Three prongs? That's not a proper fork - a fork should have 4 prongs. With 3 prongs it isn't a fork, it's a trident.

HOG have been around for years and have over a million members worldwide. They’re a factory sponsored social group (marketing exercise if you want to be cynical about it) but, most importantly, they raise MILLIONS of dollars for muscular dystrophy. It might not be your thing (it isn’t mine either) but each to their own.
That said, I did meet one HOG ‘cock’ on Saturday. I was stood looking at a particularly showy new Harley when this tool floated by and just said ‘55’. What he meant was that he had $55,000 in his bike. Now there was a f’kin’ tosser worth taking the piss out of (but that really wasn’t anything to do with his ‘HOGyness’ – he was just a prick).

So the Christchurch HOG guys have decided to make a patch for their jackets and show proudly that they belong to a specific group. Wow... thats really bad - what next?
Perhaps people over 40 will decide to form a group that only people over 40 can join - and then they will wear patches and badges to show there pride?
Then maybe Boulevard owners will go elitist and buy jackets with boulevard on them?
And yet other Cruiser owners will form a generic Motorcycle Cruiser Group for any brand of cruiser and offer patches, badges, caps and shirts to their members?
This might then take off and what next... gangs might get hold of the idea and start wearing patches and OMG... where will it ever end? :bash:
I say good on em for being part of a group they are proud to be members of.

But seriously are Harley's about two things; riding an awesome cruiser, and the image;
Just recently while on a blat around the South Island I met a guy on his Harley, nice guy but; he had a 'Harley gang patch' on his jacket, the bandana thing going on, tassels on his jacket and handle bars, studded side saddles and belt, huge as harley belt buckle - the image is as much of it as the riding for most Harley owners isn't it.

I'd put those trying to live the American dream into another category entirely. And I doubt most HOG members display this extreme/fantasy behaviour.

Like someone else said...HOG have been around for ages, actually since 1983... and the back patches (rockers) as well as the side patches have been around just as long...
The back patches are very popular in the states but due to conflict with some of the existing "clubs" throughout Australasia the rockers were taken off the market for us troublesome kiwis and aussies.
Then about 5-ish years ago they became available again. You won't see one on the back of EVERY HOG members jacket but if they wanna wear it proudly then good for them. Personally I think its asking for trouble from the 1%rs but thats another whole thread LOL.
I'm proud of what I choose to ride but my personal preference is for no badges OR patches aside from the one R.I.P. in memory of my dear departed.

Not everyone want to be seen with a patch/rocker on their back. Only the ones who are proud to belong. Be that a 1% or a social group like HOG.
Personally I have no desire to join HOG, Ulysses or any other social group where the social aspect is the main focus and the bikes take 2'nd place (even if the bikes are close to the first one).
In my view the patch belongs to the ones who have earnt the right to wear it, not the ones who have the money to buy it. Where I come from, when you had the full patch you had proven your worth and been accepted. It could take years.
I therefore consider the "Wild Hog" rockers to be worthless. But that is clearly only my view and if someone wants to wear them it won't change my sleeping habits.
I would also never wear a T shirt with a bike brand that I did not own. But in NZ that is very common. There are punks walking around with HD, Triumph, Norton and others on T's that would not know them from a Ferguson tractor.

Gangs or clubs?
Black Label Society's a band (spin-off for Ozzy's guitarist, Zakk Wylde) Hells Angels use the term 'club' but I think that's for legal reasons. Read in the weekend's paper that they're looking to get a foothold in Nelson but I'm sure HOG will drive them out (I saw it in a movie once).

I guess it's the same as when you see someone with a real sports bike - R1 or GSXR1000 type of bike - tricked out with carbon fiber, competition pipes and race breed stickers all over it, they're wearing a one piece leather suit with the cone thing on the back - absolutely looking the part
'Geee' You think, 'he looks like he can ride'
Then they fall of at the first sign of a real corner, or lock up the front brake and head accross the road instead of around the corner - and you soon realise they can't ride to save themselves.
Or those people who buy a full on off road 4x4 - and the biggest bump they ever go over is the occasional curb

I think that there is a world of difference between a 'HOG' patch / rocker and one that has to be 'earnt'.
I cannot see how people get 'huffed up' like the OP about the HOG patches - so what - they are a club - its not that much different to having printed t-shirts for the kids soccer team.
Its the scum with the 'real' patches - the ones that are earnt by robbery, assaulting people, dealing drugs, going to jail, gang rape - they are the people that should be getting our scorn - not the normal every day father who likes to ride with a group of like minded guys and likes Harleys.

In your world that might be so and I respect your look at things. Sadly the same is happening in the MC world as anywhere else, that the minority who are doing the shit are the ones who get the headlight.
But look at it this way: Where you have to earn the right to be part of that club the rest of the members will know you and be able to trust you. And that includes your riding abilities. I am always very reluctant to ride in a big group with riders I have no idea of who they are or how they ride. I will therefore always ride last when with some riders I don't know.
In a HOG scenario there is often a big group of riders and many of them have resently bought a new shiny toy. The only requirement to be part of that group is to own the HD and have the HOG emblem on you. Suddenly you are part of the brotherhood and ride at 120k/h+ on 400Kg of steel. And the only thing you had to do is to buy your self in.

The worst things about clubs, from the local pigeon fanciers to the bowling club, to a bike club, are the self-important arseholes who have no sense of the whole fish / pond perspective thing. So you’re ‘on the committee’? You’re a ‘life member’? You’re the ‘road captain’? Who gives a fuck y'dick...

I couldn't agree more
Seems to be a small minded short persons way of feeling important
I love it when you go to the 'club meeting' and there's a chairman, secretary and scribe who takes minutes - and the chairman has a little hammer in his hand to keep things on track - it was the local tennis club in a small town I lived in for a while - ITS ONLY BLOODY TENNIS

All the people with "hog" patches earned their money to buy their bikes.....
They all work and pay tax.

True and I also agree with another comment made about riding in a group of people who have bought the bike but don't yet have the skills... Personally I try to avoid riding with 'unknowns'.

Oh and I love the weekly runs..... a whole heap of Harleys thundering through the countryside....
And no they are not hanging around either...
And I love the wednesday evening rides, thursday nanarides, any sort of ride realy....
QUOTE]
I have been a HOG member for a long time but stopped going on the club rides long before I got the Buell cos I got frustrated with being hemmed in by people who just wouldn't pass cars even when it was completely safe to do so. Oh and sitting on 110kph ALL day just kills me on the Buell ( I persevered but had to admit defeat cos its just so uncomfortable for me ).
But get a few of them on their own away from the official club rides and those HDs get a thrashing LOL.
Funny thing is that I have a couple of mates who both ride HDs with BIG ape-hangers and whenever we go for a ride they say to me "take off if ya want, we will see ya there". But I just smile and say "its no biggie, I choose to ride with you guys so I am gonna ride WITH you". Actually I secretly love riding behind these 2 blokes and perving at them LOL.
[QUOTE=awayatc;2016732]
I will go on Any ride, anywhere anytime, except with lowlives that have to "earn" their patch.....I am honest, and proud of it.
QUOTE]
I won't ride with lowlives either but not ALL MC members are lowlives. Some of them would fall more into the 'likeable rogue' category. I know people who belong to patched clubs. We have a beer and a laugh occasionally and sometimes I'll do their poker runs...biker politics is never discussed. They are just people who ride as far as I am concerned.

When I was a teenager I kicked around on my Triumph with some mates who were in the H66
Now days I don't choose to associate with people if I know they are steeling, dealing drugs, gang banging, or live off the proceeds of such activities.
But I also don't want to go around making valued judgments about people I know nothing about - purely on the basis of appearances.
There is the argument that if one wants to parade around in a gang patch, and benefit from the intimidation value it brings, then they should take the discrimination that it also attracts.
Mind you I know plenty of respectable looking people who are up to their eyeballs in illegal activities, or living off the proceeds from it.
Should I make valued judgements about them as well?
I don't think life is that black and white, and life is too short to live like that

Went to fill up petrol just before midningt last night at a local BP. As I was standing there waiting to pay a young part maori chap, max 20, came in. He was what I would call handsome, fit and had nice teeth. (Stop it, I am just observant!!!) Was dressed in black and red. He gave a pretty girl about same age $50 so she could pay for their petrol. Her language was plesant, she was well dressed and I got the impression that she was from a decent family and she had some sort of education.
Nothing strange there. Apart from that on one side of the young chaps face he had the MM tattoo. It covered whole that side of the face.
Two things went through my head:
1. What is a girl like her doing with someone that clearly has decided to devote his life to MM and all that it involves (including their attitude towards females)?
2. Was there nobody that could have informed this chap what he was doing to his life by branding him self as he did? Where was all the "leaders" who are trying to change the way for their people?
As they jumped in to their late model jap car and I started up my 87 Audi that I had just spent $20 on petrol on (after a serious consideration as I would not get any money inside a week) I felt sad for them. I could see how hard their life would be...

Gang members? there's a cure.
It's simple, it just takes the moral fortitude to hold on long enough to educate all of the kids going to school right now.
Make sure they can all actually read and write.
Make sure their parents are responsible for their whereabouts day and night.
Make sure they have a job to go to before allowing them to leave school or a place of practical work based experience.
You know what, they'd figure it out for themselves. Work, earn money, have a life , be upstanding in their community and be respected for being honest and forthright.
We'd still have the odd few exceptions, it's called white Island! drop em out there by helicopter and leave em there to fend for themselves where they can't come back and hurt innocent people again and again.
Got quite along way from Wild Hogs as a subject, sorry bout that.
Loved the movie, though a bit too over acted, pity had a fantastic cast and not a bad story line.
It was just a story aye?

Mate. I've been teaching for years. Do you think we DON'T try to educate these kids? Do you think we don't try to instil decent values into them? I let nothing go by and take every opportunity to address respect for others' property, respect for the immediate and wider environment, respect for each other and for staff. But some (and I can only think of a handfull in recent years) struggle to see the big picture. For them gang culture can be very attractive and glamorous. I'm just glad that I teach at a good school. If I'm honest, I don't think I could deal with that crap day in - day out.

Thanks for the honesty, that is unfortunately what actually happens to most teachers, good or bad,
My mum taught for many years and like you and many(but not enough) others she fought it all the way.
My apologies fro making it sound so easy, I know it's not, but if it were possible to hold onto them and make their damned parents responsible and take the rap for them , then it would actually work.
I did make allowance for the few, that's my own idea.Harsh perhaps, but it's time we looked after the rest of us not the criminals.
Many thanks for teaching the kids and for trying so hard, I'm sure you have great days and bad days like the rest of us out there working, but if like my mum you do it right for just one they come back and say hi and they show you what you did for them. I hope that goes along way to helping you keep going.

Cheers for that. Like most jobs there are good days and bad. I was a teacher's worst nightmare when I was a kid so whenever they're playing up I just think it's payback (can even laugh when I recognise myself in them).
In comparison to teaching in the UK (and it's a broad comparison) I find Kiwi kids more willing to work through a problem and they don't require as much spoon-feeding. School's just a much more positive environment here. I'd give up teaching if I had to go back to the UK.
Anyway, back to the subject at hand: Harleys are great but some of the owners are dicks. I think that's where we're up to? ;-)

I sympathise...some teachers must feel like they're wasting their time...they put so much effort into trying instil some morals and principles into kids that go home to a 'family' unit where none of those things exist...

Well, they sure do in mine. Christ, damned if you do and damned if you don't...
Yes, you do often feel like you're wasting your time when day after day kids come to school with no apparent respect for another's property, each other, or their surroundings. I'm sure their kids will be much the same. They'll be shit, inconsiderate road users, will litter their surroundings because it's somebody else's job to clean it up, will cheat the benefit system because it's all about looking after number one, and will generally make f'k all contribution to NZ.
Hope National have a plan for this because that last lot sure didn't.
