View Full Version : Bye bye forever - Rimutaka summit cafe

Griffin
6th April 2009, 09:19
Big bye bye to the Rimutaka summit cafe... the saga of whether it will ever re-open has been decided by fire.

Now I wonder how a fire started in an unused cafe during the middle of a saga over who was going to pay for its demolition...?

Hmmmmmm :Pokey:

Duke girl
6th April 2009, 09:28
Sounds very suspicious as burning it down solves the problem with who was going to demolish it now doesn't it?
Such a shame it closed down in the 1st place as alot of motorcyclists who ride over the Rimas always use to use the summit as a meeting place and a place to rest for a short period before either heading towards Featherston or Upper Hutt.

The Summit Cafe was, at best, a two-day-a-week business.

There is no power or other services at the summit. Imagining that somebody could run a viable business up there has been long disproved as flightful fantasy.

Bikers may now have to ride, heaven forbid, down the hill to Featherston for a coke and a wee.

Same here. I never really got how it was supposed to be a functioning business anyway. It can only open for two days of seven; the traditional clientele, bikers, are tight arses at the best of times; and everything that's about to be said about power, water, sewage etc. etc. etc. is basically true.

Besides, you ride up to the summit of the takas and the first thing on your mind is going back down the other side again 'cos it's great.

Sounds like an opportunity to me... Anyone got a caravan cafe? Only need to tow it up there Friday night and back Sunday night... covers the two days nicely without the need for on site premises... Look to the positive I say!

And you can leave the 'staff' (missus) to run the place while you go ride...

Sad end but not surprising. I was up there yesterday afternoon and noticed the place had been seriously vandalised and trashed so was not surprised to hear that it had ended this way. I think someone said they were going to use that area as a construction base for the Muldoons corner work - I hope they leave enough room for us to park and shoot the breeze, although once they start the road works up there I would be inclined to avoid that road anyway.

The caravan will come, the toilets will go. Not such a bad result really.

According to an article in the local paper food at the summit started in World War 1 when the good ladies of Featherston made sandwiches and a cup of tea for troops marching from the Featherston camp (on the first straight towards Greytown) to Trentham.

The loos may be in a seperate building .. but they don't seem to work without a generator ... which is why outside has become a urinal and is quite disgusting ... might be wrong .. about the generator but I thought they were powered ... also the pipes underground aren't meant to be fair cop.

You're not wrong. It's the pumps that require electrickery.

Not only is there no mains power or gas, but no town sewerage system either. All that bad coffee & dodgy food over the years has been directly funding the poos & wees of the many, in more than just the usual fashion.

The loos are going too. Their upkeep was supposed to be a condition of the cafe's lease arrangements with the Regional Council, which never happened. Electricity was provided by a generator at the cafe, as there are no utility services at the summit.

Nice bloke, tough as nails, about to meet his toughest challenge. He will need to sink vastly more money into the project than he will see back in his lifetime.

It's 13kms of twisties between Kaitoke Gardens on the Hutt side, and Featherston on the other side. The scenic carpark has a place, but the filthy loos and dodgy hardly ever open cafe isn't a necessity, is it? On a bad traffic day it takes 30 minutes to traverse that distance, less than half that for the most Nana rider on a quiet day. If your bladder is that stuffed that you can't make that distance, and your thinking is so solidified that change makes you angry to the point of irrational behaviour then maybe bikes aren't the best place for your arse (generally speaking of course - not you Pete - you're one of those "flexible" motorcyclists).

Sounds like an opportunity to me... Anyone got a caravan cafe? Only need to tow it up there Friday night and back Sunday night... covers the two days nicely without the need for on site premises... Look to the positive I say!

And you can leave the 'staff' (missus) to run the place while you go ride...

Now there's a good idea if ever I heard one. Leaving the missus to run the café while you go riding I mean.LOL Ouch i can feel that hand on the back of my head already.
Pity about the fire, I've stopped there a few times while crossing over from Featherston(town full of rellies for me) to the Hut.

He's a fukwit and a man with anger management issues it's a simple as that.
It's there in black and white almost everywhere he goes lately he's getting
in trouble with people, asserting his fat ass all over the place.

The point is simple, if he behaves like this then at some stage he will meet
someone that he should not have fuked with.

When that day comes, i will be there to remind him.

And if your his mate, you must be a much a fukwit as him with icing on the top.:bleh:

Your a hippocrite and spineless if all you can do is warn people of this chaps
staunchness and in the same sentence say he's placid.

Bollox mate, his time will come.

Only morons would hang out with Gary McPhee.
That's all i'm going to say further on the matter.
He's not worth the bandwidth!!!

I have met him.
He's a fukwit, end of story.
Drives a shitbox car as well.
Never seen him up the hill on a bike.

Yeah right!

Now all we have to do is to retrain the incontinent travellers of this world who like to shit in the Great Outdoors...

What the summit could have is a little coffee cart thing at the top?

Gary McPhee is the best Mayor that Carterton has EVER had!! where do YOU come from or what rock did you crawl under!! he is just what the town has needed and crime has gone down, we know 'cause we live here!!
As for the Top Of The Hill, if Greater Wellington would keep their nose out of Wairarapa business the world would be a better place!
he is passionate about the things he stands for and puts his money and time and effort into things, what about you? go crawl back under your rock!!

Well *name removed* (Aka "Mr ACC bludger") You should stick to making T-shirts and ripping off the system so you can buy fuel for your Commodore and large motorcycle! Your unsolicited attacks on Gary McPhee shows clearly who has the "real anger management" issues ...Look no further than your mirror.

Your attacks on his credibility, show that you really personally dont know the man... but have relied on secondhand gossip from pathetic little people who most probably make a living under the table and rip the ACC system like you do with your T-shirt business. Perhaps you could rip off Scotland instead of New Zealand!!!!! As you leave please fly Air New Zealand...we need the funds.
As you put it, only "Morons hang out with Gary McPhee"....Well sir, I'm one proud Moron! having had the pleasure in knowing the man these past 20years.Ive travelled America with him,and have benefited from his generosity and good nature on many occasions. From his early invovlement in BRONZ and his continual involvement in Motorcycling in general and racing in the past, Gary is well known and regarded throughout NZ.
*name removed* , know your target and identify it before you go head hunting....you may find there is more support out there for Gary McPhee from many different quarters than you realise.........But of course you would say they are Morons wouldn't you.........Get a real job Kenny and spend less time on the internet attacking people you personally don't know:

The next time you know of a similar ride, give me a nod and lets see if we can get other Wairarapa riders to join. I have been over the hill for Wgtn/Hutt KB rides, also over to the Manawatu. There will probably be a ride to the Tin Hut from Wgtn so we could join with that. I am going on a Manawatu ride on the 10th, and on Sunday 31 May I am organizing a ride through the back roads of Wairarapa for the Feilding Riders Club, having lunch in Martinborough - if it is OK with them I will try to get Wairarapa KB'ers to join.

There is a KBer on Colombo Road, Lissa / Mel here in Masterton, two other KBers in Carterton, and most likely a few more. Maybe we should post a Wairarapa trip on Meetings and Events to see who shows up...

I did that a while back and got like zero replies.
Maybe now with more riders out there we can get something underway.

...I`ve kinda got an addiction with the Rimutaka hill going on at the moment, with mandatory runs up and down the thing every Saterday and/or Sunday...but I`m willing to detour.
