It's all in the panning...... There were many failed shots...... I like the pics to have 'movement' the slower shutter speed lets the wheels blur. Having said that, I didn't have anything to do with the shot, I gave her the camera with the settings all over the place, so she had to experiment.

vr4king
6th April 2009, 20:24
Yeah I prefer to "stop" the object ie no blurred wheels would a higher iso speed do that

Ive been experimenting with faster shutter speeds so far

theres nothing wrong with dirty minds imo, but if you're going to post dirty comments in relation to people, know the people you're trying to joke about... otherwise it gets like this instance...and the last time..... and its just wrong.

Nice pic, will look good framed.
my 2 cents worth re roadies... there are heaps of forum members who ride off and on road me included,it;s a great big world out there with vastly different interests and likes/dislikes. each to his own etc, let's not get into a off versus on road war, there are big dickheads and posers in both camps! the simple truth is they are all riding bikes!we all know the feeling of opening up that throttle or cranking over into a corner. so be nice, have fun. phew! that's my longest post ever!

My read is you pick a spot on the rider with high contrast, mid chest is good with shirt designs, track for 1/2 a second then fire the shutter, keeping tracking of course, if you want to practise try something like a 3 second exposure & try & get that right, oh elbows up & shoot out breath out ( just like target shooting really ).

P.S. Sweet pic clmintie, soph did you proud.

just some tips for the 450d, for sport riding photos

the shutter priority (TV) mode is probably your best bet with action shots

use the iso on 100-200 if your outside an its sunny or just leave on auto

bring the shutter down to 100 if you want to capture sense of speed, along with panning (following moving object) you will create fixed image of the bike but blurred background

if you want object and background completely fixed (can see the spokes) up the shutter speed to 500+

use the focusing mode (AI SERVO) which allows you to follow the bike while its moving with finger half pressed.. this keeps it in focus as it comes towards you etc.. then fully shutter when desired.. keep panning (following the bike) and try to keep same speed as the object.

keep practising.. you will get blurry ones out of focus at times

No one's more 'one of us' that you oldguy....

Thanks for the PM s.....

This really isn't about road/off road, it's about the visitors to off road not realising that because trail riders don't need a drivers licence, there are many kids here (not mine though.... ) which makes this section more family orientated. I do visit the 'adult' sections of KB and enjoy the banter, but try to only post what I would say in person.... (and I have to be careful what I say, cause after years of on and off road racing, I can't run fast..... :done: )

and... I'm sooo looking forward to the day I can't keep up with my daughters, both on bikes and with camera. At this rate it won't be long... :2thumbsup

Hmmmmm.... Hadn't thought that far ahead... I'd be pretty keen to try electric, I've had quite a lot to do with high powered miniature brushless motors/controllers.... Imagine instant HP and torque from stand still and no-one knowing your tearing up their back yard.....

450 you say.....ummm....

Wonders off muttering to self.........

Hrmmm, would this be the same vr4king that married spannar? LOL
If so, heeelllloooooooooo and hello to your lovely wifey.
If not....move along, nothing to see here.
:scooter:

I do a lot of action shots and am looking forward to trying out my hand at MX pics.
I have done thousands of Freestyle BMX shots (Vert, Street and Dirt), a handful of Freestyle MX shots (Planet X & X-Air) Skateboarding Pics and Car racing pics.
Will be a nice addition to the repertoire if I can lock down some good MX pics.

I tend to go for high ISO and high shutter speeds especially in daylight as I find that I like the details that I get.
Cant use a high ISO in low light or you end up with images that are grainy and yuck. Hard to clean up even in Lightroom/Photoshop. The so called 'noise reduction' software doesnt help much either.
Bright sunlight and a good circular polariser make for some clear and colourful images that often convert to B&W well.
I have a camera with a manual zoom (LOVE it) and AF and I stick to Program Mode mostly. Sometimes Manual if things arent working out for me in P.
I try to get my best shots in daylight as I go for clarity and try to make it obvious what the subject is doing..... Sometimes (when I am in the mood) I get all arty, but then I get yelled at for it when the boys see the shots - seems they prefer to know whats going on LOL

I've made notes on this though as that first photo is really cool!
Props to her for getting such a good shot!

Ok, so we went to Harrisville today and while I was hooning around in the "B" group with Grace, Sophie was putting her new skills with the camera to good use. This pic is totally her own work, she had to change virtually every setting in the camera to get it and apart from a tiny bit of brightening, it's as shot... I am such a proud dad... She also zoomed around the mini track in the "A"s and is loving it.... I'm on a major high.. (Drug free, but for a little Merlot.....)

We're not staying home, we're going to the Maize paddock scramble. I'm on call for work 24/7 for the next two weeks and have to stay in cell phone range. I've organised a fellow worker to cover for me if there's a call out, but I have to vet the calls.

We went to Ardmore on Sunday for the "Trackmax" series, it was sooo cool, three rounds of racing, that finished at 2, then the track, which was in brilliant condition was left open until everyone had had enough.. (about 4). Very cool day......at the end of the day, when only a handful were still riding, Grace put in about twenty laps on the 125, I had to prise it off her...... Still a bit big for her, but I guess I won't have it for much longer......pic below taken by Sophie.....
