Bags?...
I just doubled up the heatshields on my exhausts..
So exhaust ... space...extra heatshield (from logburner)...space...original heatshield.
Works great...no heat on outside shield.
made up bungies with clips to hook onto rearfootpegs and backplate

Nah, agree with Joe on this one. Keenly interested in PANNIER racks at present, given forthcoming rides. Don't really want to run the soft bags against the side panels. Looking at making some myself.
Other racks can wait until I've engineered a solution...:whistle:

junk man joe are you talking hard or soft bags?most seem to be a rectangular portion behind the bag itself, with a mount to the rear footpeg,a mount or two the the rear upper subframe with a bar running around the back of the rear wheel to add further stability.I have been looking at lots of bikes and panniers would be on the wish list.most (except most BMW,s) seem to require a aftermarket bag,but i have found it difficult to find out how the bags mount to the frame.

I took a set of sv650 givi pannier racks and got my shop to chop them and custom fit them to my supermoto.
Depends what you want, I find lockable waterproof givi cases fantastic, so all you really need is the plate (or tubular bars) with correct knobs, and the fitting is just subject to each bike...

Ah, mine are permanent, don't need to take them off, even though they aren't used too often. They also serve as good tie down points.
As someone has already said, they can also serve as good crash bars, instead of your expensive cans/tail piece etc. :done:

Dirtbagz make some real good brackets that can be purchased with or without panniers... I recommend them after doing thousands of k's off road with them. They come for lots of different model dirt/adventure bikes and are made in the USA.
Also check out my mates new pannier business, he is making top quality heavy duty pannier bags that are built to last and torture tested as he regularly drops his bike :Pokey: hahah Seriously though they are top quality and his website is : www.steelpony.com.au they come in different sizes and models for different bikes/purposes and have some unique features! Tell Pete and Loyla that Rhino sent ya and they will look after you!

get a plastic fab shop to make you a black 3mm poly prop u bracket (depends where the exhaust is mounted) , and have it so it bungys on to the rear seat ,sit your softies over that,
that way the inside is protected from the dirt ,wheels , etc,

im thinking of a small frame, same size as back off bags, with eather plastic backing or alloy,, with a joining section between the frames,, whole set up will slide on top off back guard, behind the seat, and under pack rack.

It is a good idea to keep the weight as far forward as possible i.e. under you. The location of the bags on the DR mad absolutely no difference to the handling.

I made these for the KLR but wouldn't be too hard to make something similar for the DR - square tube frame, attaches to pillion footrest mount and standard rack, bags are cheap knock-offs of Pelicans, bought from Bunnings $99 each. The bags attach to the racks at the bottom with two capscres through a keyhole slot, and at the top with R clips. The right side one took a minor spill without damage and it kept the resto of the bike clear of the ground

You'll have to do something to protect the back of the right side panel before you go anywhere with bags, wether its a rack or just a supporting bar. Seen a few examples of melted side cover from those who just hung throw overs on with out any prep.
On my DR I just copied the bar that Farque had on his old DR to stop the pipe and panel meeting under the weight of the bags. The throw overs might still scuff the plastic a little on long bumpy dusty trips, but my panels already look used so I never worried about it.
There was a discussion on the topic a few years ago. Might take a bit of searching to find though.

Happen to know the owner of that DR. Those were home-made by him, copied off mine which was on my DR when I bought it. Ventura sticker added to make them look like a pro job ... worked by the looks of it.
Haven't got pics of mine with me at the mo - will take some this arvo & stick them on here. Stays on permanently & the copied set was easy to make according to him.

Considering it. Have a silver epoxy in the garage. But black would blend in better, especially against the side covers. The other important consideration is that black will limit how much the birdshit welding stands out....

The other aspect is that I enjoyed fabricating them. But wasn't as cheap as I thought initially. I'd say the $250 quote you got earlier would be on the money (or even cheap) if you included all materials & time.

Really good efforts. Been given some soft panniers so will look to make supports that sit out over plastics and exhaust.
Won't have any ready for the Cold Kiwi. Getting by though.
I can't weld so I'll be paying for some.
...but I have thought about bolting a box section alumium section to space out over exhaust, 3mm plate rectangle to support pannier, u bracket onto frame to support rectangle....I'll be running it past an engineer....

I gave goodvibes a PM other day and said i had a spare set of pannier racks i had wiped up for a trip north, and welcome to come over and see if there any good.
goodvibes came over for a visit and we set about fitting the racks,, they might as well been made for the bike, and fitted in like a glove...
i also had a spare venture travel bag,,, and that also left for wellington the same day...so over all one happy adventure, with rack and bag on board...
my pleasure to help you out, and hope to see you on the gravel one day..
