Change it to 1 man, the race motards in that group be far more fun to play with !
Be there on a bike ! Not sure which yet as the 1050 goes back into road trim after this weekend !

Dont particularly like the bike speed difference in group 1. Didn't mind on me old SV track bike, but not too keen with the motard.

Going G2?
I'm keen to see how slow I really am :baby:
Last time I was in G2 my two major memories were:
1. DMNTD riding around me at T1 at insane lean angle on the Brutale :headbang:
2. Finding out Rev'IT leathers hold up well.
My learns from the day were:
1. Some people haven't heard of physics.
2. Trying too hard may end in tears.
Learned a lot from finally accepting that to go fast you have to go slow and build a platform to move forward on rather than relying on balls and gung-ho attitude (although that certainly helps :Punk:).

...Did last month, couldnt not do it again, so we're booked again for this one.
At this stage it looks like I'll be riding down on Friday morning so if anyone else is stoopid enough to be doing this as well let me know. Of course if anyone is driving down with space for a bike then let me know, happy to share costs etc etc.
Given I'll be riding down I'll have a bit of road kit to remove and store so if anyone has a bit of shed space I can borrow that would be great. Again, happy to share costs etc etc
....WOOOOT, Cant wait

I'm thinking long and hard about this.
There is a Puke track day on the Monday and Puke is 230km closer to home than Taupo.
Taupo is a much nicer track to ride......
I rode down on the Friday night night did the Saturday track day and then rode home on Saturday afternoon.
My advice - dress warm. It was bloody cold at night.
I think trying to do it all in one day is a big ask. Was glad I stayed overnight.

Rainbow Lodge backpackers, they lock the yard at night, it is "on the way" to the track (just of Spa road) but an easy walk into the pub :) Not bad for a backpackers, they do have motel style rooms or you could try your luck in a "dorm"

I was planning on riding down on Friday morning. I never expected it would be easy but theres been more than one comment on here about the difficulty so Im thinking about going down on Thursday and was looking for somewhere ridiculously cheap to stay. Looks like that might be the place...

Would be cool. Single room was only $45, dorms are about $25 i think. I called them to book and they said about they have a locked secure parking area. Really couldn't be bothered riding down 5am on friday morning!! I'm gonna set off about lunch time

Sweet, having done the trackday last month down there and having brought the Family down and made a weekend of it we're pretty tight budget wise this time around so I'll have to double check with the boss that we can spare an extra 50 odd bucks, but at this stage Id imagine it will be cool. I'll let you know.

Only my 2nd ever track day. Last time out I went in the slow group which was too slow, so needed to move up to the med group. But i've never been to Taupo so gonna do a few laps with the slow group to get used to the track then go into the medium pace one (maybe!!). What about you?

Yeh, Ive booked for Group 4 (slow group) as well. This is only my second track day too. I went in the same group last month at Taupo. I'll see how I get on but (and im slow as) I'll just check my ego at the door and start in this group again.
I reckon you could easily go in either. Once the field spreads out a abit you find yourself riding in clear space anyway
I think the real benefit to moving up is probably getting a chance to follow some faster guys and gals which is always the best way to learn.
Anyway, thats my 2 cents worth but like I say, its only my second track day so what the f&%k would I know.... lol

Reckon you won't regret going the afternoon before.
Pulling into Taupo at 11pm I was the coldest I've even been on the bike (and I ride all through winter).
Early in the morning would be worse - probably have fog to content with as well.
Great day out on the track and a nice ride home in the afternoon.
Have fun !

Brilliant idea. Hell it's fun being the top one or two in the group anyway. Then you know it's time to move up for sure.
I reckon you could easily go in either. Once the field spreads out a abit you find yourself riding in clear space anyway
Totally. There's plenty of room for a faster rider in group 4. If you're really that fast that it's a problem they'll ask you to move up a group. Chances are you'll just end up in clear air ahead of everyone :)
I think the real benefit to moving up is probably getting a chance to follow some faster guys and gals which is always the best way to learn.
Yep it's a great help. It's also a great way to crash or at least find the limits of your sphincter muscles :shit:
When following a faster rider you don't know what tyres that guy is on and you probably don't have the mid corner braking finesse. Your suspension probably won't be setup as well either. In other words the chances of you exceeding the limit before you realise you're at it are quite high.
April/May the track is going to be fairly cold so it's even worse as the total grip level is lower at least until after lunch.
For a second trackday I'd be focusing on sorting lines, finding brake/turn/apex/exit markers and being as smooth as possible (but still firm) on brakes and gas. There's more than enough there to keep you going if you focus on one of those per session and you'll come out WAY faster as a result.
EDIT: I'll probably come out for a session in group 4 to show a mate who's a trackday virgin some lines so feel free to tag along if you want. I'm the guy on the bike and leathers of my profile pic. Will be in garage 18.

How many sessions did you do?
I got myself a 1992 liteace van and came down in that, it just fits the sv in nicely (it's the high-roof version). It's a fair bit easier and a lot warmer than riding down. :) The van is pretty noisy though, lots of road noise and engine noise (though I don't think it's as bad as the wind noise on the bike).
I had a good time on the track, hadn't gotten too rusty on the sv after doing the last track day on the bandit. I want to check and adjust the front suspension sag before the next trackday, I dropped some new 0.90kg/mm springs in yesterday in a hurry and didn't check the sag, I think it might've been bottoming out a little.
I think I prefer track days in autumn/winter, don't get so overheated on the bike.
Looking forward to next time.

Definately improved overall from last month, but still had a couple of "WTF did I do that for moments", the best being my cross country "State Highway realignment" between turns 12 and 14.
Not sure what happened in the end. I know I was guilty of checking the speedo and missed my normal "do shit to make it round the corner mark" and I think this caused a little panic resulting in some hamfisted use of the Throttle, Gears and Brakes. Eventually normal programming was restored and the bike was slowed enough to go cross country relatively smoothly and upright.
Not sure when I'll get down there again (not for lack of wanting to) and will be waiting un-patiently for the day.

Ah, yes... I had your words ringing in my head for the rest of the sesision. What was it, something about people often saying the last thing they saw before the crashed was the speedo........... Now I kow why
FWIW, its neither big nor clever, but..... I saw A number on the damm thing I'd not seen before :woohoo:

Was a good day. Not too cold either (well, as cold as I thought it might be!). Didn't really reach my goals for the day but had no incidents and made it home in one piece.
Anyone got any pics of me? Red/black leathers, black KTM 690 supermoto (the thing with the big kenworth exhausts heh).

Ian Laurie, freelance photographer, will have a heap of photos available late today. http://hardout.webs.com/motott.htm
We tried Laurie because our normal photographer, Alick, wasn't able to make it this time. He seemed good, was moving around heaps... saw him in some interesting spots. Looking forward to seeing what he got.
Photos are to be ordered directly thru him.
he has a couple of samples up already, just taken around the pits....

I think the wind had a bit to do with it. Last time i was hitting 185 on the motard, this time (after lowering the gearing even!) I dont think I quite got to 180. (ie, if I hadn't lowered the gearing I may have only hit 170).

You've gotten heaps faster.
Do something about your bike's suspension (rear end skipping on the brakes) and pay for your fairings!

Haha, Congrats!! Would have looked a bit of a setup if you'd made it there on the day - We would all have been pitting together!!
Thanks MotoTT for another good day. I left very happy after four sessions - hadn't been to the track or had any exercise for a while so was a bit the worse for wear. And it was the first time I'd driven down and back on the same day too....
And thanks for the tips re my front end Phil.... made a big difference!! :first:

Ian Laurie, freelance photographer...
Nice, some good photos in there. May just have to purchase some of those shots for vanity.
Thanks for showing me some lines by the way, will have to try and do it again only this time be more aggressive when traffic is concerned. :P That's what I get for doing the whole "taking my road bike to the track, don't want to bin it" thing.

You're welcome man. No, i can understand that totally, nobody wants to bin it! Don't bother being more aggressive in an attempt to pass other riders... just keep having fun you'll get faster in your own time as you become more comfortable. There is always someone faster, i think thats the case for the vast majority of us mortals, no matter how fast we get.
:D
