Taupo raceway is a fun circuit no matter how big or small your bike is.Or how experienced or inexperienced you are.
The track is pretty safe (unlike pukie) you arent going as fast and there are plenty of sandtraps to catch ya if you run off the track.

To keep everybody happy and safe the day will be divided into 3 groups
1-Racers and fast road riders..
Touring-mid paced ,experienced riders
Novice--this is for newbees to the track and less experienced riders.
You decide initialy which group you want to be in
I may move you if you are clearly too fast or slow because I really want us all to have a fun SAFE day.
Only one group will be on the track at a time
There will be firm overtaking rules for the classes and I will be emphasising --The onus to complete the overtaking manuver SAFELY is on the overtaking rider.
YOUR bike must be up to WOF standard on the day and can't be leaking any fluids. Its up to you to make sure its up to scratch. PLEASE CHECK YOUR BIKE OVER We WILL be checking your bike before letting you on the track.
-For race bikes they have to pass scrutineering.Again guys/gals please dont blame me if ya sit in the pits all day. its up to YOU to make sure ya gear/bike are up to scratch.

Also you need decent riding gear-
The minimum will be cudura/leathers.2 piece or a one piece race suit. bike boots. leather gloves. a good fitting helmet.
I would suggest a back protector as well but you dont have to.--Ill have 2 spares at the track with me
Heres a link to suggested track day setup
http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?p=193525#post193525

I have a timetable and rules for the day
http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?p=199318#post199318

There will be a 3/4 hour lunch break so there will be plenty of time to gas up and grab something to eat
Lunch has been organised and will be subway which will be delivered to the track -link attached to food thread http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=10065
Im still thinking a BBQ would be cool afterwards but hey thats up to you lot.

Im looking for people wanting to be flag marshalls/track controllers.
SP MAN has offered his very experienced services on this front --so as of NOW he is head marshall.
Now if you're worried about waving the wrong flag or summat like that --dont worry -all except SP will only have one flag--the red one
You will get 2 track sessions Free of charge if you marshal/control the day Yep thats right -Im gonna need 4 or more people to help out flag marshalling and keeping the crew under control IF you are maybee not keen on actually circulating Im VERY keen to hear from you. As a reward all helpers will get 2 20 minute track sessions all to themselves

Ive spoken to camellia court re accomodation. now they are in Tonga st which is basicly on its way too the track.
-as it stands now the following is available
http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?p=193529#post193529
I'm planning to stick to a pretty strict timetable basicly ill be there 7.30 and starting sighn on at 8.00
PLEASE PLEASE GUYS -dont all turn up at 8.55 wanting to be scrutineered.

I'm well up for it come shine... I'll watch come rain, might poodle.. But I'll be there either way..

For the marshaling, is it all that day, or only a few races/sessions that day, and if only a few races/sessions that day, then are the 2 free goes that day too, or a later date? make sense??

For anyone wondering about the ride down, I've given thought to hiring a van (I have a friend with a van who I'm going to ask first), and can get a trailer too. Just thinking more about the coming home, that it can be a little knackerin, plus (really hope it doesn't) should the worst happen...
Anyhoo, anyone else interested, then may be split the gas and hire charge of the run down..

Also, the track layout (http://www.motorsport.org.nz/Circuits/taupo.htm) too, for those wondering..

just cos you're on a track, doesn't mean you have to play hard. Just means you can enjoy more of a ride without the hassle of other traffic. Just go in a slower group, and cruise round, plus you can say you've done the track :niceone:

1. How long would it take to get to there from Auckland.
2. Does anyone know the situation regarding insurance on track days?

FROSTY

It takes me about 3 hours in my van going the matamata way -boring on a bike but its easy riding.
Re insurance -well I guess thats up to your insurance company.
Id suggest that you could quote the ltsa's description of a road.
I mean its a closed road but a road none the les.

1. depends if you're riding or driving, but would probably see about 3-4 hours. I might take the tent and camp down there.. depends.. But it's a pretty easy drive.

2. call your insurer and ask. Some companies are starting to allow 'track days' as long as it's not a competition or high-speed event as such. Specify that it is just a track day, with no competition involved. Else if they don't insure you, just ride real easy :msn-wink:

This brings a question to mind. (which I will soon link to another thread so as not to highjack this one). If your bike is insured for a Track day and My bike is not, What happens in the scenario that I crash into you?
Normally it would be a case of: I say sorry, You punch me in the nose and we both fix our own bikes.
But if your bike is insured, Then I suspect your insurance company will end up chassing me to cover the cost of your $20 000 R1! Scary stuff!
Sorry,, but it needs to be brought up.

Please reply to this in this thread (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?p=191567#post191567)

good point, and no idea. call your insurer first and ask,
This is the point. For those of us that only have cheap "Race Track only" bikes and No insurance on them. We are happy to pay for our own crashes. But now that we can be sharing the track with expensive Insured bikes, We can't ride hard anymore, cause the risk of having to pay for your bike damage as well, (through your insurance company) is too great a risk. So if we can't ride hard any more on A RACE TRACK,,, what the point of going to a race track?? We would almost need only insured bike riding the track together and then Non-insured bikes riding together. What a headache!!

good point, and no idea. call your insurer first and ask, then start another thread in the bike section and let us know, then we can have a good ol' chin wag over it before it turns into a thread about 'my bike is faster than your bike, so you won't crash into me' type of thing

Edit - there's already a thread there..

a friend of mine is goin thru this process at the moment, hes with honda riders club and apparantly they reckon on the track they will only pay for whos claiming not who they hit or otherwise. Check your policy, i just went thru a large insurance claim based on a track crash and the policy clearly states not racing or preparing for a race and as it wasnt and i could prove it by a copy of the signed indemnity i was covered. having said all this frosty is doing a good job so far and seperating riders into different groups does make a huge diffirence. go out there have some fun and hey you might even learn something.

Mate Im gonna split the day into 2 seperate sessions -during the morning the fast group will be asked to show concideration of other track users -ie No demon dive under at the last moment or racing type overtaking.
I want everybody to get used to the track before its open slather

So were does that leave me?
The 150's not a fast bike. So I wouldn't normally go in with the "Fast/Race" group. But if I have to "nanna it" around every corner because GixerBoys GSXR1000 is holding me up in the corners, (No offence, you just happened to be the wrong post at the wrong time!), Then I have no point in riding the track.
I'm there to Test my bike, To learn the track, to learn the limits of my tires by pushing it hard through the corners. And if I come off during the day,, then I've learnt something about the limits, and how hard I can ride on race day!

So how do you fast guys feel about having a 150 on the track with you?
I guess I would hold you up in the same way I have just moaned about.
So a slow class it is then. :baby:

that's ok.. he's back out (scared of me or summut.. dunno..), so it'll just be me..

however, I get his van for free (aside from gas and any new dings) and it has a towbar too. His van can fit 2 (so mine and 1 more), and then a trailer (so up to 3 more..??), which then becomes 'how are we going to get there..?' as his van only has 2 (may be 3) seats.. with up to 5 bikes.. but that's minor detail

Although I want all levels of experience to have a ball Im thinking that track day virgins and inexperienced riders will have very sore heads at days end from everything they learned.

is it $50 per person or per bike?

FROSTY
11th March 2005, 09:47
Price is per person. If two guys/gals are sharing the same bike in different classes its still 2 entrys.
If this is going to be the case for anyone PLEASE let me know.
The reason for the per person thing is all to do with public indemnity etc.
Ohh and guys a strict rule --ONE ENTRY ONE CLASS --
You can change classes as the day goes on
THE ONLY people on the track for more than one session will be instructors
and possibly me in the first novice class session.

Nooby question - any bike prep needed
e.g. remove indicators, mirrors, number plates, tape headlights etc.
I'lll get my bike ready before putting it on my trailer.

FROSTY

well um --shit ya just hafta ask the difficult questions doncha. :shake:
Making it up as he goes along. eeep
Ok if ya wanna have double the track time by riding 2 bikes then Itll count as 2 entrys
BUT -if you want to ride 2 bikes in the same class--maybee swapping bikes between sessions then I have no problems it being just one entry.
I need to do whats fair for the most people.
No intent to piss anyone off here just trying to be fair

Ok have just sent you an e-mail, i put my name in the poll, im hoping that included me in you tally.

I hope WT and the other good riders out there will be able to spare a few laps to show me some lines etc.

Be good to catch up with everyone.

Where are most people staying? There is a nice little camp ground with hot pool less than 5min from the track, i cant remember its name though.

If your bike is road-going, you don't need to strip it to put it on the track. Frosty's suggestions (as good as they are) are for transporting the bike around with the least possible risk of damage. If you can safely and easily put your bike on the trailer without having to remove mirrors etc, then it's fine. I think it's more for those who haven't done it before.

By all means, take Frosty's advice (always good :niceone: ), but it's not a requirement to strip it to be on the track.

Might pay to buddy up too, could be a long trip. I'm taking a van (so are a few others, as well as Frosty), so can stick some bits in there. I now have 2 bikes in the back, but it has a towbar, so anyone else wanting to have their bikes driven, we can sort out trailer hire. The seats are taken tho, so someone with a car would have to follow, with anyone else going too (TBD).

Hope my drivel helps a little, welcome btw ;)

Bugjuiice you planning on doing an early morning start and heading down, or staying the night before, If my other transport plans dont come through I may just have to take you up on the trailer offer, I'm sure i can borrow one to save on hireage costs too.

That'd really help out. I was going to ask around a couple of bike shops on Barrys Point Road to see if I could borrow one of their bike trailers if someone asked, but if you can get hold of one, then sweet..

So far, we're thinking about heading down early Sunday morning. Justsomeguy is the other bike, I have room at my place for a few bodies to kip over the night, then we head down early morning. Like I said tho, the seats in the van have arses now, so you'll need to take a car. If there's anyone else doing the same, then you could buddy up. And, in light of this, you could drop your bike off with me, then you can head down whenever suits you. I'll bring your bike with me whenever I get there. I'm aiming to be at the track for around 9am, altho the gates don't open til 9.30. I'm allowing for stops and 'getting lost' time..

Can afford to be a bit sketchy at the moment, but nearer the time (a week..??) before, then I'll start to finalise things..

I'd just like to put in a good word for State Insurance. They handle claims quickly, and their customer service is more than adequate. Also, they had no problems confirming that I AM covered on the track, obviously as long as I'm not "racing" (being timed, etc...). It seems with them, if you have comprehensive / full cover, you're automatically covered on the track.

So.... You guys are going to have one mighty powerfull machine on the track with you, ridden by the biggest track "nancy boy" you're likely to meet... I'll be the one approaching "Plad" speed on the straights, and holding up the NuBees (TM) in the corners.

I SO Fricken can't wait, you have no idea.
I guess I'l HAVE to get a pair of Draggin Jeans now  (I could wear my normal jeans into the shop, try on the Draggin jeans and leave, giving them back my jeans???)

I finally get to keep my bike at/above the magical 8000 rpm range (swannman, WT, BugSplat you'll know what I mean) :wari: :wari:

Bugjuice - I've got a double axle braked trailer I use for my construction company. It'll take 2 bikes side by side & possibly another 2 behind. I'll measure it & see. I'll be towing it with my maxima so will have room for others.
My thoughts were to have some spare trailering space for the return journey in case some riding down can't ride back.
I will touch base with u closer to the time to make arrangements

Alrighty then, any fellow Aucklander's keen for a blat down to Taupo on Saturday, taking the scenic route? Probably leave around lunchtime and try and get there (ie the cabins) by 4 or 5pm.
All skill levels welcome, I won't be in any rush.

sorry BJ I dissagree -You dont NEED to strip em -definitely -Ill simply insist on duct tape on the glass bits for safety sake but if ya aint riding down pull the stuff off.
Beint totally blunt ---if ya dont crash it dont matter a darn -if ya do theres that much less mess to clean up -and expensive bits for you to buy

fairy fluff, strip away.. I can't be arsed for about 6 things to pull off the bike to put on again. I'll tape the lights, but the flashers will ping for miles, and the mirrors will fold. aaaaaaaaaaaand that's if the worst happens, which it won't. so :bleh:

[Edit]

I will start a new thread for the ride under meetings and events as appropriate when I can get my head around some more information. At this stage we'll probably look at an 11am departure, stop somewhere around 1pm for lunch, get to Taupo around 4pm. Route TBA. Times to be confirmed.
