Not sure about Kiwitrackdays but they dont have them out for the Test days and it kinda makes you wary on a couple of the corners but hey how much trouble can you get into at 35kph.

Back in Jan when I tried to get insurance for Redline at Puke I got a call from Dave at Kiwibike saying they wouldn't cover the day because the crash bags weren't being put out.

He's just approved this Saturday so I guess that means one of two things
- There will be crash bags
- The insurance cares less about me than they did a couple of months ago.

From what I saw at Taupo Kiwitrackdays is pretty safety conscious. They were urging caution on cold tyres and had coned off some of the repairs as they deemed them too slippery.

Go here http://www.kiwitrackdays.co.nz/ and ask them

Even a track like Puke is safer than riding on the road.

I'm a bit worried about the weather does anyone know if you can sign up on the day.

Wot sky-hi says but.... You are going to learn just as much if its a wet track as you would on a dry one. Long range forcast is ok.

Crash bags limit the impact into the wall the problem with crashing is normally the stop that hurts/kills people.

Not to sure I'm keen to go out on the track with out all the saftey precautions out, bit like riding with out all the saftey gear on!!!!!!!!!

I thought that at first too, but on the track....

Everyone is going the same way

There isn't anyone using their cellphone, reading a map, eating their
breakfast etc while driving

No-one is parked across the road trying to back their boat into their driveway

The surface (even Puke's bumpy one) is better than a normal road

There's an ambulance no more than 3 minutes away

Ultimately you have to decide what level of risk you are comfy with. Personally I'm certain that riding too and from the track on public roads at normal speed is far more dangerous than riding around the track at full speed.

[QUOTE=MaxCannon;2018232]I thought that at first too, but on the track....

Not at the same speed though which is the main danger of other riders

There isn't anyone using their cellphone, reading a map, eating their
breakfast etc while driving
100% agreed

No-one is parked across the road trying to back their boat into their driveway
People slowing down entering pits or bikes slowing due to breakage (causing fluids on the track) crossing apexs while the session is taking place or rider waiting up in stupid position.

Another problem area at Puke is people leaving the Pits

The surface (even Puke's bumpy one) is better than a normal road
Not over the top of the hill and by the kink coming out of the hairpin where there is a 90 degree wall (which is the most dangerous area in all of motorsport in NZ)

There's an ambulance no more than 3 minutes away
If your dead do you care

Ultimately you have to decide what level of risk you are comfy with. Personally I'm certain that riding too and from the track on public roads at normal speed is far more dangerous than riding around the track at full speed.

It depends how and where you ride the speed adds a risk for sure no one can deny that but I understand that it still is normally your own F*** ups at the track that cause carnage where on the road it can be a load of other things that add up to a high risk.

Myself I wear all the gear to protect myself, I would like the track to be as safe as possible so if the Fuck up happens I'm protected.

I mean what does it cost to put up the bags I'm guessing between $500 to $1500 which is not a lot if it saves one persons life, what price does everyone else put on saftey of all of us on the track.

Answers after your qustions/statements

I think only AMCC puts the bails out. AMCC Trackdays are a little different me thinks, as we have marshals just like race meetings (just a smaller number required) and to us (marshals) its business as usual, just at a slower pace.

Normal trackdays are more just, track is open, rock up and go...

There's quite a bit of work involved. Local farmer is contracted to drop them around the circuit, then the AMCC marshals tie them all up, at least an hours work to tie and un-tie them, depending how many marshals are doing them at once.

Yes yes, its a track, but over the hill for instance, how many have died on the same corner? Probably not quite like the road. Very little run off... and not much soft stuff to hit if the bails aren't there.

quackquack
8th April 2009, 14:01
What do you mean they don't have Marshalls either, that settle it for me the AMCC day was Awesome and it got me ready to do more days but I would expect the same level of safety when the $$$$$ to do the day are about the same.

Gremlin
8th April 2009, 16:10
not sure how many, if any, marshalls there are. I know its not AMCC marshals (coz I am one)

Would doubt there is a professional marshalling crew, due to the cost... but the best option is to ask them.

MaxCannon
8th April 2009, 16:41
There are definitely flag marshalls around the track.

I don't have the definite answer on crash bags.

No doubt Pukekohe is a risky track to ride on. Although is you get turn 14 wrong at Taupo there is a concrete wall along pit straight to crash into.

IMHO I feel safer doing 200 at a trackday than doing 60 in rush hour on the southern motorway

GIXser
8th April 2009, 20:53
i agree they need to put crash bails out, they are right there stored at puke, it would be easy to put a dozen or so out there, i will email steve now!!

Gremlin
8th April 2009, 23:43
I reckon you would need more than a dozen. Over the hill would be the priority.

Generally, we have a line running the length of the ford signs, and then stack twins at an angle a foot off the side of the track. The idea is that you hit the twins, slows you down, then you hit the bails right before the wall...

In the dip, we run three lines of bales. Know you have raced there, but not sure how much you have seen of the prep at the blur you pass by :)

I'm sorry the dip is that the left hander out of the hairpin.

Gremlin
9th April 2009, 11:47
The dip is about there. The point for the dip is on the inside of the track just as you head into the final right hander (over the hill).

For bail purposes, yes, the left hander after the hairpin, all the bales in front of pit entry

Yet people still try a ride on the road( coro loop etc) like it's a race track!....So can't see puke being a problem unless yr willing to push the envelope...

Got a reply from Steve regarding the crash bags

he said

"Yes - we put them out over the hill"

I know a few people will disagree with me but in my opinion the hill onto the front straight is the only part of Pukekohe that is significantly more dangerous than any other racetrack.

I did my first trackday at Puke and scared myself shitless in the second session because I was trying way too hard.

Pulled my head in and focused on having fun, improving my riding, learning from the more experienced riders and keeping the shiny side upright.

Well the weather spoilt the party early on but was still a great day.

First slow group session was very wet and there was a crash on the exit of Castrol corner.
The bike came out better than the rider who came back in the ambulance.
Hopefully they are OK.
I helped load the bike onto the owners trailer - looks like the crash bung saved the fairings.

After two sessions in the slow group (which was really slow even when the track dried) I moved into the medium group.
Felt a bit safer as lines were tidier and speed through the corners higher.
Second to last session of the day mixed Fast and Medium groups and this is where I picked up some great tips following the quick guys.

Got about 6 sessions in all up which was pretty good going given the number of bins that had to be attended to.
Saw a Kwaka come in on the recovery truck that looked in pretty bad shape.

I learnt that the bike can go faster around the corners. In the last session following an R6 onto the front straight I picked up 20kph in corner speed just buy following his line and mimicking his body position.

Was great to meet some new people - big thanks to Andy and Tanya who let me stash my bag in their car.
Also thanks to everyone else I chatted with but didn't get any names - see out there again soon.

OMG..... been off bikes for over a year, mainly due to overseas excursions and have been hankering for a decent blat...

Picked up the green machine last weekend and thankfully got to have a bit of a play this weekend. Only a couple of little niggles with the bike like it not being able to top out in 5th or 6th so was getting chomped on the straights with a limit of about 235 but I can't believe how well this thing stops.

Still buzzing and it feels awesome to be on a bike again. Anybody get any pics? Looking for one of a plonker on a rag tag bike hahahaha

I'll be lurking around a track near you....

From my understanding and experience anyone can head to the track to take pics. You may need to sign a liability waiver like the riders do for being on the track.
The marshalls are good to deal with and will advise you where you can and where you can't go around the track. If there are professional photogrophers around, there may be other restrictions, just ask the organisers of the day.

I'm sorely temped to take the day off work (no not to stare at the chicks - to grind more of the bandit footpegs away) but I've been spending like crazy lately.
