View Full Version : Couple of mechanical issues...

A couple of problems have developed with my GSXR
1) There is something leaking on the concrete from the right hand ride of the bike, not fast but has left a bit of a stain on the drive way bout the size of a 50c coin
2) The bike wont go into gear without stalling. Starts in Neutral fine, but as soon as you pull in the clutch and put it in first it stalls. Only just started doing this....
Left it for 1/2 a hour, and now she is fine again? Yet before, put it into first and click, off went the engine.???
3) When riding it (when it was going) sometimes its really hard to change to the next gear, like it is slipping..... i.e I have been in 3rd, pulled over and braked with the clutch in and tried to get it into first but it can be a real mission, gear shifter just doesn’t seem to catch the gear....
Can anyone give me some insight into what these problems might be???
(Probably just me!)

Stalling when engaging gear is often your side stand safety switch !

ok I found the dripping, it off the exhaust, seems like just water at the bottom of the exhaust....normal?
Im finding it really hard even sitting still to go up and down through the gears,,,seems like sometimes it just wont go into gear..... I have the clutch in tight any ideas?

Ok bike is going now.... Even with the clutch in, i put it into 1st and its a bit of a jolt and click as it goes into gear...this normal into first?....I keep clutch in, click up through the gears....and then as I go down it feels like there is no resistance, and the only wany to say go from 3rd to 2nd, is to go from 3rd to 4th and try again back down.... shouldnt it be easy to just go up and down the gears? no trick to it?

make sure your stand is up on your bike, if the stand down, as soon as u put it in gear it will cut out.

haha yeah the kick stand got me when I first started. With the gear problem I didnt understand your post, what exactly is the problem, are you changing up by more than one gear when you apply the clutch?

to get use to gears etc, I just sit on the bike and practice with the clutch in... I go to first, fine, then 2nd, then 3rd etc....but sometimes it takes 2 or more goes...is this maybe cause Im not letting the clutch out between gears cause im not moving?.... its even worse when going down the gears, took me 3 mins to go down them.... I just thought with the clutch in it would be easy...1st,, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 5th, 4th etc but it gets stuck and wont go down and I have to click down about 10 times to get it to ;catch' and go to the next gear
make sense?

nah mate wont work like that sorry, for the gears to change properly the bike will have to be moving, the only reason it doing that is because the bike is stationary.

Awesome mate thanks.... I just realised that as i read your post!....
So the only issue is the dripping of 'water' off the exhaust...normal?
Cheers you have saved me alot of stress!

haha no problem mate.
With the water problem, I get a little bit when my bike is cold, but that all I can say mate, maybe someone with the same/similar bike to you can help you there. Is it an excessive amount of water, or just some drops?

Just a small wet 'patch' must be dirty water cause it leaves a small stain on the concrete.... doesnt feel like oil or anything and no smell or taste so probably just water....will post a pic showing where it is dripping from....

Taste??? haha had a drink of it? im just fucking wit ya haha... Um im not sure mate, a lot of cars and bikes do that when their first turned on. Wouldnt say its much, personally I wouldnt worry about it. But up to you.

rule of thumb...if it tastes bad...thats a bad sign! :)
Yeah doesnt look too major....it isnt coming out of the engine thats the main thing

The water is probably just condensation.
Not unusual as the weather gets colder.

Everything your bike is doing is normal. Gears are made to change when moving, they dont engage well when sitting still. If you are still and the gears wont change, release the clutch SLOWLY until you get to the start of it engaging and you will hear a "click" as the gear shifts, then you can change down again.
Water is most likely condensation as stated. Always make sure your stand is up before you want to move, that switch is there for a reason. Would be bad to ride off with the stand down!
Happy riding
