View Full Version : What speed are you riding at?
Conquiztador

Last w/e I was riding with a couple riders that kept the needle at 130 - 150 95% of the time. I have no prob with that. Feel comfy with that speed. As long as the bike is up to it.
These were riders I had never been riding with before. So it made me wonder: Is this what most riders do?
I have been riding with riders who cruise at 110 and the ones who do the 160+. Also with kamikaze pilots who consider anything below 180 to be a yawn.
What is the speed you do on the open road?

At the moment I have no idea how fast I am travelling on the open road. My speed sensor shat itself in Tairua almost 2,000km (estimated) ago. The only information I have available is the time of the day, rpm x 1,000 and left or right turns.

Isn't that a bitch! The bike is working well but the sensor that is supposed to tell you about any problems is faulty... Cost you $150 to replace a broken fuckin sensor so it can tell you that there is no problems. No wonder I like bikes with points and carbies...
Open road 100 to 140 depending on conditions. keep under 140 because I don't want to wear out any more shoes....
Tell me Sir, are you wearing comfy shoes?
Reasonably so, why do you ask officer?
Well there is a phone about 12 km down the road and it is a long walk in uncomfortable shoes...

Did Tawa to Rotorua and back recently, trying hard to do 105-115 mostly. (That's about 0.005 of a degree of rotation of my speedo needle. Stupid speedo goes to 240 or something. Like I'd ever need that.)
180? Geez, not often. (If ever!)
A fair bit more than 110 sometimes when passing, if it seemed "safe", or in "interesting" bits of remote road. (Which makes 100-110 feel darn slow).
The fear of tickets was what kept speed down in most places - not road or traffic conditions. (Which doesn't mean I don't slow down in bad conditions, I mean that often the conditions would have allowed more than what was legal.)
A couple of times, as I was being "sensible", I got passed by cars.
e.g. on a straight (straights are boring) between Taupo and Rotorua I was doing 110-115 and got passed by five teenage guys in some Mums Daihatsu buzz-box doing 140 or so. (They then drove up the arse of some Falcon for a while, and when I caught up at a passing lane they moved out and either blocked me on purpose or just couldn't speed up again, up the hill - so I saw the red mist and passed them up the inside - at the kinds of license losing speeds I'd been trying to avoid. (Did I learn from that?)
e.g. Straights between Foxton and Levin. Doing 110 (dark and cold). Subaru wagon passes at 130-150. Whatever.
It's all relative. Passed a cruiser on the desert road. (What a loud noise they make when they touch-down on slow-sharp corners!). Later in Taupo I was patiently waiting in a queue at road works (this was in the 50 km/hr zone) and the cruiser passes me back - on the left-hand shoulder of the road, going to the front of the queue. That's cool. We all choose how and where we ride (and on what).
(Side issue: a modern 750cc bike is MORE than enough - for me. Geez.)

Where's the "Depends..." option?
I have seen all of the listed speeds on the roads around NZ. Any hairy moment I may have experienced happened at speeds quite below any mark listed in the poll.
Most of the time I prefer to cruise at the 0-10 km/h above the limit since I then won't have to worry about the fuzz. However, I often speed up for corners - both coming in and coming out.

Either you stay inside the 100k limit or you go over. And if you do so on regular basis you tick the appropriate box.

I'd like to think that I can adjust my riding to the company i'm with, and enjoy every bit of my riding regardless of what the needle is showing.
Happy to cruise at 95 - 100 on my learner friendly rides, also happy with a faster riders at 110 - 120 and up to 130 hooning alone. Then again I dont ride for the straights, but for the corners and super tight twisties so cant do very illegal speeds at my favourite 25ers, 35ers, 45ers, and 55ers :)
Unfamiliar road slowing right down to noobish 100.
Upper self imposed limit of 130 as I understand that my licence is a privilege and my life is up to me to keep.

Yeah fucking right. What a load of bollocks!
Sometimes I speed sometimes I stay within the "generally accepted" limits. If there's not other cars on the road, no grit and no ice I'm happy to exceed the speedlimit "somewhat". Can't be too bloody hard to understand that depends is not about whether I need a shit or any other internal factor. If the conditions are right I'm happy to go as fast as the bike feels comfortable doing. Only sheep accept speed limits, or any other "law" for that matter, as a god-given commandment.
Surely, noone here could honestly say that if they knew they weren't going to be caught and knew they weren't going to have an accident, would have any issue with going as fast as they felt comfortable with.
Gimme a fucking break. Or are you maybe having your period?

Nah. My periods finished. I have my innertubes tied.
We all do that. Ride slower when going through a road work, when there are cop cars, when there is rain or just before Christmas when Santas Helpers are watching us.
Here I was thinking this was a simple question: Do you stay inside the speedlimit? If not, then what is the speed you normally sit on while riding (if no road works, if no cops and not just before Christmas...)
But please feel free to eleborate on the reasons why you would change your maximum speed depending on what moode you are in. :wari:

Nothing to do with mood, as I have said already "depends" only depends upon exterior factors, otherwise I do what I feel comfortable with. Only exception is that if I am hungover I behave myself nicely... and not just to avoid attracting attention either.

An indicated 110 km/h is most likely closer to 100 km/h than 120 km/h.

I've done 225. And for me that's what the track is for. I love track days. You get to ride as fast as you want and if you come off usually it's all good. A speedo that reads 240 makes sense.
On the road I would be classed as sensible and prefer to stick around the speed limit because I have no radar. Or is it I have no radar because I stick around the speed limit. And I'm happy to publicly state that.
Although I did have an experience this year of riding at warp factor 9 for ages with a group. That would be around 115kmph indicated so probably 109 true if I remember rightly.
Sometimes I have a problem remembering numbers.

I ticked 120, but it is 120 on a suzuki speedo, so really only 109 (verified by GPS). Of course I would never go faster than that! :innocent:
My GPS is not 100% reliable, for instance on the trip computer it lists the fastest speed at 149, clearly I wouldn't do that - it must be wrong/it was a private road/I tried it out when in an aeroplane/a mate borrowed the GPS and that speed was done by him/it's a scooter so it can't possibly go that fast.

I'm in agreement with the need for a 'depends' option.
'Open road' covers a multitude of variety/situations...and there is never a one size fits all speed.
On the open road (HW #) I tend to sit at 5000rpm which is easier to see than my speed, and translates to about 65mph (105kph).
But on the open road (no HW#) then all bets are off...

Assuming conditions and traffic are "good" I sit the clock at 115k. Given a 7% speedo error (I think that's about right) then I am at around 108k. Fast enough to keep a place in the traffic - not so fast as to upset the LEO's. If I sit it at 100k, the traffic tries to run me off the road in an effort to get past...bastards
If I am overtaking then I might zoom up to around 120k for a brief moment whilst I execute the movement...but not if the are HP cars around...you never know who needs to fill their quota on any given day.
In general I try to keep the license clean and pay no "voluntary taxes"...

As mentioned in the first post last w/e I rode with a couple riders I had never been on the road with before. I did a little over 900k's inside 24h. Alone (I did Napier - Taupo alone) and with the others when on a open road the speed was between 130 - 150k/h. From HB to Taupo to Rotorua to Tauranga. Then back coming some "backroads" from Tauranga to Taupo.
Not once did I feel that it was dangerous or that we did take unnecessary risks. When in traffic we would ease until it was clear and then pass. No yellow line crossing.
Only when going from Rotorua to Tauranga after the sun had settled did I cut down to approx 110 - 120k/h as I dont know that road too well. And night vision is not what it used to be when young.
It is intresting to read the comments here. And also to see that over 50% (currently) of all that have picked one are riding at approx 120k/h. We probably feel that we can from 120 quickly slow down to 109 to avoid a ticket but if we get pinged we do not loose the license and the cost is not too high. And probably also that 100k/h gets us in the way for the cagers.

When did they change that? Used to be when you saw the white disk with the black slash through it it was 70mph single or dual.

Im still on my learners so i do 70kph tops:whistle: even when every guy, his dog and its flees are riding my ass, honking their horns or flashing past me like a blur scarring the pants off me. (not a pretty sight:sick:
My thoughts exactly.. I try and stay at the speed limit truly I do, but the bike just seems to have a mind of its own ;) detector helps lots..
I wonder if that is a viable defence? involentary speeding! im gonna file that 1 away incase i ever need it
Voted on the 100, mainly because there is no 80-100.
I tried sometimes to go faster but seems I can't gather enough courage. I have two small children and don't want them to be left without their father.
its a bike not a cage, 80s gonna kill you just as effectivly as 100, if your afraid of dying buy a gas guzzling 4x4, otherwise live life (and before you say it no i dont have 2 small kids, its 3)

Interesting thought pattern developed from these comments. I realised that I am a Rebel, a criminal, someone who is outside what the society has deemed to be acceptable. I am a law breaker. Perhaps not a 1%'er anymore, but clearly someone who breaks the laws every day.
But from the current result of this poll I am in good company...

And another thing that comes out of this: Currently 7% are telling us that they ride at 160k/h, 180k/h or at "The stop". When you take in to account that a few who tell us that they have the throttle handle at "the stop" when they ride and their rides clearly are only able to do 100 - 120k/h at max, I estimate that the 160k/h+ brigade here is approx 5%. That makes it one outta 20 riders who ride like they stole it.
I can actually believe that. The biking community is a place where many who don't give a shit garvitate. Something about the freedom, the adrenaline rush, the ability to get away from it all.
I think it is not far of the mark to say that we get one in 20 who think they are bullet proof who ride a bike. Sadly they do not stay around to prove it...

There's lies, damn lies and statistics. Would'nt really read to much into the poll. 120kms happens to be a good pace to get around at, especially on a naked bike, without getting carried away with major braking into corners.

I guess it really depends where we are riding, on a road full of little kids we tend to slow down or where there are obvious threats [hotdog sellers, real estate agents and greenpeace]. but when out of town or where I live you can sit at naughty speeds and not worry.

i was having trouble keeping my speed down - one of the reasons i sold the bus. passed a line of trucks one morning at about 4.30am. closing speed well over 100km/h. 3 trucks, all following a patrol car at about 90km/h. i didn't even see if the disco lights came on. no-one got hurt, no one even came close, but i had an epithany after that. 1500kms out of a back tyre (no burnouts) just way too fast, all the time.
time for a break.

Open road 100 to 140 depending on conditions. keep under 140 .
140km :sherlock: is this on an open or closed road? If it is on an open road I would say you get first prize for stupidity :msn-wink:

140 km/h on an open road is pretty stupid unless you've got knobblies. On the sealed roads not a sweat.
Interesting topic, if for no other reason to illustrate how effective mass indoctrination is.

On good open roads I usually tick along at around 110 but will creep up to 120 in some situations. 140 is not unheard of during a passing move. I'd rather be in front of a vehicle than sit at the back watching tail lights, the road and putting up with the turbulence from something like a big bus or truck. I'm not a slave to the speedometer so I ride more with the flow of traffic than a one size fits all number. On some roads 80-90 kph is absolutely flying...

the most important criteria is "can I stop or take evasive action in the road I can see?", and there are some roads that 70kmh is fast, but on the highway I sit on 110 - 130 kmh. It's a speed that is well within my ability to stop and take evasive action, is fast enough that I need to stay focussed and slow enough that in the event of coming across a mobile tax collector I can either lose speed quickly or I'm not going so fast I walk home.
Personally I think that 100kmh could even be dangerous because it's too easy to zone out at that speed, but the road rules are not just set for car drivers but for the least skilled car drivers.

The secret trick is not speeding in front of police cars
Or, more accurately, not speeding in front of police cars that aren't already busy
A couple of us had an excellent ride yesterday (Bombay, Miranda, Kopu, Ngatea, Paeroa, Te Aroha, Okororie, Tahuna, Mercer, home) and we did a pretty good clip for all of it. Went past no less than 3 HP cars at............interesting...... speeds. All 3 were already occupied.
often 'tis better to be lucky than good.

often 'tis better to be lucky than good.I think I heard you go past my house... "that aren't already busy" isn't strictly true... When I got pulled up back on my Lplates I was stopped talking to an officer and just as he started looking over the bike some boy racer started doing burnouts just around the block so he just jumped in his car and hauled ass that way:clap:

Those who have ridden with me know I am happy to watch them dissapear into the distance if I am uncomfortable with their pace (which happens often).
Extremely rare that I see my indicated speed above 120 though I have been known to occaisonally exceed 100km/hr.
There has been times I have told myself off for going at a speed I think was probably too fast for the conditions.

Pretty easy. If you like having a licence then best you do what is required to keep it.
