Coppins quickly moved past the likes of De Dycker, Ramon and Swanepoel. As the other riders started to tire, Coppins got faster and set his fastest time of the race with five minutes to go. He shut down Nagl in a last lap attempt to relegate the German but Nagl held on with Coppins finishing 5th.

"A tough day at the office. I rode pretty well and it got off to a good start. I had a decent battle with David there for a while, he passed me, made a mistake and I could get him back and finished fourth by the line. I was away really well in the second moto but Nagl hit me hard on the first corner. I got roosted and my tear-offs were rubbish from that point. I did the best I could to fight back but the goggle lens popped out and I was getting dirt and dust in my vision all the time. Overall I felt I performed OK here but just missed a break to get a better overall result." commented the Kiwi.

Coppins is set to race round 4 of the Belgian championship in Balen-Mol next weekend before heading to Lierop on the 29-30 August for the penultimate round of the world championship series.

Bit of a shame he couldn't take a championship before leaving the FIM. He basically had it two years in a row and was by far the best rider on the ciruit but it seems the competition has stepped up their game this year and he hasn't really had the steam to smash em like he has done in the past. None the less like Rick said, 6th equal in the world is pretty damn good (not counting the Yanks)

Haha!! A racer is never happy with even second!! LOL!!! There's two places in racing first or nowhere!
I dunno if thats how Josh feels but deep down most racers want to win everything LOL!!!
When he's not involved anymore he will appreciate his achievements if he doesn't already, I reckon! He's still a legend!

New Zealand motocross rider Josh Coppins has reached a career crossroads after failing to receive a contract extension from his Yamaha team.

and more from harold...

"New Zealand rider Josh Coppins dropped one place to sixth overall in the world MX1 motocross championship despite two strong rides in the Netherlands this morning (NZ time).

Coppins was fourth in the first race of the Grand Prix at Lierop and second in the second.

However, both races were won by Belgian Ken de Dycker, who leapfrogged the Yamaha rider from Motueka in the series standings.

The leading positions remain unchanged after 14 of 15 rounds, with Italian Antonio Cairoli holding a healthy lead over German Max Nagl.

The final round is in Brazil on September 13."

Tough to know, but I suspect he'd be tempted to have one last shot, only he really knows how his body is holding up, but the race results would suggest he's improving as the season goes on.
I'm hoping he does give it one more crack personally.

That Guy
14th September 2009, 10:36
...6th overall. He is an incredible talent and one of the best and most determined riders ever in world MX. Came back several times from really bad injuries. A lot would have retired long ago...but I don't think if he goes back next year we will see him get the number 1 plate.

He's a bit like Aaron Slight or even Stirling Moss - one of the best riders/drivers ever to not win a championship.

I hope he proves me wrong and comes back next year and smokes 'em all.

In the mean time I reckon we should be stoked to have a top 10 rider in the MX World champs - we may look back on the Coppins years and miss not having a kiwi that can mix it up on the world stage. With injuries and performance there doesn't seem to be any kiwis set to fill his shoes. Townley can but injuries just keep getting in the way. Cooper can but what happened this year? Dobbin seems to be out for another 6 months....Columb is super fast but not quite at Coppins level (yet anyway)....Hurley has gone into semi-retirment....who else is going to replace him?

Therefore I hope he stays at least until some from NZ takes his place!

Good on him, its got to be bloody tuff against the young guys coming up
from mx2 . He has been over there forever , time to step back a bit and maybe enjoy being on top again in this part of the world . who cares if he comes back home and cleans up here and in oz easy , he deserves a good retirement for all the hard work lol. Shame really he just could not get that title, always a legend in my book thou.
